That's exactly what we do when we are learning our mother tongue. 2. Importance: Make the target language important. The best way to do that is choosing the target language to do some important daily activities inspite of using your native language. 3. Matyáš thank you for sharing your brilliant approach to hearing, speaking, comprehending a foreign language! I have a bachelors in Spanish which isn’t saying much considering it took me three years to master phonetics, dialects, sentence structure, verb conjugation, along with the potential 13 different ways you can conjugate a specific verb. I think it is the simplest language for me to learn because it possesses what I call pure vowels. I am a classically trained vocalist and yet I was trained primarily in my native tongue, English. Whatever choir I was in we always had a 3 to 5 minute vocal warm-up. We would sing five specific vowel sounds at a specific pitch. Naturally these vowel sounds are the American phonetic spellings: eh, ee, ah, oh, oo. Those are the same vowel Sounds that are found in Spanish and Latin. As time went on I became very attracted to singing popular radio songs in Spanish and Latin. But I never mastered speaking and responding quickly until I was placed in a foreign country; Costa Rica. And at the end of my bachelors I lived and studied Costa Rica for 11 straight weeks, four hours a day. The professor told us she would send us home if she caught us speaking in English after a third warning. My Costa Rican host family, thank God, spoke no English whatsoever. So nearly 6 hours to 8 hours a day I was never around anyone to speak English to. Had I not done this Full immersion, my bachelor degree in Spanish would’ve been worthless.
So true message. There’s no shortcut to it but if your love for a language big enough to get yourself feel like immersing with other language-related things, journey to fluency will be very soon to happen.

Very good points esspecially the last one, in the beginning of language learning I wasted many hours cramming and studying vocabulary with no comprehension and meaning. It was a stressful and slow way to learn. On my third language now it's a lot smoother knowing how language works. Best way to learn is with lots of CONTEXT and OBSERVATION. Like babies 😇
I'm made a great progress of learning the English language. My motivation read about it programing language and then after 1 year. I'm not Fluent but I can read a lot and my understanding the English speakers was improved.
Many people tell me that it's need to hear a video first in my mother tongue, and after in english with subtitles in my mother tongue en them so after to watch in english. But I have no pacience, I just watch in english. I don't understand a lot of words but I've do this for two months and now my unsderstanding is much better. I just need to improve my writing and my speaking too. My goal for this year is to be fluent!
That will depend on the listener really. As a native English speaker I found the speed he talked to be fine but as someone that lives in a non English speaking country I understand the issue perfectly and struggle to understand native speakers when they speak fast sometimes. Also he was probably both working to a time limit for the talk so trying to make sure he finished in time plus likely had some nerves that made him talk faster.
@@PAnon2024 Totally with your point, I wish I could find a friend to practice english, I am complety sure everything you want to be can be reached through practicing
I am currently learning english and i wish becoming a native speaker one day. And what he presented here has shown me the importance of learning a language that we are enjoying and being unafraid of making mistakes . Indeed we tend to neglect this aspect but it's very important to do something you like doing. An amazing speech. I am looking forward to watch another ted talks talking about the process of learning languages
Although I am not a native English speaker, I l learned English, still having been keeping studying it, to be able to use English as a tool at last and get some progress by “PUSHING MYSELF”!!!!!!!
Yes there is a "superway" to learn languages, TO BEGIN, learn the mechanics, and then learn how to give and ask about the identities of objects and people. Keep the communication short and sweet. While that will not give you command over the totality of the language, you WILL be speaking it.
What I do to practice English is watch videos that I am interested in. I try to learn something new beyond the English language. The more I learn the more interested I become in the language. It is not as easy as it sounds because we have many distractors and occupations, however, I still think a language is not all about phonetics and grammar but culture, friends, and fun. The World is too big to be static, let´s dream about getting to know the unknown.
I live in Finland, and I have Vietnamese girlfriend and I am moving to live and work in Vietnam in the future, this is a great motivator to learn. Travelling there few times, connecting and spending time with local people helps a lot also. I use duolingo for this. It is structured very well and makes learning easy. I tried all kind of internet sites first, but most of them are pretty bad and lacks good structure and progression. In Duolingo they have managed to make very good progressing system, which actually works and you don't lose motivation easily, and I have made massive improvements during the last year. I have about 2 years before I move there and I am confident I can speak pretty fluent Vietnamese at that time.
I am Vietnamese and I really admire you for your Vietnamese learning process. Vietnamese is one of the most difficult languages, so it is too complex to learn
What a simple and fantastic model presented by Matyáš Pilin! I couldn't agree more. It's interesting how the idea of finding the "parent speaker" as a source of meaningful input, provider of feedback and somebody allowing you to test your hypotheses about what might be correct (or not) is actually similar to the way children ACQUIRE (rather than LEARN) languages. I also believe that risk-taking while learning a new language is mostly productive (the accompanying anxiety is often of the facilitating type).
Summary: -Last summer, the speaker faced a challenge while alone in Tallin, Estonia when they were confronted with the phrase "Tere tulemast" and other Estonian phrases. -The speaker had no previous experience with the Estonian language and had to learn quickly in order to communicate with locals. -The speaker attended a talk by a polyglot about how to learn a language quickly and effectively. -The polyglot emphasized that there is no one "super method" for learning a language and that it is important to find a personal approach that works for the individual learner. -The speaker will be presenting four key points that are essential to the learning of any language. -These four points are motivation, dedication, immersion, and consistency. -Motivation is important because it drives the learner to continue pursuing their goal of learning the language. -Dedication means being committed to putting in the time and effort to learn the language. -Immersion involves surrounding oneself with the language as much as possible in order to fully immerse oneself in the learning process. -Consistency means making a regular effort to practice and learn the language on a consistent basis. -The speaker suggests finding a language exchange partner or joining a language learning community in order to practice speaking and listening skills. -Reading and listening to authentic materials, such as news articles or TV shows, can also help with learning a language. -The speaker recommends setting small goals and celebrating progress in order to stay motivated and dedicated to learning the language. -The speaker stresses the importance of making mistakes and embracing them as a natural part of the learning process. -Practicing with native speakers can be helpful in improving pronunciation and understanding the nuances of the language. -The speaker advises setting aside specific times for language learning in order to maintain consistency. -Using a variety of learning methods, such as textbooks, apps, and conversation practice, can also be helpful in the language learning process. -The speaker encourages learners to be patient and not to get discouraged, as learning a language takes time and practice. -The speaker concludes by reiterating the importance of finding a personal approach to language learning that works for the individual learner. -No matter the method, motivation, dedication, immersion, and consistency are key to successfully learning a language.

