Look at all the dirt in your intake manifold and you know EGR is totally stupid. Had it cleaned, EGR blanked, ECU remaped on a 2016 3.2l Ford. Works like a charm, no raise in engine temperature, no fault code, awesome torque and power.

Well, i did some experiments on my truck, a Renault Midlum 220 DCi, that comes with an EGR valve, but from factory, the engine breather, is venting from a pipe to outside the engine, not to the intake manifold.
First test: i did a visual inspection on the intake manifold, and i was very surprised to see that it was not as dirty as i was expecting, for a truck with 865k kilometers. Even the MAP sensor was not clogged up, so i decided not to clean the thing and i just put the MAP sensor back on.
Second test: i did a full EGR blank, and this was a wrong move, on idle, the engine sound good, no shaking and no abnormal sounds. but on acceleration it was a nightmare, no power at all, it sounded terrible, like backfiring. does not show any kind of errors on the display. so i remove the blank.
Third test: Installed an EGR blank, with an initial hole of 9mm, and same result as before, no power/very rough. increased the size to 12mm, got engine working as intended, good power and no more bad sounds.
Fourth test: since the EGR on this truck is controlled with an air pressure line, i plug the line to see the result, and here i just don't know how does the EGR operate on the truck. With no air control on the EGR, the truck does not seem affected, it has the normal engine power, sounds great and does not show any kind of errors on the display
This was only a test i decided to make, to see the state of the intake manifold, and to see how modifications to the EGR looked like, i did not perform any kind of ECU remap during the tests. the truck is running with the stock configurations (no EGR blank's, intake manifold cleaning or ECU remap's)

The video would have had greater credibility if you had actually tried the EGR blocking plate and been able to comment on pros and cons based on your actual experience.
For me, my actual experience was with a 2013 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI, and it was entirely positive. A slight but noticeable improvement in fuel economy, and throttle response, and no noticeable ill effects whatsoever. Long term there will be greatly reduced sludge build up in the intake manifold also.

The discussion is basically only about mapping really - all turbo diesel engines worked fine without EGR type systems - the real question is why have an air filter if you are going to chuck handful's of grinding paste ( exhaust soot and oil ) into the engine after the air filter - at the end of the day an engine with clean air going inlet manifold will inherently last longer QED

  • @thezerocool22
    @thezerocool22 Рік тому +7

a good discussion around the issue, I would say the older EGRs were more 100% open or close design and based on activation when warm and on over-run, blanking these off was a good option. Newer cars that have the fuel balancing algorithms based on a set percentage of EGR flow are a different story, having them mapped out professionally would be a good idea so the tuning is based on the EGR running closed.
Plugging in diagnostics will let you watch how your EGR runs and get a feel for if the EGR is actuating through normal running.

In their minds, the argument of whether or not the egr is good for the car doesn’t come into it; the only argument in there mind is: “Is this legal?” And, because most people believe the law and morality are the same, they also believe that egr deletion is not only a legal violation but a moral one too. Difference is 200000+miles blanked and still has high compression vs 200000- using egr gas recirculation and no compression with worn out rings guides etc. Engines were never designed to reburn their exhaust gas. Only governments with rules for them and one for us do that without bothering about premature failure of a carbon clogged engine adding to the pollution eventually enyway. Better to keep it running as clean as possible with regular oil changes and no carbon recirculation.

We just drill a couple holes in the modern diesels DPF filter and we Remap the EGR and its duty cycle out and the EGT’s are lower than before and the Lambdas all read perfect AFR’s afterwards.
The problem with the EGR valve is soot yes, but thats not what the real issue is. They claim to bring down EGT’s thus allowing a cleaner burn and lower Nox levels however…..this is only true whilst the EGR is functioning correctly, and closing fully!
With soot build up being pretty quick on diesels, they stop closing all the way, the motor loses its calibration point,
Then you have a boost leak, now the engines running rich and EGT’s start to creep up pretty quick from the excess fuel, dpf filter starts to prematurely block up causing excessive regenerations and thus advancing the timing pouring fuel in the exhaust system to get the EGT’s to a ridiculous 500/700 degrees before it will start the DPF regen process.
Only then does it start chucking out plooms of nox rich soot dense emissions from the exhaust for everyone to gulp down a bigger dose at a time.
Your engine oil begins to dillute rapidly from all the automatic regens thinning out the oil at the same time with bore wash whilst regenerating the dpf and causing premature engine wear.
EGR valves are a terrible design in my opinion they cause the engine to run poor and not efficient in the longer term, they were actually designed to improve fuel economy bu lower combustion chamber heat which allows the engine to compress the fuel longer creating more bang per buck per say.
But again this is only while the egr is new, shortly after all that goes out the window.
And your now left with an extra soot filled inlet manifold that now has the lung capacity of a chain smoker.
Running richer by the day! 😂
Cap it, map it and get rid. Run some T stroke in your fuel for a while afrer and it will get that manifold like new again!!

@@brett639 If its not already leaking. Depends what year all EGR’s are different some cant have blanking plates so a clean and map shut via removing its duty cycle is normally enough to cure.
But remember if you have a dpf fitted mapping out the egr will cause the dpf to fail its regenerations in most cases, a few models will complete regens with egr deleted however due to the difference in pressure with the egr locked shut your and more soot direct to the DPF, it will start to regenerate more often.
So we always remove the egr and dpf together.
Dpf filter must be removed from the exhaust if you remove dpf software.

