    Psychology Professor Dr. Jordan B. Peterson explains why dominance hierarchies based on competence are essential. You can become a respectable member of society by striving to do your job well and making the world a better place instead of making it worse for everyone.

    I feel like the fundamental problem with my generation (including myself). Is that we were taught "You're all great just the way you are." rather than "You all have the potential to be great at something, but it's hard work."

      Exactly. Most TED talks are complete self-congratulatory drivel. People attend them just because a TED stamp is put on them, as if this were some sort of sign of greatness. Nowadays, every city and every university does a TEDx event, and the number of speakers (around the world each year) goes into tens of thousands. It's true that some may have an interesting personal perspective to offer, but most don't. It's all about memorizing your speech, practicing, and delivering it based on TEDx standards. There's zero spontaneity, zero off the cuff thinking, and zero ad-libbing. Which is why most TEDx presentations are boring as hell, come across as pretentious crap, and in 93% cases (of such talks) most people with half a brain won't learn anything new.

    This is the type of shit that makes me cry. It's the things I should've known and been told years ago but only now have been finally understanding just because of Jordan B Peterson.
    I've not been doing so well recently over the past few years and have gotten more hopeless about things but what Jordan Peterson has been revealing to me are the actual things--responsibilities--that I myself can feel I can achieve.
    He does such a good job at explaining what an ideal human being should do and be like, and he's not forceful or preachy about it, too. It seems like truths that one gravitates toward and is compelled to, that don't have to be aggressively forced onto others for them to make sense of.

Developed an alcohol addiction drug addiction, ran my mother 10's of thousands of dollars and we're already in poverty to begin with. Working a shitty job at stop and shop. Resentful to the world and especially to myself. Saw no value in me. Then Jordan Peterson came along. Now I'm self teaching myself in html and cuss and Javascript and learning ox design. More responsible. I relapse every now and then but in 4 months I've made so my by head way. Got an internship now and hopefully going to get a fulltime in July. Least I'll shoot for it. JBP's intelligence frightens me sometimes. Not because of what he's saying, or because he is an intellectually powerful individual. Rather, because I don't know how I can ever be this articulate and composed. When I hear someone advocating for so-called "democratic socialism," I don't know how to refute them properly--I just cite that C.S. Lewis quote about compassionate tyranny and say that it's immoral to steal from people even if you vote for it. When I hear someone advocating for unfettered abortion rights, or socialized healthcare, or railing against imagined institutional racism, I don't know how to refute them properly. Oh, I can do so given a few hours to articulate an argument. But I can't do it on the spot like Dr. Peterson. And that frightens me, because I can't seem to articulate the opinions that I have spent lots of time cultivating and improving.

    • @monika1885

      Mohammad Mohd I think I remember in another video of Dr. Peterson where he says that a way to strengthen your ability to think for yourself is to constantly challenge your opinions by exposing yourself to the opposite viewpoint. For example, if you are pro-life, you should talk to and listen to what people who are pro-choice have to say about the issue, because if all you hear are pro-life statements and viewpoints, you will never see WHY you think that way or if it is even a strong enough statement because it will only become an echo chamber and when someone challenges you, you will not know why you think that way. Also remember that Dr. Peterson has been doing all of this for many many years, so he has seen many things throughout his life and has been able to develop these abilities. I believe that you are fairly young in age, so imagine if you began to challenge your opinions, how you will be in a few years! It's worth a shot, so begin to read and be willing to listen to others who do not agree with you on things, as you may learn more from them than those who share your opinions

    • @waulie_palnuts
      @waulie_palnuts 7 років тому +11

      Why don't you have a go now?
      I'm a democratic socialist and I don't think anything Peterson has said here changes my mind. I'm not wedded to socialism as an ideology; I want to believe whatever seems most reasonable. So persuade me

    • @Yotrymp
      @Yotrymp 7 років тому +12

      You need to write out your opinions and review them, just as you have with your first comment. Having them under scrutiny online (anonymously for safety of course) will help you ask a lot more questions and fill in a lot more holes too. Or write them in notepad or whatever and look through them yourself. The more you listen, read, write/speak, analyze, repeat; the more you'll understand your own ideas and be able to communicate them to other people. Doesn't really matter if you have an average IQ. Different levels of innate intelligence come with different challenges, even if someone _seems_ to be better than you. "The grass is always greener on the other side". JP has been on the spot so much that it seems to come naturally for him. After watching a lot of his content, I can say he's not perfect (obviously you can say that about anyone and be right, but JP seems to be lionized by a lot of people), but still a great person with a great mind.

      he's only been doing it longer, practicing honesty longer, and speaking out when he knows he will lose the argument longer. the last one is key. if you don't lose some arguments, you can't correct your own fallacious thinking. this is critical to being a Truth breather.

    • @psc93krp
      @psc93krp 6 років тому +8

      Some people articulate better in writing, rather than speaking. Maybe if you could practice the latter it would improve. Try to talk slowly and be aware of what you're saying rather than programmatically blurt out words to finish your sentences faster because you're afraid you'll stutter. Talking from experience here when trying to get my point across to people more intelligent and with more experience than I posses.

    This was the video that changed my life. I was lost for years not knowing what career path to take. I was lost in a big loop and the worst thing is I knew that I was stuck in a loop, and never knew if I was going to break free from it. When Peterson started talking about being the best at something like a plumber or a carpenter etc, it sparked something inside me and I started to follow my passion for electricity and wiring from when I was a young kid. Now I'm currently on the path of getting a career as an electrician and I've never looked back, I love it!

    "So, you tell young people ‘I don't care what you gonna do but go out there and make something of yourself for god sake, be an honest person and work and get to the top of whatever it is that you wanna get to the top of. You know, and stand up for yourself like a respectable human beeing and be a bit of a light on a world insteed of a blight’. You know, and you can tell young people that and they haven't been told that by anyone now, so young man are so hungry for that that it's painful to watch. They are so reliefed when someone finally comes up and says ‘hey, you know, you get your act together a bit, discipline yourself, see if you can learn to tell the truth, concentrate on something for a year or two, you can be a bloody world beater’ they think ‘really? that's possible? that would be interesting, that might make life worth living’. It's like yeah, it might, so why ain't you gonna do it. That's what the damn universities were supossed to be teaching people, they've forgotten that."
    WHY NOBODY TOLD ME THAT EARLIER? WHY I LEARNED THAT NOW, WHEN I'M AT UNI?

    Such a great video, Peterson is going to go down as one of the greatest people of our time. Listen to the passion with which he speaks, that's rare, you don't that many people these days that are so passionate about the betterment of humanity. It's people like this is push humanity forward and go down as heroes. However, the only way his message won't be in vain is if we start practicing it ourselves. If we live a good and meaningful life, people will see it, they'll become interested, theyll follow our example and maybe we can bring humanity back from the dark age that's creeping up on us.

    It IS refreshing hearing this. I'm going into 10th grade and throughout my life teachers have constantly try to destroy intellectual hierarchies and the concept of the alpha male or ideal attractive female, but the ultimate plight of the education system comes to people being able to regurgitate all they hear in class on a test rather than genuine intelligence. People who are enjoying posting narcissistic photos 24/7 end up getting better grades than someone that spends time reading and watching informative pieces on psychology, philosophy and science.
