      Funny as f#$* bra, Bill Burr is a total legend he just says what everyone
      thinks but it's politically incorrect to mention, Glen Fricker is also a total legend. Far too much guitar is grossly insufficient, woefully inadequate & nowhere near enough! 🎸 Peace, cheers & be nice to ya missus. 🎸

    I watched the Guitar Center Line 6 scenario play out right in front of me one day. In passing I made suggestion to the teenager and his parents that they might like to check out a couple of the used tube amps on the other end of the store before buying the Line 6. There were several options there that would have been perfect for the style of music he was playing and all would have landed at or under the price point of the Line 6. Apparently I either wasn't credible enough or the prospect of having 4,000 mediocre at best sounds outweighed the idea of a few really great sounds from a dead simple tube combo because they didn't even try any other amps after being directed to the Line 6 by the salesman. For every young player out there...when someone older than you comes by and makes a suggestion at least try it before you dismiss the idea. Chances are they've been there and are trying to save you the headache and the $.

    • @carlosek
      @carlosek 5 років тому +11

      Personally I think line 6 is great for beginner. You do not need to worry about getting pedals or getting a noise gate. I like playing with my line 6 but when I'm Playing with my friends I use peavey 6505 plus with a mesa boogie cab.

    • @tylerangle1990
      @tylerangle1990 5 років тому +6

      NoiseFeedMusic I see your point, and I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong. All I was trying to illustrate is the railroading of the customer straight to the Line 6. If you're going amp shopping you should bring your guitar (they did) and try A LOT of amps! Everything you can get your hands on in any store that's within reasonable driving distance, friends' amps etc. I was just hoping they'd check out more than one option before buying an amp that they'll probably grow out of pretty fast (I got the impression they were looking to upgrade from a small practice amp to something gig worthy). For exploration purposes there are also some really good software options out there now that can be had at a reasonable price and so many great stomp boxes out there too. Everyone goes about it their own way I suppose but how will you know what they sound like until you plug in and have a go? Again, was really just hoping they'd try some other options before buying that's all.

    • @spiderfan1974
      @spiderfan1974 5 років тому +1

      Tyler Angle People have to learn so you didn't want a kid buying a line 6. How did you find the guitar that was your missing piece? You played a lot of guitars cheap ones, mid priced ones, and expensive ones. From that experience you know what you like and don't like. I own two spiders a II and V they make noise in my geek room without making my neighbors immediately call the police or my ears bleed. When I have to play my peavey stack with the volume a little between 0 and 1 and even then it's still to loud there. Then there is the rare police visit which are lovely by the way. Why even play the thing to practice with?

    • @dominic18719
      @dominic18719 5 років тому +3

      I wish I'd listened to Glenn, because I bought a Line 6 spider V, and I hate it. Wish I had something like a Fender Mustang GT 100, or something like it. Either way, as a 15 year old, I can definitely say, this is absolutely true.

    • @dominic18719
      @dominic18719 5 років тому +3

      I'm not saying that you should get something really nice for a first amp. I'm saying that stooping as low as a line 6 spider V is excessively crappy. Something like a Joyo zombie with a harley benton 2x12, like glenn suggests, would be good for somebody starting out. I don't think that you have to have something garbage when starting out, but I don't think you should get something amazing either, or even great. Just something that DOESN'T sound like a car ran over it.

      I agree, I'd love to see a metal version of the "what makes this song great" idea. I've seen another UA-camr run that concept in a series and it's hard to keep interest in what he's saying when I think the heaviest thing he's covered there is Pearl Jam, even when he's put together a lot of good info about the song. Applying the concept to our genre would definitely be \m/.

      Dunkelwelpling It is no different from simply playing in another key. By all means, use 432, use 445 and whatnot, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. However, there IS something wrong with assertions such as: "432 Hz is BETTER than 440 Hz". Not unlike "G is BETTER than Bb", "134 bpm is BETTER than 113 bpm", "Antares is BETTER than Proxima Centaura"

    As a general answer for the “good vs bad production” question, for me personally it comes down to aesthetics. Different genres have different aesthetics and therefore different production. If the production of a record conveys the desired aesthetics, then it can be considered “good” and if not, it can be considered “bad”. And all of that is up to the listener.

    It's all well and good to explain how to record and mix well, but it's sometimes difficult to translate general tips to how to do well at a certain style. Like, black metal for instance. I'm assuming there are different idiosyncrasies in recording/mixing black metal than there are in, say, thrash metal or doom metal.