What I love is when people hold a blanking plate like yours and talk that it's bad. If toyota had their way, that would be the size of the egr pipe to begin with. That's all it needs to reduce temps and nox lol. Government morons demanded they be the huge size they are. Which is what is causing all the issues.
Putting in a 6 to 8mm hole plate, with a catch can is the best thing you can do.

Pre common rail engines with vac operated EGR units just blank them off completely. Isuzu and Mitsi's are the ones that suffer the most from a dying or dead EGR. Have removed complete EGR systems from many many vehicles over the last 30years and never had an issue. Admittedly on non-common rail engines as I wont touch them.
If the EGR valve has an electrical plug on the top fit a plate with a 6-8mm hole in it.
Dont use alloy plates, 316 stainless is the only way to go.
As for catch cans: the can needs to be 1/2 the literage of your engine. TD 42 needs a 2 litre catch can. And 1/4 - 1/2 fill the can with lathe turnings or stainless pot scrubbers. The oil tube goes down to the stainless wool but as the fumes try to rise it gets caught amongst the stainless wool/lathe turnings. Fitted one to my TD42 in a SWB Safari. Bought with 96,000kms sold with over 800,000kms. Never had the head off, never had anything more than the tiniest amount of oil or crap in the inlet manifold. I ran Castrol Turbomax oil in it. Pulled injectors once a year and threw a new set of nozzles in them as they are so ridiculously cheap. Had a turbo one after and did same thing but removed the EGR system. Never had one single issue with that engine after EGR delete and catch can fitted except the front seal of the injector pump which can be done in place.

The cracked pistons from blanking the EGR is a result of the tune not the blank plate. Hilux 1KD FTV are prone to cracked pistons from tunes. It's not from the plate.
You are correct about a plate throwing a code on particular diesels. I put a 7mm plate on my 07 1kdftv Hilux after doing a full EGR and manifold clean and it throws the P0400 EGR code. So I'm now removing it as I refuse to risk cracked pistons from deleting and tuning or remap. What really annoys me is when Tuning shops recommend EGR deletes on these vehicles and deny that there would be issues when there's evidence to prove otherwise.
I disagree with your comment about never having to clean your Exhaust system. This is incorrect. I cleaned mine at 160,000km in 2022 and it was caked with carbon. You WILL need to clean it during it's life, there is no if, buts or maybes about it, otherwise you'll just end up on the side of the road. Period.

If you want to remove the Egr safest way to do it is a remap. Blanking plates and unplugging the egr are just blanket fixes until it’s remapped. Some vehicles unplugging the egr will put it into limp mode. So the most efficient and safest way to prevent engine damage is a remap. Hope this helps.

Mine a 1997 model Pajero/Shogun Mitsubishi EGR may engine knock at 3k rpm that is why I delete it but not totally but this model have a solenoid valve I that vacuums the EGR actuator I just add switch to the solenoid valve if I want the EGR activated for a cooler combustion.

I think most diesels would benefit from an egr delete or remap. But we need independent lab tests to say for sure. Each engine is different and the argument won’t be settled by anecdotal evidence.

the exhaust gas that is returned is sent back via a heat exchanger that is integral with the EGR system in order to reduce its temperature and thus cylinder temps

Seems you’re mainly addressing Diesel Engines. What would be of interest in this conversation is the ‘claimed’ benefit of the EGR removal/blocking.
Wouldn’t a custom designed Camshaft , maybe different Spark-Plug heat range,be much more beneficial?
In my ,admittedly, limited experience tinkering with cars, seemingly simple, cheap and advertised “Miracles” they hardly ever deliver and many times have unintended consequences.

What about EGR delete with ECU remap ??

    • @Bananas1973
      @Bananas1973 Рік тому +1

In a comment below he said that a remap is the best way to go. But then at 9:22 he says not to do it. Dude is all over the place.

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Рік тому +1

I said both options because if you want to EGR delete then ECU map is the most effective way to go.
However it’s not recommended as it has it’s own set of complications involved some of which can do irreversible damage so do it at your own risk.

Old video i know but ill answer the temp issue. Trucks do not have throttle body what happens is your throttle body is closing promoting egr circulation if you block the egr and your throttle body is closing airflow decreases temps rise.... pretty simple.

Ive done probably about 15k i had my car apart a month or so ago when I changed the map filter and I pulled the top hat off and checked it then, Just a dry light coating of soot. However I didn’t film it.
From checking cars in the workshop however the best way to describe what the intake’s look like after 30k-60k after having the intake previously cleaned and a catch can fitted that entire time is pretty much identical to the inside of your exhaust system. A light coating of dry diesel soot. I have seen some of the cars that still must have had some residual oil in either the intercooler etc and you have patches where the soot started to build. Mostly however it’s just a light coating and doesn’t get much worse than that. Hope this helps.

What is the point in adding a blanking plate that has a hole in it
The whole point in blanking the erg value is to eliminate exhaust gas entering back into the intake
But with a big hole in the blank plate that is not going to happen

    • @paulas2610

There is evidence to show it does work as it allows enough exhaust gas’s into the engine whist keeping the soot down to a minimum. If you haven’t tried it, you can’t have a credible opinion.

The engine is designed to completely close the egr when adding more gas, it opens it only when you are cruising. Why would it be a problem for the engine not to get smoke at low revs, it certainly cools then, it heats up only when you press the gas and then it certainly closes the egr! There's not much logic in that...