Thanks brother for those good advices. I admire learning new language but I find some difficulty to memorize all what I learn in a day, and also I don't practice what I learn with native speaker ... Because I have a lot of things to do and I'm in the process of learning Spanish, English and improving my level in French(btw I'm Morocco, so I speak Arabic) . Nowadays languages are really important in any domain of our life. Take care of your selves my friends 💜
I think that is very difficult to leave the prejudices behind, because a lot of us are expected about things that people say, but I have faith and I know I can, and someday i will speak and write English very well. I’m from Argentina🙌🏽

I think solutions for struggling learn the language are 1-be consistent,so you have to study every single day. 2-you don’t have to pressure yourself by studying grammar and exhaust your mind just take it easy buddy. 3-be aware of the pronunciation because it’s the key to improve your listening ability and your speaking as well.

comprehensive inputs. That is what you need to learn every language you want. Don't try something too hard for you in the beginning. Just focus on what you can understand first.
It's better when we learn something in enjoyable and recreational way especially languages. We learn depending on our aims " traveling, pleasure, and skills"speaking, writing ..." " 1-basics " common sentences about greetings, weather,... By listening and repeating" everything is available now not like in the past so get advantage of that" 2-alphabet and word's pronunciation 3-grammar and syntax The best way is "as he said" to find a good partner. Listening is also the most important skill to develop whatever our degree of comprehension and we have to speak as much as we can whatever the mistakes that we make since they are instructive. Read and watch things that you like in this language And Good Luck 🌹🌹 2-
Many times I cant understand completely all conversations. But, I continúe with effort and sacrifice every day until that I can speak englis like a native speaker
It takes a lot of time, effort, perseverance to be able to learn a language you have to practice also the 4 skills of language learning that includes reading, writing, listnening, speaking,by learning these skills ,and once you've mastered these skills you can speak out the language you're trying to learn
I am doing the same right now, i listen ted talks to improve my english and comprehension and so far i am getting better at it but i still struggle while trying to make sentences in english

