    6010 and 7010 downhill has been the traditional way of welding pipe under API 1104 for many years.
    But higher strength pipe is being used now that requires low hydrogen electrodes to be used for root, fill, and cap passes.
    7016 is a low hydrogen electrode and is similar to 7018 but has less iron powder which makes it slightly easier for open root welds.
    In this video, my friend Andrew Cardin shows his technique and settings for welding an open root using 7016 low hydrogen rod.

    Hey Jody this takes me back to being a young welder back in the early 70,s, this was a procedure that I cut my teeth on, it was very common in the oil industry when I worked in the rig yards here in Scotland building jackets and deck modules for the North Sea, it was so good to see a young man using the same technique and discipline that I used for about 20+ years! coming now to the end of my career after nearly 50 years welding mainly in the oil, gas and nuclear industries I thought this technique was dead and gone so it was good to see it’s coming back as a “new” procedure!! This is why your channel is easily the best on UA-cam you cover everything!

      Weaver Cattle Company the E7016 over here in the UK is still a relatively cheap rod and it’s probably the “go to” rod here for most serious hobbyists, in industry here now speed is also the priority with most manufacturers preferring to use dual shield Mig or where size allows, bare wire Mig for rooting followed by dual shield Mig for hot pass and maybe two or three fillers followed by sub-arc using 3.25 or 4mm SD3 or SD3 .5 moly, material dependent, for heavy deposition. I remember in the 70’s working on ball valves for the Siberian pipeline and we rooted downhill or stoveing as we called it using fleetweld 5’s. Guess times have changed and nowadays money is king! Thanks for the comment it was very interesting to read.

      I worked in all the Scottish rig yards numerous times, always 6G or 6GR tests and sometimes you had to do both. Kishorn yard I had 6G and 6GR in stick, Inner shiled and dual shield which was 20p per hour per coding and it mounted up to a good amount of money back in the day as we were doing 7 twelve hour shifts. The coding money alone equalled what some people got for a wage.

    Hi,
    Thats the position I usually use when doing repairs on my steel boat, when standing on the ground welding up...... I often use a 6010 root with negative on the stinger, and then the 7018-1 on top with positive electrode. I believe this gives a bit more elastic weld needed . Thanks for your time teaching us to make these experiments .... sometimes we get it right big smile :-)

There is more than enough time on test day so don’t rush it and try not to long arc as porosity is a bitch to repair. Sing out if you want to use my numbers “amp settings”etc. doing 3E first really set me up for the pipe tests as you will be all over the electrode control

You can run the 2.5 as low as 55amp and 3.2 90amps no sweat . Go dcen 68-75 amp and listen to the noise coming out the back of the plate and just apply a little pressure . You will love them on a side note restarting can be a pain but just pinch the end of the rod . I like the orlinkeon ones

      L. P. I completed my structural plate and pipe tickets recently here in oz and we used kobelco electrodes for the tests. the mysterious porosity I found was caused by long arcing especially on stop/starts. We only use WIA 16tc electrodes at work which I find to be a lot easier to use. It’s great to see some controlled hydrogen electrode open root welding as over here we don’t use 6010 often if ever and always weld uphill.

      yeah, that been bugging me too. so I googled it and a forum they said something about some put a pig in it. I think that would be a remote controlled kind of thing but I don't know. but I would also think you would not want slag in a fuel or oil pipeline when it's in use. as another response on that forum was that it gets filtered out later.

    • @bishipc117
      @bishipc117 5 років тому

    • @jamier6742
      @jamier6742 5 років тому

      Biship c Has a lot to do with what application the pipe is being used for and what code and or specification the job applies to. Best case is to tig weld the root and hot pass. I understand you’re talking about being out on the field but it just usually boils down to application and code Requirements.

    • @jamier6742
      @jamier6742 5 років тому

      highkicker11 A big reason why they don’t want slag left from a root pass is because in time it will break down and mess up components downstream.

(With the pipe being 10"-16" long) Alot of force is usually applied on these joints in a rocking motion and we are reconsidering the patterns and settings to use on this kind of joint. We only weld all the way around the outside of the pipe to the perpindicular, "blinding" flatbar. Do you have any suggestions for this kind of weld/situation?

    Can you tell how to restart with out feathering it in. My teacher won't let me use a grinder?

    • @MRTYREMULISHA
      @MRTYREMULISHA 5 років тому +1

      use a file or a slag rack aka old power hacksaw blade to feather your stops and starts, if he dose not let you feather lo hydrogen stops and starts you may want to go to a different school.
      if your using 6010 or 8010 then thats achievable buy leaving a slight key hole when you stop.

      If you're doing lowhy roots and your "teacher" wont let you feather stop/starts, ... then youd be better off finding a better person to learn from, as your "teacher" doesnt know what theyre doing

      It took me two go's to pass but the first one i busted was a defect in the cap pass on the 5g.

      Just need enough voltage to hold a real tight short arc, literally short enough for the flux on the rod to be scuffing the preps

      Jorge Perez naaaaah, way to slow, and not “as good”. Some bone head 23 yr old engineer will try, again, to implement this in-service procedure to mainline welding and fail,again. Have been taking this test for 12 yrs now and have only used it for live work. One company started to mainline with it, but came to senses at the “meeting of the minds “ that’s what 0% field experience gets us nowadays

    • @kf8575
      @kf8575 3 роки тому

      No need for lowHy roots on pipelines, they're only standard wall low pressure, doesnt warrant high spec welds like lowHy or tig root.
      This is more for heavywall, high pressure, or butts under constraint
