Psychology Professor Dr. Jordan B. Peterson explains why dominance hierarchies based on competence are essential. You can become a respectable member of society by striving to do your job well and making the world a better place instead of making it worse for everyone.
Dr. Peterson's new book is available for pre-order:

This speech made me want to be a plumber... Not any type of plumber. A good, honest and conscientious one!!!
Well, you can be a bad plumber too... if you know what I mean.
Judging from your name its the family business ;)
It's actually insane the potential income in being a tradesperson. Just do it. You'll not regret it when you're 60 and have stupid amounts of money
I need plumbing done in a few days. Are you still available? If so, text me cause I am not a plumber and that job can get messy.

I feel like the fundamental problem with my generation (including myself). Is that we were taught "You're all great just the way you are." rather than "You all have the potential to be great at something, but it's hard work."
Parents think, and like to tell their children they're great - it's a disaster.
Those are both true
Well said
Exactly.
Was always told the latter and I turned out pretty good, gonna say that to my kids. Lets be real kids aren't shit, they are incomplete work and as george carlin once said "I don't give credit to incomplete work"
This speech was better than any TED Talk I've ever heard.
Beulah Lee I am not disputing that, what you're saying actually reinforces my point. This speech was just that much better than any TED Talk that I've seen.
Yes addictive
You haven't watched many, have you...
Exactly. Most TED talks are complete self-congratulatory drivel. People attend them just because a TED stamp is put on them, as if this were some sort of sign of greatness. Nowadays, every city and every university does a TEDx event, and the number of speakers (around the world each year) goes into tens of thousands. It's true that some may have an interesting personal perspective to offer, but most don't. It's all about memorizing your speech, practicing, and delivering it based on TEDx standards. There's zero spontaneity, zero off the cuff thinking, and zero ad-libbing. Which is why most TEDx presentations are boring as hell, come across as pretentious crap, and in 93% cases (of such talks) most people with half a brain won't learn anything new.
John Johnson i think they also put their content in english lots of people who dont have english as their primary language seem to falter as they deliver their speech rendering it either ineffective or incomplete. . Putting subtitles may help its content quality wise
Legends say every time Jordan Peterson's voice cracks a universe implodes
And a parallel universe is born, where more people have a greater proclivity to sorting themselves out and making something of themselves in the world. Amen...uhm...i mean, Bpeterson.
That's true, roughly speaking.
A parallel universe full of clean rooms.
Mine did
A philosophical supernova
The passion emanating from this man is truly inspiring.
60 Second Success yeahh I can feel that as well.Very inspiring
Saransh Minocha Is it just me, or is the energy coming off this guy a bit intense? Also a bit chaotic. It has me wondering if he isn't microdosing LSD or something like that
James Conners no just straight passion. He believes strongly and I felt it
If he is microdosing, then I better find my acid dealer.
That last statement, pure passion.

I remember growing up, I was told that if I worked hard enough, I could be anything I wanted to be... Nowadays, I get the feeling young people are told you deserve to be anything you want to be.
Christopher Lewis the world owes us nothing, we have to make things for ourselves
**** **** Exactly.
In my case, I wasn't really told to be anything... I'm 22 btw, grew up in Victoria BC.
Nowadays, young people believe, because they parents told them and advertising told them, that they are special and they deserve everything they want because they are worth it... And they really believe that. They grow up to be miserable.
@@tiotoxico As someone who's 22 I agree with you. My generation has been fed entitlement from the time we entered the world. I don't believe I deserve to be successful unless I give the world a reason why I should.
I won't let u down, mr. Peterson. I will make something great of myself.
A year now, how has it been?