This is very impressive, sure there are flaws but very cool you learned so much
Diego, me too.
Awesome
Many people tell me that it's need to hear a video first in my mother tongue, and after in english with subtitles in my mother tongue en them so after to watch in english. But I have no pacience, I just watch in english. I don't understand a lot of words but I've do this for two months and now my unsderstanding is much better. I just need to improve my writing and my speaking too. My goal for this year is to be fluent!
Maybe my channel & podcast can help you too.
💚🧬 I am on my fifth language, super excited. Joyous love to connect with other cultures. 🧬💚
He speaks too fast but that was an amazing message, you have to push yourself if you want to learn
suer
@Burhan Diner what's your native language?
There r subtitles u can see them..
I like the way he speaks, very clear and fast. And i think he is very smart boy
Great advices, there are so many ways to learn a language. I think the most important step is to get started and continue to learn 5 minutes a day.
I think you misunderstood the meaning of native
I can understand what he says completely!
@jhames So I'm getting good at listening, cause I could understand everything he said, even though he's speaking fastly...
He is not speaking fast
Me too...I understand everything what he says ...I can read in english....my problem Is speaking english
I understand approximately 70% of his speech,
I understood 100% of the things he said.
B-)
It's all about finding situations in which you can experience the language. Very nice talk. Thank you.
Although I am not a native English speaker, I l learned English, still having been keeping studying it, to be able to use English as a tool at last and get some progress by “PUSHING MYSELF”!!!!!!!
Maybe my channel & podcast can help you too!
Yes there is a "superway" to learn languages, TO BEGIN, learn the mechanics, and then learn how to give and ask about the identities of objects and people. Keep the communication short and sweet. While that will not give you command over the totality of the language, you WILL be speaking it.
Suddenly I'm listening the video and reading the comments in English at same time... it's a good listening exercise, trust me!
Awesome
It’s so difficult for me to do it simultaneous , but if trust you, I will just try to do it 😂
Nice presentation. Don't be scared to push. Thankful.
Absolutely love this reply. A language is just a gateway to a whole new way of communicating, of speaking with people
Hello Santiago I'm agree with u the thing I most enjoy is speak in that language I want to learn.
This is a good advice for new people learning language. I think that a good way to progress in studying any language. I will remember to do that
I live in Finland, and I have Vietnamese girlfriend and I am moving to live and work in Vietnam in the future, this is a great motivator to learn.
Nothing hard is possible 💪
What a simple and fantastic model presented by Matyáš Pilin! I couldn't agree more. It's interesting how the idea of finding the "parent speaker" as a source of meaningful input, provider of feedback and somebody allowing you to test your hypotheses about what might be correct (or not) is actually similar to the way children ACQUIRE (rather than LEARN) languages. I also believe that risk-taking while learning a new language is mostly productive (the accompanying anxiety is often of the facilitating type).
Summary:
-Last summer, the speaker faced a challenge while alone in Tallin, Estonia when they were confronted with the phrase "Tere tulemast" and other Estonian phrases.

I think that is very difficult to leave the prejudices behind, because a lot of us are expected about things that people say, but I have faith and I know I can, and someday i will speak and write English very well. I’m from Argentina🙌🏽

I think solutions for struggling learn the language are
1-be consistent,so you have to study every single day.

We learn depending on our aims " traveling, pleasure, and skills"speaking, writing ..." "
1-basics " common sentences about greetings, weather,... By listening and repeating" everything is available now not like in the past so get advantage of that"
2-alphabet and word's pronunciation
3-grammar and syntax
The best way is "as he said" to find a good partner. Listening is also the most important skill to develop whatever our degree of comprehension and we have to speak as much as we can whatever the mistakes that we make since they are instructive.
Read and watch things that you like in this language
And Good Luck 🌹🌹
