  • Dr. Patek received her A.B. with honors in Biology from Harvard University followed by a Ph.D. in Biology from Duke University. She was then awarded a Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship at UC Berkeley. She has received several honors, including the George A. Bartholomew Award for distinguished contributions to comparative physiology, a Radcliffe Fellowship, a NSF CAREER award, and the Brilliant 10 award from Popular Science magazine. Dr. Patek’s research examines the dynamic interplay between evolutionary processes and basic physics, including communication in the sea by the spiny lobsters and fast animal movements of the mantis shrimp. Her evolutionary experiments give us innovative insights into human-designed and engineered systems; this innovative potential is often called “biomimicry” or “biomimetic design”. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society and others. Dr. Patek is a former TED speaker (“The shrimp with a kick!”).