Subconscious dude yall dumb😂😂
This is the type of shit that makes me cry. It's the things I should've known and been told years ago but only now have been finally understanding just because of Jordan B Peterson.
I've not been doing so well recently over the past few years and have gotten more hopeless about things but what Jordan Peterson has been revealing to me are the actual things--responsibilities--that I myself can feel I can achieve.
He does such a good job at explaining what an ideal human being should do and be like, and he's not forceful or preachy about it, too. It seems like truths that one gravitates toward and is compelled to, that don't have to be aggressively forced onto others for them to make sense of.
PlushieStar I hope you get to feeling better :)
same here
PlushieStar Check out Adam Carolla. He's big on this stuff.
PlushieStar pick one thing and study it little by little and eventually you will master it
PlushieStar hey man me too. Failed out of college. Twice. Rutgers and community college. Developed an alcohol addiction drug addiction, ran my mother 10's of thousands of dollars and we're already in poverty to begin with. Working a shitty job at stop and shop. Resentful to the world and especially to myself. Saw no value in me. Then Jordan Peterson came along. Now I'm self teaching myself in html and cuss and Javascript and learning ox design. More responsible. I relapse every now and then but in 4 months I've made so my by head way. Got an internship now and hopefully going to get a fulltime in July. Least I'll shoot for it. I have Mr. Peterson to thank for that. Only because he gave me a different perspective. That's all I needed. Just a different better perspective. You'll get there friend we all will. See you at the top
I love this man and his passion SO much.

We need to reward dr. Peterson.
this is a depressing truth for all the stupid incompetent people like myself.
You can be competent at something, and probably a bunch of different things.
stevemcgee99 yea flipping burgers isn't exactly motivating. I don't have a future that's worth doing.
This doesn't have to stay that way. But you need to start sorting yourself out, step by step. Doing something is better than doing nothing.
WildCard I've tried man and facts are facts. not everyone is smart enough to do something meaningful in life. look up Peterson's videos on iq
You don't need to act stupid. Your writing shows something in your brain works. And just because you can't envision a life doing something other than flipping burgers today doesn't mean there isn't a future for you doing something you care about. This is not the channel to get sympathy to validate a quitter attitude.
More people need to see this. We need to do something about it. 2,000,000 people watched the Joe Rogan podcast with Peterson on it. Imagine is all 2,000,000 of us shared some of his shorter videos. We could change the fucking world if people would be willing to listen. Jordan isn't perfect, he's not infallible and I disagree with him on certain points but man some of what he says is fucking phenomenal we need to spread the word. I'm doing it. You guys should join me :D
yes brother, I join you.
I am from India
Thank you Bite-sized Philosophy for your hard work cutting the lectures of Prof. Dr. Peterson into small fragments. I don't currently have time to watch his full lectures and without you I'd miss out on genius stuff like this.
I can only recommend you to read some of his stuff, reading is faster and you might absorb it much more properly.
”We don’t need people to cause more trouble,
We need people to solve problems”
I love him because he talks like his life depends on it
You know you're a boss when they give you 2 mics.
it seems weird when Jordan Peterson gets mad, it's like seeing your dad cry almost, like it's a different person
I'm almost 50 yrs old and still feel like I just received the greatest talk from my dad. Dr. Peterson is exceptionally inspiring.
"Make the world that put you here happy that you were put there."
Dr. Peterson FTW
That's flipping inspiring.
The most striking thing is, it is all common sense. That is what JP is able to focus on and highlight for us. Thanks JP👍
... go and make something of yourself, read a book and tidy your room. Can anyone imagine the state of mankind if every man had a father like Jordan Peterson.
Peterson is by far the best teacher I never had.
Sometimes I worry slightly that Jordan will have some physical fatigue problems later in life with the stress he has seen.
OneStauffder Sirynch passion keeps you young
He and his family had a lot of health problems. He talked about it and his unique diet on Joe Rogan.
Well, his physique has been put to good use then.
He does get very depressed at times.

“Be a little bit of light on the World instead of a Blight”. Brilliant! 👍🏼

Jordan *BADASS* Peterson
Discovered Jordan Peterson three days ago and cann't get enough of his speeches!
Great to hear! If you ever want to listen to his full length lectures, you can find them in the description. They are fantastic to listen to, if you can find the time. My favorite is his Maps of Meaning course (2017).
Find what you're good at and go forth with gusto.
Proof that the truth will set you free. All he speaks is the truth. Thank you Mr. Peterson
Dr. Peterson explains in 8 minutes what took me years to attempt relate to my family, and is with 4 minutes of segue.
this man fills the soul, he gives me the answers i need to hear not those i want too. bless this man!
He is a example of what a real 'alpha' man is about. He shows clearly that working in yourself has great ramifications.
An alpha male their is a phrase we never get tired of hearing a woman pleaser working a shit boring job and criticising anyone who doesn't want his life yawn 🤔
Bro the neck tie is a symbol of bondage to societies norms
Well Peterson that is an awful lot of word euphemisms for a sqeeky voiced nerd educated fool this bloke like all his ilk education is overpriced and unnecessary and beyond the means of the common man

