  • Its been a while since I have had a good play with an FT897D and it still proves to be a great radio. I have always loved the portable application this radio was designed for but it proves to be a great shack radio as well. They are a great value radio at around $800 Aud (approx secondhand) being that they cover HF, 6m, 2m and 70cm. Grab one if you can, it's a lot of radio for very little $$$. Cheers brenton vk3cm jdw229 pls subscribe and also feel free to join us on Facebook at Aussie Radio Pickers or vk ham sales and service anytime

I like my 897D. It's build like a tank and I struggle to think of any rig that is as versatile, even today. Inside, the chassis is massive and acts as a giant heat sink. Good for high duty cycle modes, can be used base, portable or mobile. Covers HF, 6m, 2m, 70cm with 100W on HF, 50W VHF and 25W 70cm - a real Swiss army knife. Fitting the optional mechanical filters for SSB/CW makes a big difference. Especially on CW, the narrow filter makes it a very nice CW receiver on HF.

My first radio was and still is, the mighty FT897D, built to last.

The D model came with the MH-31A8J hand mic. Great video Brenton. I always liked the look of this rig. 73 Joe

On my tuner antenna is the top. I just had to turn radio round to check. But my label is also on the bottom

I now have the FT-891. I'll be still working out the functions on Christmas Day!! LOL!! I also have the ATAS-120A antenna.

Re the fine vs coarse tuning, there is also a hidden function of the purple power button, with a quick depress enabling or disabling fast or fine tuning on the fly, so 100hz or 10hz increments on the tuning dial

So wish my FT817 and FT818 had that feature

On my 817 and 897, I use the feature Brenton demonstrated - turning the SEL knob which allows you to quickly move up/down the band. The step size depends on which mode you are on. You can change step sizes in the menu. For example, in SSB mode you can set the step size to 1KHz, 2.5KHz or 5KHz. Another trick, is momentarily pressing the SEL knob then turning the SEL knob, the frequency changes in 1MHz steps. Both handy features on 897 and 817 that are easy to forget. (I suspect same applies on 857 or 818).

DX Engineering says the following about the FC-30 auto tuner. Has this limited you or anyone else in using certain antennae? “On the HF and 50 MHz bands the impedance matching range is from 16.5Ù to 150Ù (up to 3:1 SWR). Accordingly, the FC-30 should not be expected to match "long wire" type antennas unless you have taken specific design steps to ensure that the impedance presented to the FC-30 is within these specifications.”

I recently purchased a Yaesu ft 897 not d but with internal battery and Yaesu charger which works great but radio definitely picks up more noise than my Yaesu ft 950
I’m hoping next year will give me the chance to try it out portable 73 2e0nbk

The viewer would have seen the radio screen better if you had chosen a different colour than blue for this demonstration. Orange might have been better.

Like my 897d its only weakness is the mic input socket does not give good mechanical contact on any mic but getting someone to service it is a problem. So it sits almost un used more the pity.