    1. For the guy recording with one mic, one of the best tutorials I've ever found is from Recording Revolution where he used one mic to record drums and copied the track several times and eqed them all differently to concentrate on relevant sections of the kit to mimic the effect of using multiple mics. I have used this basic technique in combination with the Glynn John's to bring out a lot more of the toms from the overheads using aggressive high and low cuts.
    2. What are your thoughts on using separate cymbals/kit for recording vs live(especially in the amateur level like most of us here)? My drummer has been talking about upgrading his cymbals and getting a set of thinner ones to be used specifically for recording to have a more crisp sound, and thicker ones for regular use spending probably $5000 for them all. I feel there may be some truth to this mindset in the studio/pro level but would the difference be a practical one considering the cost? Do you have any experience with this mindset?

    Hey, I can appreciate a metal drummer that incorporates a jazz style :p I'd prefer that over constant 16th bass drum pounding in 4/4

    Those of us from the NYC area who are old enough to remember the "U68" channel-the channel that had previously been the home of the Uncle Floyd Show-remember "Cherry Orchids" being played on the "Power Hour" pretty much every day. (I think it came on right after the video for "Zero The Hero".) I gotta say, I dug the guitar-neck cam in that video. The song actually wasn't that bad, but the video was pure cheddar.
    Never let a salesman talk you into buying anything, especially at Guitar Center or Best Buy.
    I thought Canada existed so we NYers could head up to Montreal and enjoy the Chez Parée.

    I bought a used Vox valvetronix; wasn't bad, but the tiny speaker was crap. So I took the speaker leads, and hooked them up to a nice little 12" cab. Cheap, easy, and as loud as I ever would want to get practicing in my apartment, or doing a bit of home recording, and my chakras did not give one shit.
    Rock on; thanks fer da vids.

    RE: recording drums with one mic. A few years ago we were able to get fantastic results from a mic placed about 6 or 7 feet in front of the drums at about snare drum height. Bear in mind that it was an expensive Neuman (U87?), the drums were tuned beautifully, and the room sounded amazing (Fantasy Studios in Berkeley). We had other mics up too, but I remember soloing the mic and on its own the drum sound was great. This might be a good place to start IF you have the space and a really good sounding room.

    Yes, please consider do a special on good vs. bad productions on records. That would be excellent to have side by side comparisons on effective mix decisions and point out where others should have taken a different approach. I'm curious what your take would be on Andy Wallace mixes, I don't see his mixes analyzed much and his balance in metal guitars is something I've always appreciated. Thanks as always and fuck off Elder Glenn, hasa diga eebowai!!

    To the guy looking for beginner courses. My advice: Do not spend all your money up front. The greatest engineers in the world can give you advice on gear and it might not fit your actual needs. So do this, choose a good DAW, get a good interface (spend $200 or more, maybe with at least four inputs. Interfaces with ADAT are expandable.) Get a good mic (I like the AT2030, or try the Rode NT1 as starter mics that will be worth keeping forever) a stand and cables etc. Then work with this for a while. Buy as you learn what YOU need for your situation. Keep watching this show, read Sound On Sound or others production articles. Don't buy it until you need it.

      Agree with this one. Buy as you go along with the process of recording but start small with equipment- more on room treatment first

    I would love to see a top 10 of the best production records! :D possibly folowed by a "how did they achive that sound" series(?) I know it would be very time consuming to research all that, but I like the idea, becouse I like to geek out on old gear xD
    Do what you feel Glenn! I will watch your chanel regardles :D cheers from Hungary!

    Could you do a video about process? You made videos about recording bass, guitars, drums, and all. But would be really nice to have a video on how is the process to recording a whole band. Where do they start? With guitar beds then drums? Is there an order for recording? How to know how many takes to make? How you organize the playlists of a band in a session and how to make choices, etc?
    That would be really cool.

      What would be really cool (but probably very time consuming) would be a rough "how to get" the production sound (like a video on researching the album, each instrument and on the mixing/mastering as well) resulting in an attempt to recreate a song from the album as closely as possible. Would be an awful lot of work though!

    Sad to hear great songs/albums get ruined due to bad studio techniques. One of my favorite metal albums, released in 1980, sounds like a pillow was placed in front of the speakers, with no punch or heaviness in the bass range.

    Hey Glen Love this channel. Fellow Hamiltonian here! Still living here in the Hammer. Just curious since we're in the same age group and grew up here, what local bands do you remember from that time? You remember J.L. Sound on King St? Keep telling like it is. Hell you're from Hamilton originally! That's probably where that no BS give it to you straight attitude comes from! Peace!