I love this guy.
yes yes yes YES. Tell your family tell your friends. Show this to everyone!
I love how Dr. Peterson starts to crack at the end out of sheer passion and emotion. You know this man believes every word he speaks to the very fiber of his being

His passion is beautiful.
He's truly an excellent speaker. I love how he always says words like "POWER" and "DEATH" in an extra dramatic way.
This speech by Jordan Peterson is what keeps me pushing. So much motivation to gain from it.
The passion to help is overwhelming
Incredible message! Truly heart touching. Thank you J.P.
JBP's intelligence frightens me sometimes. Not because of what he's saying, or because he is an intellectually powerful individual. Rather, because I don't know how I can ever be this articulate and composed. When I hear someone advocating for so-called "democratic socialism," I don't know how to refute them properly--I just cite that C.S. Lewis quote about compassionate tyranny and say that it's immoral to steal from people even if you vote for it. When I hear someone advocating for unfettered abortion rights, or socialized healthcare, or railing against imagined institutional racism, I don't know how to refute them properly. Oh, I can do so given a few hours to articulate an argument. But I can't do it on the spot like Dr. Peterson. And that frightens me, because I can't seem to articulate the opinions that I have spent lots of time cultivating and improving.
Mohammad Mohd I think I remember in another video of Dr. Peterson where he says that a way to strengthen your ability to think for yourself is to constantly challenge your opinions by exposing yourself to the opposite viewpoint. For example, if you are pro-life, you should talk to and listen to what people who are pro-choice have to say about the issue, because if all you hear are pro-life statements and viewpoints, you will never see WHY you think that way or if it is even a strong enough statement because it will only become an echo chamber and when someone challenges you, you will not know why you think that way. Also remember that Dr. Peterson has been doing all of this for many many years, so he has seen many things throughout his life and has been able to develop these abilities. I believe that you are fairly young in age, so imagine if you began to challenge your opinions, how you will be in a few years! It's worth a shot, so begin to read and be willing to listen to others who do not agree with you on things, as you may learn more from them than those who share your opinions
Why don't you have a go now?
I'm a democratic socialist and I don't think anything Peterson has said here changes my mind. I'm not wedded to socialism as an ideology; I want to believe whatever seems most reasonable. So persuade me
You need to write out your opinions and review them, just as you have with your first comment. Having them under scrutiny online (anonymously for safety of course) will help you ask a lot more questions and fill in a lot more holes too. Or write them in notepad or whatever and look through them yourself. The more you listen, read, write/speak, analyze, repeat; the more you'll understand your own ideas and be able to communicate them to other people. Doesn't really matter if you have an average IQ. Different levels of innate intelligence come with different challenges, even if someone _seems_ to be better than you. "The grass is always greener on the other side". JP has been on the spot so much that it seems to come naturally for him. After watching a lot of his content, I can say he's not perfect (obviously you can say that about anyone and be right, but JP seems to be lionized by a lot of people), but still a great person with a great mind.
he's only been doing it longer, practicing honesty longer, and speaking out when he knows he will lose the argument longer. the last one is key. if you don't lose some arguments, you can't correct your own fallacious thinking. this is critical to being a Truth breather.
Some people articulate better in writing, rather than speaking. Maybe if you could practice the latter it would improve. Try to talk slowly and be aware of what you're saying rather than programmatically blurt out words to finish your sentences faster because you're afraid you'll stutter. Talking from experience here when trying to get my point across to people more intelligent and with more experience than I posses.
The passion in the closing statement is amazing and so true
This is one of his best videos!!
I love this man!!!!
Is this the best motivational speech ever?
genuine hierarchies of competence seem to be dissolving in the modern world with a general lack of accountability - it's just got too big
I so enjoy working with people who are the tops in their field. It's a genuine pleasure.
Epic rant! Never seen him so fired up before and I've been listening to his lectures for a couple months now
Great truth and speech here.
I absolutely love this guy. I was half the man I was before I started listening to him. I want to be the best: not the best in the world but the best that I can be. I want to sit with the best of them in my field and actually contribute by working hard and knuckling down. I’m not a plumber but I’ll tell you something, I’ve met the best plumber in my area. He’s expensive but man alive, his joints don’t leak, he knows his stuff and he doesn’t mess about! I wanna be that guy, in my field. Thank you Jordan Peterson.
This was so good I had to have it on repeat! Preach !!
Smart intelligent truthful thanks I will tell my children to watch we need someone like him
My brother thought this was Kermit the frog's voice as he was listening from the other side of the room, listening.
He must’ve been thinking- damn Kermit spitting some knowledge!

