    Great video. I’m having some trouble with static noise coming through. And I’m not sure what’s acceptable, and also how to deal with it best in post. Using a Podcast dynamic mic. And having trouble with how how to have my input settings, making the noise worse. Some direction would be so grateful.

      Thank you for your comment! To reduce static noise in post-production, try adjusting your input settings and consider using noise reduction filters or plugins in Adobe Audition or other editing software.

    I got everything you said. and just found a used in excellent condition Dr -X40. It’s the XLR at the bottom that got me. I have the Dr-07 mk II its a stunning recorder. But this has more connections Thanks. It’s funny all the Tascam ive seen are all several years old but sound BBC Radio 4 quality

      That's awesome that you found a Tascam DR-40X in excellent condition with more connections - it's great to hear you're impressed with the quality, it definitely helps achieve that BBC Radio 4 sound!

    Very informative video - thank you! I noticed you plugged in both your dynamic and condenser mics using phantom power, but didn't you say that you shouldn't use phantom with a dynamic mic as it may fry it?

    • @MikeRussell

      That is a possibility yes. Modern mics do have some fail safe technology but that was very naughty of me.

    Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....

    Can I use my Tascam Dr40x and my mixer to record phone calls? How can I set this up? I have a phone with a headphone jack on it.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому +1

      You could connect your phone via TRS but the DR40x would not be able to feed audio back so you'd be using the phone's microphone.

    Hi Mike, very useful video! May I have a question: when you record with two microphones plugged left and right (like in your video), how do you set the recorder so the record then doesn't play one person from the left ear and the person from the right ear? Thank you.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому +1

      The advantage of this is you have two separate tracks that you can use in multi track to edit. If you're not editing you can just convert the file to mono.

    Starting UA-cam channel on botanicals, it’s historic uses for medicinal purposes, etc.. Is a recorder/Tascam necessary? I’m focusing on low budget. New Sony ZV-1 vlogging camera, Sony Bluetooth shooting grip, Mavic drone. Rode Wireless Go Mic’s. Luma Fusion for editing.. How would I benefit from the Tascam?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому

      So your plan would be to connect the mics direct to the camera? If not you'll need either an interface to connect to a computer or a portable recorded of some sort to capture the audio from the mics.

    Hi Mike, and thank you for this video! I have just bought a Tascam DR-40X because I wanted to record two voices from external mic (as you are doing here). But if I record from the shure SM58 dynamic mic, no matter if I use the tascam as recorder or interface, I get a really annoying background noise (which I don't get with the same mic and a focus rite interface)! From your tests It doesn't seem you get this noise. What I could be doing wrong? Thank you!

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  9 місяців тому

      Hi there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you're experiencing some background noise when using the Shure SM58 dynamic mic with the Tascam DR-40X. There could be a few things causing this issue, such as a ground loop or a problem with the mic's gain settings. Try using a different mic cable or adjusting the mic's gain levels to see if that helps. Additionally, make sure that you've properly set up the Tascam DR-40X as an interface and that your recording levels are set correctly. If you're still having trouble, I'd be happy to help you troubleshoot further.

    I've heard complaints about the noise levels coming from the DR-40/40X When using an external dynamic mic, can you speak to this? Your audio sounds quite clear so I'm wondering if you've experienced this issue, or if there are specific settings to prevent that from happening.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  4 роки тому

      Hi Hannah, this isn't an issue I've experienced. Dynamic mics are also generally better at rejecting background noise than condenser mics if you're recording in a less than perfect environment. It could be worth lowering your recording levels to pick up less noise and then boosting the levels in post processing.

    I am using this with two dynamic vocal microphones (SM48s). I have to really crank up the gain and am starting to get noticeable noise. Is there anything that can be done here, or is this just a limit of the preamps in this thing? I noticed the attenuation setting, and it looks like I can go to -6db, but I couldn't get it set to true 0. any tips?

    • @MikeRussell

    • @MikeRussell

      Hi Marissa, there is nothing to stop you doing this. Depending on the input on your recorder you may need an adapter. One tip for you, in order to make the edit easier for you perform a couple of claps before you start recording.
