@@michaelbedford8017 Don't forget Annie Haslam either. I fell in love with her voice when our AOR station here in Pittsburgh played Scheherazade and Other Stories for their midnight album back in the day. (Random observation...in every Steeleye Span video I've seen, it looks like Maddy is having the time of her life.) You aren't THE Michael Bedford, are you? You know, "More than a Kiss?"
Unlike yours truly, this hasn't aged a day. There's something truly magical about this performance, with the harmonies caressing my soul. Maddy is such a gorgeous girl, and what a voice she has. The fella's aren't bad, either.
The technology of the time was so much more advanced than many people realise. The electric instruments are all cordless, and the violin can even produce a pizzicato sound when being played with the bow. Amazing!
They used to try and replicate the original record. The musicians would go into studio and lay down the backing track which was used as playback, this allowed the musicians to be flamboyant when TOTP was performed, hence the bowed pizzicato. The vocals would often then be sung live. It’s such a close harmony, I’m in two minds as to whether they were miming or not.
Been enjoying Steeleye Span for over 40 years now. Renaissance, too. My goodness, did I have the hots for Maddy and Annie Haslam back then. Maddy, Annie, Sandy Denny and Alison Krauss are on my Mt. Rushmore of Angelic Voices.
Kids these days, what with your 19th century "renditions". You ain't heard music if you haven't heard the 1765 version of this as sung by the Humphreys down in Oxfordshire.
The best thing about Maddy's performance is that, unlike too many artists today, she is not trying to be "sexy", she is just singing a song and trying to express it in the mood of the song. Incidentally, she is charming, expressive, and cheery, all of which make her naturally sexy.
For a minute I was struck and thought they had got Stephen Stills to play the bass for them, but it could not be. Never knew how much Kemp looked like Stills when he was young
Ses incredible considering it was the same year that the Sex Pistols made their debut with Anarchy.. Yet ironically Steeleye brought out (in my opinion) their best album that year; as old fashioned as they were in that era.
Guess what I found on the way home? It was in the Hospital grounds.I thought the lyrics of this song were quite apt, plus its a great song anyway.Today was wonderful, every minute spent with you is time well spent. You are funny, clever, gorgeous and so kind.I long to be by your side forever.Sleep tight my Angel.xxxxx.
All around my hat I will wear the green willow And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it It's all for my true love who's far, far away Fare thee well cold winter and fare thee well cold frost Nothing have I gained but my own true love I've lost I'll sing and I'll be merry when occasion I do see He's a false deluding young man, let him go farewell he The other night he brought me a fine diamond ring But he thought to have deprived me of a far better thing But I being careful like lovers ought to be He's a false deluding young man, let him go farewell he And all around my hat I will wear the green willow And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it It's all for my true love who's far, far away Here's a half a pound of reasons, and a quarter pound of sense A small sprig of time and as much of prudence You mix them all together and you will plainly see He's a false deluding young man, let him go farewell he And all around my hat I will wear the green willow And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it It's all for my true love who's far far away All around my hat I will wear the green willow And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it It's all for my true love who's far, far away All around my hat I will wear the green willow And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it It's all for my true love who's far, far away
Does anyone have the audience perspective video of this? My mum was there dancing and top of the pops lost the file of the audience. She was there when this band was playing ?
No jumping around ---- rolling on the floor like having a fit--- twerking or sliding uphill ---- puffing weed smoke from your nostrils ---- pretending that you can sing --- lip sync ---- ONLY straight up musicians ---- MADDY PRIOR especially ---- an absolute voice ----- crystal clear (with her clothes on)
I sang along shouting ARSE in all the right places!! It's been impossible not to after seeing the wonderful Jed Thomas all those years ago. ARSE HORSE ARSE!!

God, they could carry a tune. Great harmonies.
All of us looked young back in the 70's, God help us now!

Maddy is such fun. Great to see someone on top of their game actually enjoying it
I've loved this band since 1st hearing them in the 70's

Excellent to be reminded of these great artists thank you!
RIP Bob Johnson and Tim Hart. (The 2 guitarists in this clip)

Calm down; I have made similar comments. It's worse today, what with the curse of the dreaded Autotune. :-)
So amazing that it sounds like a mandolin. Ah, the joys of mime.

But this is a fabulous song
wonderful Maddy, bringing singing alive- fabulous
Instant love when first heard Steeleye Span in 1972... and Maddy is so easy on the eyes and ears.
what a voice that lead singer has and infectious smile.
Still love it!! Great harmony!
Love Maddy's voice.....
Utterly brilliant! Takes me right back to being a kid. 👏👏👏👏
😢tz
Brings tears to my eyes
I haven't heard this song since the 1820s. This is probably the best version.
I'm only 110, but I have to say they knew how to write songs back then.

Great song and good guitar, classic Tele :)
Look closely. There is a Gibson SG as well, hence the rich sound.

All around my hat I will wear the green willow
And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day
And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it
It's all for my true love who's far, far away
Fare thee well cold winter and fare thee well cold frost
Nothing have I gained but my own true love I've lost
I'll sing and I'll be merry when occasion I do see
He's a false deluding young man, let him go farewell he
The other night he brought me a fine diamond ring
But he thought to have deprived me of a far better thing
But I being careful like lovers ought to be

And all around my hat I will wear the green willow
And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day
And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it
It's all for my true love who's far, far away
Here's a half a pound of reasons, and a quarter pound of sense
A small sprig of time and as much of prudence
You mix them all together and you will plainly see
He's a false deluding young man, let him go farewell he
And all around my hat I will wear the green willow
And all around my hat for a twelve-month and a day
And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it
It's all for my true love who's far far away

If they inspired fleet foxes then I love em
And upon my head i shall wear my Green Beret.

Timeless catchy folk song which seems to celebrate Pagan Handfasting based on the 'year & a day' lyric...
Pagan handfasting?
No.

ARSE HORSE ARSE!!
Does anyone here have any idea of what a "green wiilowan" is?
My hat my hat , all around my hat
Ik herinner me nog Elly de Waards gevit op Steeleye Span in de Volkskrant, vintage Azijnbode - terwijl ze zo fucking briljant waren!
Status Quo have a cover... :o)
It's pretty good. They also perform with Maddy. It's on you tube.
Babe !
Who else is here because of the fast show?
I am. All around my ARSE!
....Arrrrse
uh...she is not wearing a hat
duh
Silly pop song...one of their weakest moments
One of their most popular songs, you mean.
Sam, such a nonsensical post. Clearly not your best moment.
I so hope all are well. Swe them warm up for Jethro Tull. My heart ❤ warmed for S E S.
