    Hello theanti2007, Thank you for comment. And yes it's not really the type of radio for real bad weather usage. But, (1) I had almost all the materials in my radio stockpile to build it so I didn't spend much money at all. (2) It was a fun project to build. (3) And it works just fine for what I use it for. And yes, Your Codan is a far superior radio but at far higher cost. Thank you again and may the Great Creator bless you friend.

      Hello ThePauperPrepper, Thank you for the complement. It was fun to build as well as operate. I would say it would be too costly if you consider the time it took to fabricate. Plus it's fabricated around many scraps, I happen to have laying around. So, to gather all the materials to make another the same way, I would have to purchase many items to make the same thing over again.

    Hello Farley, Thank you for the complements on station...I have no static pics yet...I'll try to get some posted soon...the interface of headset is some what home brew...small piece of cat 8 cable to the back of 8 pin Yaesu mic connector mounted on aluminium plate...then 8 pin Yaesu mic jack and coiled cable to military PTT switch which plugs into headset...of course you have to figure out each pin on radio to match with headset.....

    I would LOVE to see more detail on the handset conversion. I'm looking to do a similar thing with an H/250 to adapt to my 857 as well as my Baofeng HT. I was thinking a 6 pin connector with the threaded barrel like is found on the older Yaesu and CB radios with one male in on the handset and female ends on separate connectors for the 857 and the Kenwood style two pin for the HT.
    What I'm finding in my research is that the mic in the handset is dynamic and therefore not really usable for these purposes as the volume would be greatly diminished.
    Make another vid for that handset and the Sordin headset conversions, PLEASE!!!
    Also, awesome manpack rig. It's a work of art!!!

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  9 років тому

      James Sherrill Hello James, All the wiring details are readily handy on the web for the H/250 handset. Look up " H/250 handset pin out " and you should find what you need. And yes the H/250 is a noise cancelling element so you have to close talk it,but it will work with the FT-857.. As for the sordin headset. I had to do a complete revamp on wiring and replace mic in boom with a eletret mic element and feeding it with 5 volts + off the Yaesu FT-857. It's not too hard, just took a little time to figure out a way to wire it all to a 8 pin adapter. You will need 7 of the pins to make all wires separate to the sordin headset.. 2 for PTT, 2 for speakers, 3 for eletret mic element. One of the 3 being the 5 volts + of course. I hope this helps my friend. Many blessings.

    • @jimshell6619
      @jimshell6619 9 років тому

      ***** So you have NOT found the volume levels to be too low sue to the dynamic mic and higher impedance speaker of the handset? That sounds like the confirmation that I needed. I'm gonna order one off eBay today!!!
      I've gotten a set of the Racal RA5000 vehicle high noise headsets and am playing with those of late. I can't wait to see how that all pans out but I'm anticipating rewiring that completely like you did with the Sordin.
      Thanks and 73's. KD8TQS

      James Sherrill Hi again James, The h/250-U handset I have seems to work fine with FT-857d. As far as other radio's, I'm not sure. And yes, the Sordin headset I have, I did a complete mic,wiring,PTT harness replacement to make it work with FT-857d. 73's and your welcome my friend...Bob...N1TZU.

    I probably would have used PVC instead of copper pipe. It would weigh less...unless you're using the frame as the ground for the whole thing. Thanks for the video. This looks like something you would've seen in Viet Nam. :)

      Thank you Sabatheus for your comments. And yes, I'm using the frame as part of the counter poise on some bands. The unit is not too bad in weight. It's about 37 lbs total. Most of the time when in use, it's on a table while camping.

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  9 років тому +1

      Hello Raymond, Thank you for the complements. As far as operating time. That all depends on how much power you run and how much you transmit. But, just to give you one of my latest adventures. Here in Maine we have a state park called Camden Hills where Mt.Batty is located. My wife and I did a late summer last of the season camping trip. While there I got up before the sun came up and hiked to the top with my station. I reached the summit when the sun was coming up about 6 am and set up and started operating about 6:15 am. I continued operating till about 11:00 am. My battery only dropped 2 volts and I was running an average power output level of about 60 to 70 watts. So not too bad. I would say if you ran a lower power level like 30 watts you could easily operate a good part of the day. Hope this answers your question. Have fun...73 and God bless my friend...N1TZU...Bob.

