Enough about me, though. What did YOU all think of Death Stranding? Game of the Year? Century? Or did you feel even worse about it than I did?
Also, the final outtake is my thanks to you for watching all of my ranting.

I really enjoyed this game and I can see where you are coming from, but if you do give this game another shot I would suggest playing at least to episode 4 and how you feel after that, and you should be really close to it like another hour.

I am glad Death Stranding exists; it's different, I've never played anything like it before.
For my first 30 or so hours of this game I actually really enjoyed the mechanics. I'd take my time through the world and have fun just making deliveries; I knew what I was getting into when I bought the game. I also played in anticipation for the cutscenes and was especially intrigued by Mads Mickelson's character. But After those 30 hours, around that bloody snowy mountain bit, I found myself being annoyed at the gameplay and decided to rush through the rest of the game as fast as possible to get it over with.
I hated it. And loved it. I'm very confused, just like the internet seems to be.

I haven't played it, but if what you say is true, I think I'll stick to let's players for this one. I've got Nier Automata for my fun gameplay and epic story fix. Actually, that game hammers the "you're not alone" idea way better than this one in just 5 minutes.

Hi Cadds. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion about the game and explaining why you felt the way you did. I can see why other people like the game, but from what I can tell about it, it's not something that interests me either. Personally, if I wanted to play a game where you're a courier who tries to make a difference on a post-apocalyptic America, I would just play Fallout: New Vegas. Thanks for the video.

I loved it. I don't need it to be another bang boom action game. I loved putting on a podcast, going on a long gorgeous yet creepy and weird trek, and then feeling like I've created bonds with complete strangers as I study their paths through an area, leave flags that also help, etc. etc. I understand why it's so divisive and it's... kind of hard for me to recommend it? But I adored it.

It being so soul-crushing while still being mechanically deep (how to organize your load, working together with strangers to build structures to make your lives easier, keeping balance on poor footing, planning routes through/away from BT territories) kind of drives home the fact that everything in this world is miserable. There's a lot of goofy Kojima bits like the whole Monster Energy thing, and some of the dialogue feels very silly and fourth-wall-breaking just for the sake of being a video game, but that's what I signed up for. A common opinion I've heard about this game is that it's the most expensive niche indie title of all time, and I think that hits it right on the head.

I can definitely see why some people wouldn't enjoy this (it's certainly meant to be consumed in large chunks at a time which people may not have spare), but I feel like going into it with the mindset of "I will give it X hours before I expect something amazing to happen" is the wrong attitude to have

3:35 HOLY SHIT SOMEBODY MADE A VIDEO ABOUT THIS GAME AND THEY KNEW HOW TO HOLD THE TRIGGERS
I can see that this is likely going to be a largely negative view, but almost everyone that defends this game knows it's just not for everyone. Giving it 9.5 hrs is more than enough to say "it just wasn't for me."
    Having finished the video:
"You only do things for other players for the sake of getting more likes."
Uhhh, nope. I sure as shit haven't been spending time putting ziplines all over the mountain for likes, or delivering lost equipment that I could have easily used myself for them. It's to help people the same way I've been getting helped, like the few ziplines that were already there for me to connect to.
For me, I don't find the gameplay boring or tedious, I genuinely enjoy planning my routes, cargo limits, and adapting my plans as things change or I realise mistakes I made initially, and I enjoy simply being able to help others in ways that I could never do in any souls type game.
Besides the writing being a bit meh a chunk of the time, I really don't think this game has failed in any other sense, and I really dislike this whole thing where people say it's just their opinion but the language they use throughout makes it sound like everything they say is objective.
The game isn't for everyone, it's for those people like me that enjoy the simplicity and often chill gameplay, a very interesting premise, and helping others just for the sake of it.

I get it that people might like the game for the 'hiking experience' and 'it's supposed to feel bleak and hopeless an monotone', that 'it's not a game for everyone' and very 'artistic'. However, are we forgetting this is not a £10-20 game, but a full £40 AAA title? If this was priced as an indie experimental game, I would try it, but this is unreasonable.
Those who say that in the future people will think it was an underrated gem etc: by that time the price would have dropped or it becomes so obsolete and expensive that only fans would re-visit it.

The biggest problem is that if Kojimas name weren't attached to it, Death Stranding would be universally lauded as a slightly above average experimental game that would be quickly forgotten after a few months. If the emotion you're trying to instill in a player is dread and tedium there's much better ways to do it other than making the gameplay bad to prove a message.

You really struck the nail on the head when you talked about how the game didn't resonate with YOU. You didn't just give a blanket statement and write the game off because you didn't personally care for it. And that actually means a lot when it comes to reviewing.
I can absolutely see how this game isn't for everyone. I loved it, and I consider it to be one of the greatest games ever made (and no, I'm not joking). I felt the world that was crafted, the sense of loneliness, the barren lands to traverse, the puzzle like quality of navigating to and from with the least amount of hassle, the asymmetric world building (literally), and the fact that combat wasn't actually the hook of the game - it was just a fall-back for when you got in a situation.
My first playthrough, I rarely used a gun. And I do mean rarely. I usually just planned around everything. Then I got the cool Cuff-Link blade thing and started choppin' BTs like no ones business.
BUT. I can't say that there were moments where it did indeed feel a little plodding, which may be expected when the game is literally entirely about fetch quests.
Yes, this is a walking simulator, but as Tim Rogers said, it's the "Gran Turismo of walking simulators". So yeah, it's not gonna gel with everyone. I don't care for Soulsborne games. I'm not a big FPS guy. I try so hard to enjoy a lot of games, but most just fall flat.
    But this. This I liked.

This review actually got me to play the game and I had no intentions to. I’m into kinda dark drama scifi like the stuff Netflix churns out and this is the entire mood of the game. Like down to the production style. They nailed it and I’m enjoying it. Just under 5 hours in so far. It’s a chill exploration game with interesting lore and some light action down the line best I can tell. So far I’ve pieced together the babies represent the line between life and death and work as a portal / midway point between the two so they’re sensitive to the signal the aliens or whatever it is called put off. The invaders (I’m guessing multidimensional) feed off of living matter and that’s why the seeds sprout and go through death / humans experience aging / necrosis. Also I think it’s cool you can passively work with other players by leaving behind ways to get through obstacles. Keep up the great content, dude! 🤘🏻

Kojima has had his trademark weird, wild, somewhat thought-challenging and meta-breaking stories done before... in games that actually felt like really damn good games to play and kept you engaged to see what happened next in Kojima's weird mindspace. And at the end I saw my time and I thought, "Almost 50 hours? Damn that's pretty good."
The take aways is that fun is subjective to everyone and Kojima aimed for the game to be specific in its gameplay loop and mechanics. I found myself engaged in those mechanics enough to have fun but I understand if others don't.

Oh and the game does get more manageable over time, you can get better shoes as well as more ways to protect your packages, you can build roads, drive trucks, and make huge zipline networks. If you have more free time these days (everyone does) then I suggest revisiting the game, and taking your time with it. In the end you spent 10 hours on a game that can easily take up to and over 80+ hours for a competitionist (and that's if you rush it). You also seem to have treated the delivery aspect as an afterthought, when in fact you should think of it as the core of the game that every other aspect builds off of. Hell maybe you can appreciate the game and it's message more now that 2020 happened and the world became bricks. Oh and the 6 1/2 hour mark you talked about? That was actually the end of the tutorial area. xD
