Would love to see a remake of JM’s bench videos. I’ve only see clips but they were packed full of knowledge and the man has a way of communicating ideas that is top notch. Thanks for all the great content!!!!
elitefts I used this video during my next deadlift workout. Adding these cues helped a lot. Oddly enough it also reminded to get the big belly inhale so that I could brace against the belt better.
I could watch Swede coach all day...simple, effective, informative. I'd love to see him do a series of these for all three lifts. It would be really cool to have other team members, both raw and equipped, do these as a series to show the differences and similarities in cues and coaching styles. I love learning from many and consolidating that information to find what cues and corrections work for me. EliteFTS has plethora of amazing coaches and athletes that, having read many of their articles, i would love to watch them do live coaching demonstrations. That and i just love listening to coaches like Swede talk shop and work their craft.
I like how people are commenting as if they know more than Swede does. P.s. this is one of the best instructional videos on deads that I've ever seen and I think It'll help me tremendously.
Why could people not know more than Swede, or about the same amount? I've been doing DL for years. I pull one rep max of 200 kg DL which is 2.65 my bodyweight of 75 kg. I do 5 sets of 10 reps pulling 150 kg. I don't compete in this. It's a hobby. The best instructions on how to do a deadlift I've got off of Mark Rippetoe Starting Strength. He gives you 5 easy cues on how to DL. I know how to DL so plz... zip it snot!
@@vikingstrongman5903 Not really the point, was it!? And besides a very childish comment. DL is a simple lift. You need a few cues to get going to avoid injuring yourself and getting and idea of what the lift is about, and then it's the time under the bar (in this case; over the bar) that matters. If you're not a halfwit you'll figure out what works best for you by doing the lift and progressively overloading the bar. Within a few years practicing the DL you will be really good at it and can lift heavy weights with great form. If you believe that people like this don't exist you really need to check yourself. You're in the dark buddy!
@@jaghad Wow. If you want to throw out numbers - I'm also a 75kg lifter and (in competition) have done up to 232.5kg deadlift. So, I must know more than you? I don't totally agree with everything Swede says, but he does have very good and helpful points here, far more than I've ever seen from Rippetoe.
jaghad DL is not a simple lift. Anyone who hasn’t done it will not understand any of the mind to muscle connection you get for cues. When I was 140lbs and only running, I couldn’t just do it with ease. None of my muscles were engaging no matter how hard I tried. A year and a half later it’s much better, but no way in hell I was going to get it without an actual person helping me.
Fist meet I ever did was in PA about 30 min from keyhole It was around 2011/2012 Swede was there dressed like a biker with some other massive dude coaching some kid That was the first time I had ever seen somebody in person and said to my myself WTF About 8 years have passed and while Swede has downsized a bit. Still a monster , and from what I remember is a good bit healthier too . Dude has hands like frying pans hahaha
Swede reminds me a lot of Dan Green. They seem similar to me. Swede also seems like the kind of coach you almost can't piss off lol. Lastly, this guy he's coaching is like 13 years old and 45 at the same time.
I’ve learned more in the first 9 minutes than all these other videos. He actually goes through every portion and it helps that someone actually had a bad deadlift. Lots of cues and can be overwhelming. Credit to him for that.
Good tuition here. Simple cues are the best. Most useful one I ever got with deadlifts was “push the floor away” - as if the bar never moves. I had hurt my back so many times trying to ‘lift the bar off the floor’, and for a long time I hated deadlifts. But once you’ve established correct tension and there is no slack in the bar, there is no ‘lifting’ involved. Your hips are a swivel. You drive those glutes to push the floor away. This is basically the same as ‘glutes to bar’ or ‘bar to glutes’ but in any case, you visualise the bar not moving. It was super helpful for me. Haven’t had an injury since.
Swede is such a good voice to have on the team. Thank you so much for every piece of content you have him in. Keep it up, y'all! P.S. - Could we get a 3 or 6 month max effort update from Tim? I wanna see him treat 315 like a warmup.