  • @hamrobert1469
    @hamrobert1469  11 років тому

    Hello Aaron, I can only make a guess.I used about10 feet of 1/2"copper and about12-1/2" copper tee's..4- 1/2" ninety's and 4-1/2" copper cap's for the feet...the rest was scrap stuff from my parts box's of screws-aluminium plate-one old antenna mount-one new one-old hiking pack straps-etc.etc. So,I would guess everything but the radio and tuner cost roughly-$ 700.00 But bare in mind there is a lithium ion battery and SGC vertical antenna that was the bulk of that cost.Hope this info help..Robert

    Hello again,
    I have a question about the headset adaption.. Does the Sordin have a low impedance dynamic mic..? If so, how did u get around the low transmit and receive volumes? Did I have to amplify the headset somehow?

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  10 років тому

      Hi mastershimself, I have found the Sordin does have a low impedance mic. So I only use it on single side band and use the audio processing features in my Yaesu FT-857d radio to over come the issue. The headphone speakers seem to work fine but do sound a little thin. But that no big deal. So, to answer your question. If you are going to use a Sordin headset on a radio without some kind of audio processor, you will need to either change the mic element to a 600 ohm element or figure out some way to amp it up to drive the audio circuit in the radio. I hope this helps and gives you some idea's.....

  • @mastershimself2620
    @mastershimself2620 10 років тому

    This is awesome man!! My question is regarding the ptt connection to the radio. Does your headset have the tp120 jack or is it a pin type? I read below your comments on how you wired the system,(8 pin from the PTT?) but i was wondering what ptt you are using? Nato Version? I was hoping to rig a similar system and currently have a srs tactical avenger headset, with a tp120 nato pin for ptt connection.. any info is greatly appreciated!!

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  10 років тому

      Hello mastershimself, My headset is the MSA Sordin type 75310 with the tp 120 pin type connector which plugs into a modified Nexus U94 PTT. I replaced the end that plugged into a HT motorola with a coil cable off an old hand mic with 8 pin Yaesu plug. If you look close at video you will see a home brew aluminium plate just to the left of FT 857d volume control that has a 8 pin female connector for headset and a military style connector for a H-250/U handset as well. I hope this helps you. 73's and may YHWH (God) bless you and yours. N1TZU...Bob.

    I have another question related towards your manpack
    Is the radio and tuner grounded to the frame assembly using short grounding wires between the frame and radio/tuner ground lugs?
    I have my manpack setup, a ICOM-7000, IT-100 tuner, Lithium battery and a alumium frame. Im getting what I believe is a lot of RF feedback through the radio. The screen flickes and bounces around when I attempt to tune to a specific antenna on HF. This is using 15% of the radio power and it blew the inline fuse between the battery and radio on the negative side. The radio and tuner is ground to the frame via the mounting bolts/screws but no ground wires as of yet. I will install these now and reevaluate.
    Any help to reduce what I believe is RF into the rig would be greatly appreciated.
    Antenna is a MFJ-1979 vertical extendable antenna.
    Thanks,Ray

      Hello Ray, My radio and tuner are only grounded to frame via mounting bolts with no RF feedback problem. But also bear in mind my vertical antenna is a $300.00 helical wound 9' whip that can some what tune from 5.0 megs to 30.0 megs. The antenna may be your problem. If your trying to tune an antenna that is way to short for the frequency than that may cause a lot of RF feedback. Also the mic cord could be picking up that RF. Try setting up a temporary wire antenna close to the frequency you want to transmit on and see if you still have the issue. Hope this helps..73 and God bless...N1TZU...Bob

    Bob, I am curious which SGC antenna you use and if the so to see Diamond K550 mount is strong enough to support antenna and spring? Thanks from PE1RNL

      @hamrobert1469  9 років тому +1

      dolphinsdaydreams Hello Kees, The SGC is the 303 model. It screws into the threads on the mount as you can see. I did have to beef up the mount a bit though.... but, I'm no longer using that frame design set up. I completely rebuilt the manpack to a new box style manpack. There should be a link to a new video of the new setup on this video. Hope this helps and God bless and 73's.....Bob....N1TZU.

