Here comes the winner… that note he hits in the “sell them well” part is still so insane to me. Also I pray one day you read the lyrics that Jon writes, funniest shit when you read along. I think you’ll come around on mothership, the more you listen the better it gets.
Dude I totally agree. Dude’s almost got a female vocal register. Every song on this album has super deep lyrics tbh, aside from jon’s lyrics who’s lyrics are just mayhem but also super poetic. I’ve listened to this album start to finish countless times and I have concluded that it’s their best album to date for sure. But this is just my opinion; there’s not a single “eh” track on this album.
Before you internalize what I say in the outro. I'm probably going to make a video of me re-ranking the albums after listening to their discography for a little while. Think of this tier list as my first initial ranking of the albums (My initial thoughts).
Finally, man is like you read my mind lol Mothership highs are really high but not all the songs are of the same caliber. Their sound changed, not as heavy, clean and unclean taking turns etc. Artificial Selection continue the trend and imo is the weakest of the Tillian era. (Havent watch the video yet but reading the tittle I think you might think something similar) Acceptance Speech and Instant Gratification are so consistent and solid all the way through that I see how any song could be "the best song in the album". I think about Afterburner as a improve Artificial Selection since they double down with that style. It was the first album I listened to on release so I have a soft spot for it but man I really hope they dont continue in this direction. Synergy was amazing so Im hopeful.
DGD is a gem, one of the few bands that evolves for good record after record. When you think there cannot be anything better, the next album comes with new elements and combinations that are definitely unusual in regular music, which makes us enjoy all their music without fatigue. Also, when you give a second, or a third or even a million of listens to the songs, you always find something else that you hadn't heard in the past. Awesome. Will be nice to hear your thoughts from them in general after finishing their discography.
Every song on this album is such a musical masterpiece and it somehow brings this vast meaning to my life and my existence here. Love seeing you experience it
i feel the same way about the first three tillian albums.. maybe because i fell in love w the older dgd before tillian and a lot of the new dgd fans discovered them from this album. but i always liked acceptance speech and instant gratification > mothership.
I agree with you on this one not having as strong melodies as some of the other albums. As someone else pointed out, this album is a favorite for a lot of people, partly because it was the album that really got them more mainstream attention, so it was their introduction. People also really enjoy Tillian’s harsher vocals and mixing here, which I understand. May be a hot take, but I actually think Afterburner is their strongest work yet and has a good mix of everything that makes DGD great. It’s catchy, heavy, and weird as hell.
Afterburner is really strong, and i feel like it’s their largest leap in sound-change that they’ve done. Reeeeally solid album, but i think mothership is still number 1 for me. The guitar is so good, the vocals are insane, the melodies are so good and interesting and creative. Interesting structures throughout too. Just an amazing album.
I started to listen to DGD around when acceptance speech drop and I will still stand by say this still their best album to me with Afterburner a very close second.
I’ve been listening since instant gratification so idk if I have a say in this. But when I found them out I immediately checked out all their other music and fell in love. And then mothership was just amazing. Afterburner was if not equally amazing. But I guess the reason a lot of people don’t think it’s the best because Mothership sounds like Tilian is trying to keep up with the band and Afterburner sounds like the bad trying to cater to Tilian
Absolutely love mother ship and I've been listening since the start. But I will say I still think as a whole that DBM2 Is their best work. That album fits so well together when listening to it all at once. My favorite though is probably tied between DBM2 and Afterburner
been watching these since the first episode - really good content man. you're gonna love the rest of their discography. also FYI, his name is pronounced ti-lee-in, lol. other than that, you're killing it bro, love to see you loving DGD
3 years late, but if you want to hear more of Tillian's vocals that sound like this he came from a band called Tides of Man. Check out Empire Theory, IMO their best album.
It's such a pleasure watching you react to all these great albums! You are doing an awesome job. Very entertaining. Would love to see you react to Pathogen - Null Space. Best djenty deathcore album you will find out there and my personal AOTY 2020. Even 2021 :'D
Fun Fact: Kellin Quinn could’ve been DGD’s singer. After their ep and first album the first singer, Johnny Craig, started being himself for lack of a better term. Look up ‘Uneasy Hearts Weigh the Most Kellin Quinn’ and you can hear why as awesome as it is in raw sound I don’t think he would’ve fit.
Mothership fans you gotta stop hyping the shit outta this album before people hear it. Why would you set someone's expectations so high, rather than them having no expectations and just letting it hit them out of nowhere? The surprise is half the fun. Lots of fandoms have this problem.
@@2xRainb0w its an awesome album but people will be more receptive the *first time* when there arent such high expectations put on it right out the gate
If you like dance gavin dance. Dwellings is also a band you would like. Very similar to dance gavin dance and their album is something I come back to quite often.
Not controversial at ALL, mothership is the best Tilian album imo. I think it had the best ‘variation’ of songs, and I think it plays front to back suuuuper cohesively. Something they lose on afterburner and jackpot juicer imo.

This album is peak and just pure eargasm through and through.
Once you know the lyrics, it just changes things so hard.
Changes things so hard in a good or bad way?

Cocaine cringefest
Bro I've been sleeping on "Here Comes The Winner" for so long until now. The song is hitting me different now

You still planning on it?
Deception is still such a fucking experience. Might even be a top 3 song for me.
Nice!! In my opinion the most talented and consistent band in music for the last 20 years without question
this has to be one of my favorite albums of the last ten years
I have so many memories with this album. Came out my freshman year of highschool. Good times

You also have 2 Tree City Sessions where Tilian and the band go over old songs
Every song on this album is such a musical masterpiece and it somehow brings this vast meaning to my life and my existence here. Love seeing you experience it
philosopher king is probably my second favorite song behind man of the year for all of DGD... such an underrated song
i feel the same way about the first three tillian albums.. maybe because i fell in love w the older dgd before tillian and a lot of the new dgd fans discovered them from this album. but i always liked acceptance speech and instant gratification > mothership.
My favorite DGD album to this day. Every aspect of it just pushes the extra mile. It’s so hard to pick a favorite and I would have it no other way
This is awesome, seeing someone fall in love with DGD. They get better with every listen.
Here comes the winner and man of the year are so slept on

Mothership is their magnum opus. Afterburner is decent but I still think that this tops it. Instant Gratification is a pretty close second.