I would pay a lot of money to sit down with anyone at EliteFTS for an hour but I think Swede would be my first choice. Calm, concise, puts information in an easy way to understand and he just seems like a cool dude haha. LOVE LOVE LOVE this video
Watched this video this morning and got to try packing the scraps, bar to glutes and glutes to bar. Pulled 395 like it was 315. More videos with Swede would be awesome. BTW, your dead is looking awesome now.
Wow. Never thought of the lat pull over along with the glute drive before. Already deadlifted today hopefully I can remember that cue next deadlift day to see if it helps anything for me
This is the best deadlift video I've ever seen. I deadlift withthe proper form like Swede was describing but I find it hard to articulate to others how to get into a proper stance and initiate movement. I know powerlifters with huge deadlifts that still execute the lift with improper technique (getting the weight off the floor at all costs but compromising form and failing at lockout). I'm gonna send them this video. I can't speak for sumo deadlift because I don't know much about it, but in a conventional stance the hardest part of the lift should ALWAYS be off the floor, once your just a couple of inches up, it's all glutes and becomes "easy".
I am very sure I have seen ans studies this video at least 6 to 7 times and I seem to learn something each time. I will be deadlidting tomorrow and I am looking forward to using these cues
Tim!! Good to see you in a video buddy! I know everyone was giving him shit but Tim is a good dude and fellow bowling green alum but damn brother your DL needed some work :) I'm kidding you know I love ya! Could listen to Swede teach all day between him and JM the more the better on this channel.
This is the best tutorial on deadlift that I've seen yet. Swede has a really good approach to explaining the deadlift. Great ques and his has an ability to explain the small details of the the lift with out making you feel overwhelmed with shit you can't remember. I wish I had had a coach like this when I was a young lifter. It would have saved a lot of time and bad habits that later on had to be fixed.
I want an elitefts in my village. With the same kind of people. I like that hardcore vibe. Thanks for this vid guys, both the trainer for explaining and the student for asking questions and setting your ego aside.
I tried making the bar float on warmups prior to pulling hard and it actually made the work sets feel so much better. I felt like I finally understood how to use a deadlift bar. Thanks for this.
I bumped into Swede at his RPS meet he hosted in Pittsburgh in September and he’s such a cool guy. I was focused about my next attempt and too nervous to talk to him. I get so star struck. I was the same way with Stan Efferding😂
Finally a simple technique explanation.. those others at the gym make me shake my head with shame at the improper techniques they use daily. THen complain of how they stupidly popped something...etc. How about better chest work? Fly's? presses?
I love Dave Tate's information. But wow way to break it down. I need to get back into this since my back surgery put rods and pins into my back because of bad form. Thank you for this.
@@vikingstrongman5903 What had originally happened, I was feeling good, finally increasing my weight to pull 535 off the floor. I thought my form was good, got it past my knees to a lockout and then I sneezed, and then I heard a loud pop. Didn't think anything of it and went on my day. Finally got home relaxed a bit and then couldn't move. My son and wife took me to the emergency room and that is when they said I need surgery now.
Yeah the heavier the weights you lift, the more the antagonist muscle group gets involved. The other reason it's good to switch up your movements, is simply for your joints to have a chance to recover. That's why it makes sense to work on specific lifts more than others, to really get them up. I feel like a lot of people (myself included) in the beginning try to focus on too many big movements.
Who the f**k is Swede, never heard of him before maybe I've been under a rock but he's knowledgeable af. This man is legit. I'd literally watch him coach for hours.

Am I the only one that’s a bit unsure of the “drop and pop” cue? I like to straighten my legs and get the big breath in but after that, pulling the scaps down, hips down, slack out of the bar and push the floor away. The drop and pop seemed to lead to a loss of control for this guy and a real violent start to the pull. I used to pull like that but these days, if the strength is there then you can do it under control. Jerking like that into the lift just seems like a recipe for some bad times as the weights get heavier. Other than that, loads of good tips on here and a really good watch