      Sorry Nikko, I do not. This was all built on the fly and in my head. Also, I don't have this frame any more. I built a new version which I also have a nother video of here ua-cam.com/video/419ago_Rtow/v-deo.html You may want to see this version before you start fabricating. Many blessings to you and yours.

    I am also using FT - 857.

    Please tell me the circuit diagram.

      Hello OCTOPUS ARMS, The handset is actually off an old military telephone set. The plug has six pins. But I'm only using 5 pin for handset. You can do a google search and find pictures of the pin out for this handset. Check here as well- www.nf6x.net/2007/05/antrc-179-regency-net-hfssb-transmitterreceiver/ Then match up the wiring to your radio audio input. Hope this helps you out. Many blessings to you and yours.

      I thought that looking at your MANPACK was very wonderful.
      It is difficult to obtain parts of the US military in Japan, but I think I will make it.
      I would like to have a conversation with you by radio waves.
      P.S. I'm sorry for bad english.

    Hello again,
    Im working on a schematic that mirrors your headset/handset setup.. I am using a cobra with a 4 pin mic. If possible, I plan to mid the u94 with a cobra coil mic wire...as far as the h250u handset, where can I get a set of female male connections? Or what is the specific name and type so I can search!! Thanks Sir..

      Hello again mastershimself, If you have the hand and headset that have the u-229/u connector .I believe you need the U-183/U 5 pin bulkhead connector. Search army surplus stores on line and you may find someone that has them. Have fun fabricating.

      Hello friend, yes it is a short wave ham radio. The Yaesu FT-857d. It cover from 160 meter through the 70 center meter's band's. Great radio, because it is small and works very well for portable use. Many blessing's to you and yours. Robert.

    what kind of distortion makes voices sound like that?

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Con, that's what is called the SSB mode. ( Single side band mode ). When using a radio in the old AM mode, there is the fundamental frequency that your transmitter is making, say let's pick 3.885 mhz. Well, when the transmitter is switched to SSB mode. Your now only using either the upper half and or lower half of the transmission. So receiver tuning is critical to make the voice sound normal or natural.

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  9 років тому

      Michael Zehrfeld Hello Michael, In the video I didn't have the counterpoise deployed because I was just receiving. But, when I transmit the fishing reel mounted on the side has like a thin wire type rope that allows me to string out what is needed for any particular band. Thanks for viewing and God bless...73's...N1TZU....Bob.

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  10 років тому +1

      Hello Scorpio Taurus, If you look closely to the left of FT-857 there is a plate with the mating connector for the 250 hand set and also a 8 pin connector for head set use as well.. I have a short cat cable wired to both, and going into radio mic input and wire to speaker out put. You just need to figure out the corresponding connections hand and headset. I hope this helps. Robert.

    Whats the batterytime on this manpack?

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  8 років тому

      +Cryptosporidium ....Hello friend, The battery time all depends on how you use your radio. TX time vs RX usage. If I'm just listening (RX) only the battery will run roughly 12 hours. On (TX) that time will vary on how much I TX and how much power I run. Hope this helps. Many blessings to you and yours...73's....Bob

    • @19leon73
      @19leon73 8 років тому

      +Ham R. it helps a little, if I buy the 857 I probably will buy two 10000 mAh LIPOs just to make sure I can get some radio time.

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  8 років тому

      Cryptosporidium What I would recommend doing is, when running portable on battery, I try to run no more than 25 watts on transmit. The battery does quite well at that level. :-)

    Why does everyone sound like a robot?

    • @hamrobert1469
      @hamrobert1469  9 років тому

      It's part of what single side band sounds like if the radio is not tuned to the exact frequency the other person is transmitting on. I hope this helps to explain the reason for the robot sound.
