I just want to say, I came here for the woodworking, I wasn't expecting such a wonderfully curated playlist as well. Awesome video, you have a new subscriber!
@@Woodumakeit I felt the same way... wonderful woodworking video but pleasantly surprised to find such a wonder playlist of music as well. New subscriber here as well. :)
This is amazing work. You clearly put a lot of effort into everything even the pieces we can barely see for structural integrity. It was cool to see how a fully functional shop and master craftsman can make magic together!
@@michaelhill8441 its very possible to have 2 or more queens of the same color on the board at the same time. if your pawn reaches the other side, you can choose to promote it to another piece, and most ppl choose a queen.
Wow.....Martin better be playing with that board every freaking day! The fact that you made this look so simple to do is, in my opinion, a testament to your skill. Phenomenal board!
It's clear to me that they're a genius's in every facet of life and not just people that work in theoretical physics or top chess players. This man is one of them and I have much respect for this talent that I could not ever do this well.
Normally the minimalist style sets are awful looking but you made some beautiful pieces, and how you handled the design is original as far as I know. Nice done.
I jolted forward in my seat at 32.53 when that notch almost got cut slightly off-angle, but then you paused and I realized I was wrong to ever doubt. Beautiful, highly-skilled work and a pleasure to watch.
@@jimpike3489 It actually took me 3 months to make this and all the chess pieces with a whole bunch of other projects going on at the same time. I have lots more videos to come if I can find time to edit them. Stay tuned!
If you had spaced the chess piece inserts differently, there might have been room in one of the drawers for a chess clock. I would have also felted the inserts to protect the pieces. I tried turning a few chessmen some time back. I did a more Staunton style design. The base for the Knights was turned, the horse heads were cut out on a scroll saw from cubes of wood. Two cuts were made to release the profile, and then the two slices of wood that had been removed were put back into place with double sided scotch tape, the cube turned 90 degrees, and the next two slices were removed. What was left was then the horse head, and it was fine carved with Dremel rotor tools.
Oh absolutely ill make it after I place my bass guitar together . You had a wonderful idea for rounding out the edges for the chess piece rack in the drawer . Some times wonderful ideas come from mistakes . I'm going to do the same for my drawer . Bravo 👏
What an elegant classic project. I loved your video and I'll use that pro tip about the shellac before epoxy so it doesn't bleed into the wood until the day I die. Great quality videos like this makes a hard year a little bit easier to handle. Thank you.
Going to be making a board for my brother in law and will pattern it after yours. I may not do the drawers but the top is awesome and will compliment the family heirloom pieces he has. Thanks for a very well done video.
Really nice! I’m in the midst of a similar project for my son. I have trays for the pieces that can be pulled out of the drawers, and I’ve experimented with felt for the board to rest in, and fabric to make padded spots for the pieces. Lots of labor and you make it look easy. I’ve taken the same order of operations - and I’m at the stage of making the box and drawers.
Definitely a lot of labor. You're right about that. I just took it slowly and everything came out well. Not easy, but patience goes a long way toward making it doable.
I made a nice chessboard in jr. high. Was coming out pretty good. Until I ran it through the planer. Spent the next month or two sanding it down to compensate foe the chips that were ripped out by the planer. Not so sure I'd use the planer again after glue up. 50 years ago and I still remember how much it sucked but I had to just keep going with it until I finished it. Life lesson right there.
Most certainly gorgeous craftsmanship. Wood love to make it. Ahh maybe someday after I get thru all these Christmas presents and the endless amount of shop improvements. Haha
UA-cam algorythm makes me watch 45 minutes of woodcrafting... Nice job.

Can't believe you suggest skipping over the chessboard, we are all here to see these artistic pieces come together!

I would always recommend making an extra Queen for both sides. looks amazing!

Flip the rook.
Why is that?
