    ARRI has been making great digital cameras since 2010. Canon is finally catching up. There was no Canon C200 shooting RAW video in 2010. ARRI still has a very organic look to it. Once Canon enters the 8K arena for under 10k, it'll have Red and ARRI by the collar. Some film makers really want that room to reframe the shot and to stabilize the shot in post production. It's going to happen within 10 years. Great video. This is a good review. It's fair. Both companies have excellent colour science.

      Mike Honcho right, but you can match cameras colors in post and he has made a lut to match to Sony A7iii with his Canon C200. Colors are such a personal preference and get edited depending on the feel people are going for so I don’t understand the hate of the Sony colors. Sure they aren’t Canon or Fuji, but I think they did a good job with the colors out of the A7iii and A6400. At the end of the day most people end up tweaking the colors in post so I just don’t understand I guess, but I guess people need to hate on something from Sony because they are doing a lot of things right.

    I love that when exposed correctly the C200 can have a similar image to the ARRI. I'm wondering if the dynamic range difference is due to the sensors, or due to Canon's RAW light is not being entirely true RAW. Great job!

    • @theyoungtravelier
      @theyoungtravelier 5 років тому

      Each bit can only capture 1 stop of dynamic range so in reality the 12 bit craw can only capture 12 full stops of data. The LOG format attempts to squeeze 16 bits of linear into 12 bits, but if you want to color grade heavily RED is still your choice

  • @scottsimmons6814
    @scottsimmons6814 5 років тому +1

    Nice to see this comparison, but I think you are looking at two completely different markets. Why not compare it to the Canon EOS C700 FF? The C700 has a far superior dynamic range to the C200.. Also ProResRAW support is becoming an issue where you can very easily over/under expose and recover in edit.

  • @GearZenChannel
    @GearZenChannel 5 років тому +7

    Sooooo.. expose correctly and watch the backlighting?

  • @ZenGeekDad
    @ZenGeekDad 5 років тому +6

    You skipped explaining WHY (/how) the ARRI can better recover over/under exposure. That's a classic bit depth issue. The latest C200 records in up to 12 bit. ARRI exceeds that at 16 bit (fudged into 12-bit somehow). That's 16 times the levels, to retain variations in luminance when your subject's lighting goes to either extreme. This extra recovery ability is stupid-familiar to every photographer who shoots in RAW. I notice you show the +2EV ARRI but not the +2EV C200, instead going right to the -4EV C200, which looks a little flat, *but* for a fair comparison, you *should* have graded that to that same luminance distribution (contrast, etc.) as you did the ARRI, and then judge the IQ on things like posterization & banding. I'm actually quite impressed with the IQ from the C200's -4EV footage, but would like very much to have seen the results at +4EV too.

      @mondobytes  5 років тому +4

      Funny you say that because that's how film is. You get more dynamic range with film but in Hollywood it's a trade-off for the convenience and cost. I feel that's the same here, I'd rather trade a few stops for cheaper, smaller and lighter form factor.

    Great to see the comparison - I intercut C300 II footage with ALEXA quite often, and it’s amazing how close you can get them. Canon really do have some of the best colour in the business.
    I would however like to point out a few things mentioned / not mentioned in your comparison which I think are important when asking the question “why is the Mini so much more expensive” as I have watched a few of these comparison videos now:
    - The Mini is referred to as a 2.8K camera both in this video and the subsequent colouring link. The Mini actually has a 3.4K sensor - it uses 2.8K when shooting in HD and 2K, 3.2K when shooting 3.2K or up-ressed UHD ProRes, and 3.4K when shooting Open Gate. It can also display what *isn’t* being recorded when not in Open Gate, allowing you to frame out lighting stands and mic booms easily.
    - The Mini sensor is larger than the C200 (28.25mm x 18.17mm compared with 24.6mm x 13.8mm) allowing it to use anamorphic lenses with no cropping (unlike the RED for example). It also has a higher pixel pitch (8.25μm v 6.4µm) - essentially ‘bigger’ photosites - resulting in cleaner images and better low light performance.
    - The Mini records ARRIRAW internally, which is an uncompressed RAW codec unlike pretty much everything else out there. This allows for tack-sharp green screen keys.
    - The Mini is able to record 200fps ProRes 4444 with no loss of quality and no sensor cropping at HD / 2K. Phantoms aside, this is almost entirely unique to the AMIRA and Mini cameras. I shoot a lot of food and we are constantly changing frame rates depending on the ingredient, and not having to change camera position due to cropping, or lose fidelity in the image is fantastic. On a side note it also changes frame rates instantly with a simple push of a button.
    - The mount can be swapped from PL to EF in about 60 seconds - no need to send it off to the factory.
    - The Mini effectively has an ARRI UMC built into it - allowing control of lenses through a wireless focus unit - you just need to plug the motor into the LBUS on the PL mount. That’s a $5K piece of equipment thrown in right there!
    - In the other grading video the EVF is mentioned as being subpar. I am going to have to contest that - have you ever used the viewfinder that comes with an F5/F55/FS7, or a RED? The ARRI EVF is clearly the best 1st party EVF on the market! Also nobody wants to use a big touchscreen outside in bright daylight :P
    There are cameras out there with *some* of the features above, but to have ALL of them in one, reliable, precision-engineered package - that’s the reason you pay so much for ARRI. That, and the fantastic image of course!

