Just finished replacing the 3x 455 IF filters, what a Pain in the Axis! I still love this little wonder, especially with a Bluetooth CAT interface and a Raspberry PI as audio-driver. And an ATAS-120 for /P operations! Thanks for the video Tony!
Nice rigs! You have done some good research on the versions! I have had a 857D since around 2006, and other than having to replace a faulty ceramic filter, it has been an amazing radio. I still can't believe that a replacement for this radio, in this kind of form factor, is still not available to this day... (That is ALL MODE and "DC to Daylight"). 😉👍
@@TonyAlbus awesome Tony your videos are amazing for us electronic geeks.. I had the radio now to use for few months paired with atas 120A .. i don't think you can have such a better radio setup for the car. 80 meters the only band wont match well. but the rest of bands flat swr and with 50 to 80 watts .. This radio made contacts world wide..
As always: nice video, but...... I'm not sure, but are you using the right screwdriver? Much of the equipment from Japan does not use Philips or Pozidriv screws, but JIS (Japan Industrial Standards). The screw can be recognized by a small hole on the head of the screw. Don't kill your screws. :-)
I have the original 857, love it! I was going to mount it in my car but after hearing about the issue with the LCD GOING BAD SITTING IN A HOT CAR. I watched an earlier video about an external display and I remember that George from Amature Logic UA-cam channel did a "home build" external display for these radios. They do have a wiki page listing shows and what the shows topic is. I will check my radio to see if the connector and switch is in my version. If so, any idea if Yaesu still offers the board?
Hi, a great radio. Yes i did a video an a cheaper external display :ua-cam.com/video/ZABdHzgIO_A/v-deo.html in the links of this video you also find a link to AliExpress for a replacement display. But if you can spend a bit more have a look at CatMeters.com .. Enjoy! 73 Tony
You find sometimes on ebay a secondhand unit, but crazy pricing, not worth it in my opinion as this early DSP more hurt your ears listening a long time then actualy improves. i found that without its a lot softer for the ears and its then a great radio to listing long time.
When I bought the original 857 I got a free DSP unit with it. I just recently acquired a 857D for a great price because of the zebra striped display. Already have an Arduino based external display running and have been able to get a lot of the missing display lines back so it is pretty readable.
Hey man, I need help. W5WPS here. Yaesu 857d. I cannot listen to general FM broadcasts anymore, local radio. The mode it says is WFM. I cannot change the mode to fm. The manual doesn’t have WFM as one of the modes. The mode button works on all other freg. Help.
Hi, WFM is good for commercial radio, no problem there. but if you think is was different before, disconnect from you PC if you have it connected, if not, do a factory reset and try again.
in some point in time Yaesu changed the UHF preamp. the one shown has 3 UHF Helix filters. in my unit these filters are missing and the 2 HF preamp filters have variable frequency tuning by diodes.
Thanks for sharing that, yes the FT-100 is a great radio too, i have a video of that one too on this channel. thinking of buying the ATAS-120A some time. can't have a big vertical in this house. good to know it works well for you
Nice video Tony. I have one of the D models in mobile since 2010 or so and still love it. It has had the filter problem, the stripes problem; and now only minro issue is that the VFO sometimes jumps when dialing in the last digits- so seems like the encoder for the wheel is losing sensitivity. So minor that I've not bothered to even look at it. These are good radios. with a long run. Sure wish there was a functional in form factor replacement. Will keep mine until it dies. 73 OM and thanks for sharing your insights.
More or less yes...but the later revisions have improvements in the front-end and endstage.. that you will not have.. but you will have a nice working DSP radio for sure.
Someone here in my area is selling his at a reasonable price with the box and all its accessories, it is tempting but, if the zebra stripes occur later on, I will just be frustrated. Money is not easy to come by in my situation. Thank you so much anyway for sharing this video. 73 and all the best.
Hi, yes the Sebras can come, but does not have to be. i heared recently that it happened with temprature changes, so when you have it in a car. So in a home, it good stay good. Just keep in mind the radio itself is also old. so other things can happen too. caps, filters etc. if you don't need the power you can also look for a 2nd hand 817 818 or with more power and money for a 991/991A
Keep your 857 in a cool dry place and expecially out-of-the-sun! I've had mine nearly 20 years. It runs fine. Back the power off to 80 watts. Don't push the output.

Very informative Tony and as always you are so good at bringing a sparkle to these older radio's.

Are the optional DSP boards still available in 2024? Aftermarket units?

There are some crystal filters within the radio that may have failed. They are still available from Yaesu
in some point in time Yaesu changed the UHF preamp. the one shown has 3 UHF Helix filters. in my unit these filters are missing and the 2 HF preamp filters have variable frequency tuning by diodes.
Thanks, nice to know.
Thanks. I HAVE been tempted by a 991 rather than an IC-905. I want all band, all mode. Good to know,
Both have that cool Spectrumscope.. but the 991A has also 100Watts on HF
That' the thing. I only do QRP, even on VHF/UHF/ I use a KX3 now.@@TonyAlbus

If you have a NON-D model but add the DSP board & do the mars mod is it functionally speaking the same as a D model?
More or less yes...but the later revisions have improvements in the front-end and endstage.. that you will not have.. but you will have a nice working DSP radio for sure.