I was so moved by what he said that by the end of it, I just clapped involuntarily. I never done that before 😅.
I could watch Jordan B. Peterson's videos all day but I need to get stuff done! He's the voice of reason and thank goodness he's around.
God Bless this man
Exclamation mark properly used in the title. Every sentence he uttered ended with one. Jesus!
I' rarely see such a combination of passion and intellect before. What an honor to just listen to him.
i love this man. his passion for people and the world is so refreshing.
What a great man !!!
This video should be shown to kids everyday before class
This was the video that changed my life. I was lost for years not knowing what career path to take. I was lost in a big loop and the worst thing is I knew that I was stuck in a loop, and never knew if I was going to break free from it. When Peterson started talking about being the best at something like a plumber or a carpenter etc, it sparked something inside me and I started to follow my passion for electricity and wiring from when I was a young kid. Now I'm currently on the path of getting a career as an electrician and I've never looked back, I love it!
I like when Dr Peterson suddenly stops walking and talking, he is extracting the essence of his knowledge to share it with us...! What a wonderful human being. I just found him and I’m watching all videos that have his name on it! How lucky I am. Thank you Dr Peterson.
"So, you tell young people ‘I don't care what you gonna do but go out there and make something of yourself for god sake, be an honest person and work and get to the top of whatever it is that you wanna get to the top of. You know, and stand up for yourself like a respectable human beeing and be a bit of a light on a world insteed of a blight’. You know, and you can tell young people that and they haven't been told that by anyone now, so young man are so hungry for that that it's painful to watch. They are so reliefed when someone finally comes up and says ‘hey, you know, you get your act together a bit, discipline yourself, see if you can learn to tell the truth, concentrate on something for a year or two, you can be a bloody world beater’ they think ‘really? that's possible? that would be interesting, that might make life worth living’. It's like yeah, it might, so why ain't you gonna do it. That's what the damn universities were supossed to be teaching people, they've forgotten that."
WHY NOBODY TOLD ME THAT EARLIER? WHY I LEARNED THAT NOW, WHEN I'M AT UNI?
Better than where I am now at 27... but making a fast change during quarantine...
Peterson is the father figure I never had.
Every single time I watch this video, the fire within me gets bigger and bigger. Thank you Dr Peterson and I hope you keep recovering and share some more wisdom soon!
Such a great video, Peterson is going to go down as one of the greatest people of our time. Listen to the passion with which he speaks, that's rare, you don't that many people these days that are so passionate about the betterment of humanity. It's people like this is push humanity forward and go down as heroes. However, the only way his message won't be in vain is if we start practicing it ourselves. If we live a good and meaningful life, people will see it, they'll become interested, theyll follow our example and maybe we can bring humanity back from the dark age that's creeping up on us.
I love JP's "It's like, WRONG!" statements.
My joints are always perfectly rolled...wait, what was he talking about again?
CeRocks sometimes I'll roll nice looking ones but they'll burn like shit
maybe you should work on perfecting a useful skill.
Hahahha comment of the decade dude, kudos

"HE GAVE US HOPE", this will read in his plaque.
Holy shit. I've never seen him raise his voice like that. it's frightening really. Better get my life back on track before Dr. Peterson raises his voice like that again.
It IS refreshing hearing this. I'm going into 10th grade and throughout my life teachers have constantly try to destroy intellectual hierarchies and the concept of the alpha male or ideal attractive female, but the ultimate plight of the education system comes to people being able to regurgitate all they hear in class on a test rather than genuine intelligence. People who are enjoying posting narcissistic photos 24/7 end up getting better grades than someone that spends time reading and watching informative pieces on psychology, philosophy and science.
Brought tears because he never really gets emotional. The last couple seconds you can hear it in his voice it is bringing him to tears as well. He cares. Great man.