    I have started my cinematography learning session after 20 years in photography. I can only suggest for big budget movies ARRI can handle difficult situation in cinematic scenes ,color science and depth is more real,the bigger sensor size can provide the moving image more real,the dynamic range is beyond comparison ,the rental is pretty ok .on the other hand for UA-cam video or small tv serial canon system is fine. It depends what you want to produce. lastly you can choose some more interesting topic to run your UA-cam channel.views are personal

      @andreasoberg2021 5 років тому

      No you can't. The only thing you could do here is underexpose the girl to recover some of the highlight, but normally you want to avoid underexposing your main subject since it introduces noise

    I grabbed some footage online from the two, and Realized that Chromatic aberration on c200 is more apparent specially at spot where there are repetitive patterns such as plants leaves, water reflection from sunlight, also there are some visible aliasing artifacts when its not in 100%focus and when exposure plays a big part and its pretty hard to do some intense color grading on c200 in davinci resolve, it produced some unwanted noise, specially on shot that were really underexposed or overexposed, on the other hand alexa does fine even if you boost contrast and exposure like crazy, you can play with it like crazy and can achieved the look you want no matter what without destroying it, well just my 2 cents as a noob colourist. hehe

    Great comparison! It really shows that if you expose correctly, most of the cameras look good but where the pro ones shine, are image manipulation. I'm not sure if I missed it but I'd love to know the settings at which both of the cameras were shot.

    What codec were you using for the C200 and ARRI? AFAIK the ARRI is a 16bit raw, was the C200 RAW too? The C200 produces 10 or 12bit RAW, 2 stops of under or over exposure is hard at 10bits and a little less challenging with 12bits of color depth. At 16bits I'm not surprised that 4 stops is recoverable, since on a 5D2 at 14bits 2 stops under isn't terribly challenging. When shooting with my 5D2 I try to expose under by at least a stop in bright environments, since with ~11stops of DR you only have 2 stops above and 9 stops below the optimal exposure. By underexposing 1 or 2 stops you are gaining about 2 stops of headroom to recover highlights, without totally losing your shadows. Yes the ARRI is a phenomenal camera, but if you designed some tests that were a little less biased towards the ARRIs 16bit color depth, the C200 will look pretty good.

    Canon C200 Body is Magnesium not Plastic, thats just the shell. I had the C200 in some real extreme conditions same and it never failed on me. But same goes for the mini too.
    How did you push the RAW files? In Premiere, Resolve or RAW Development tool?

    When viewing in motion, for some reason the C200 looks a little flatter and the Arri looks more three-dimensional, no idea why, I guess it is a result of many tiny differences.

    Arri’s menu system is even better than Canon too Imo, which is crazy to think about, considering how good Canons is. I’ve heard DP’s talk about traveling to different countries and the Alexa Mini seems to be in every rental house too, so you can rely on being able to rent when needed, or if something happens to the camera, it’s easily serviced. But.. like a lot of gear, the lower cost one will be better for most people haha. Great video.

  • @fengwan6008
    @fengwan6008 5 років тому +1

    I think the reason why arri so expensive is because it faces to the filming industry, while c200 is for individuals.
    The Arri alexa footages are always easier for the colorist to processing.And time is money,especially when a film has thousands of shots.
    For the individuals,Arii Alexa is way more expensive than C200,because $75000 is a lot of money.
    For the film industry, Arri Alexa is way more cheap than C200,because $75000 is much cheaper than the time the Alexa saves.
