    People don't wanna risk exposure? But exposure is the greatest currency available in the modern world. Who wouldn't want that?

      But there’re people who have secrets that are better of secret and thus people might have this in there thoughts “should I really reveal me secret? What if people made fun of me because of the secret I just exposed; shall I even expose my secrets at all?” (Oh and also what if the secret happens to be a murder?)

    Great advice Glenn! I would also add that in the UK, the added cover is a waste of money. I run a charity campaign... Basically people donate to my GoFundMe, I buy guitars, review them on UA-cam, then sell them with 100% of proceeds going to a local kids charity. I bought & sold a Harley Benton Flying V as part of this campaign & the new owner received it damaged. The courier firm KNEW I was sending a musical instrument when they sold me the insurance. They then refused to pay as "we do not cover musical instruments". I looked into it some more & found that (in the UK at least) there are NO courier companies who will compensate for damage/loss/theft of musical instruments. They'll still sell you the insurance cover though. Please mention this... People need to know.

    When buying a used instrument, ALWAYS take some tools with you and make sure all the adjustment screws work INCLUDING the truss rod. If you don't, you just bought some useless junk. Learned that lesson the hard way.

    5:50 Well, you CAN check their eBay feedback and easily filter just the neutral or negative ones in the last 1-6-12 months, and in some (or most?) cases, also see what items those were about, so it kinda depends. There's also the odd chance that, among thousands of buyers, they also had to deal with a handful of asswipes to went straight for negative feedback, before (or without) trying to resolve the issue.
    It's worth looking from both sides of the issue, wouldn't you say? Or just apply some reason / common sense...

      Selling can be rough. I have not used REVERB yet, but am looking forward to it. On Ebay, I ended up doing something where I could restrict bids from new accounts, or accounts with low feedback. This was after someone "bought" my expensive double pedal, and then told me that they "changed their mind, because they found a better one."
      I looked through things, and that guy bought a cheap off-brand single pedal.
      This caused me a great deal of problems, because I was selling the pedal because I really needed the money. But thanks to THAT jerk-off, I would now have to wait something like ten days before I could re-list
      This is a great suggestion for Glenn, because selling online can be just as perilous. I know there are idiot buyers out there, and there must be buyers who are scammers.

    I bought a Guitar Hero guitar on eBay for $36 (they're usually like $60) and the seller said he was finishing up finals for school and would ship it out the next week. Okay, fine, that sucks when I paid for six day shipping that was another $20, but whatever, I just want the guitar. The thing finally ships and I don't receive a tracking number for the package, only the message from eBay saying the seller had shipped the item. Another week goes by, still no item, so I message the guy. It takes him another week to get back to me and when he does all he says is "I'm on vacation, my co-worker was handling my eBay stuff." At that point I just said fuck it and got my money back from eBay cause it had been like a month and I was done with this guys bullshit.
    Even in the plastic instruments business, there's still scammers lol.

    TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. I bought a Peavey supreme XL with a Peavey XXL 4x12 cabinet for 100 bucks off Facebook. Before I left I asked if she had a guitar there so I could plug in and try it she said yes. I drove 40 mins to get there and she met me at the door saying her boyfriend had just left for band practise but that the amp worked great. I brought it home only to realize that the pots on the head were fucked and rendered the amp unusable as I don’t have the know how to fix it. When I told her this she said “how do I know you didn’t break it on the move, it worked great” meanwhile we know that kind of damage doesn’t happen to a solid state amp in transportation lol. At any rate I told her I was putting her name all over the Facebook buy and sell groups because she ripped me off. She then told me to just sell it all to someone else. Later that night she called the police and gave them my cell phone number because members of he buy and sell group began messaging her! Total shit show. On the plus side I was able to sell the cabinet that night and got my money back but still. First time I’ve ever been ripped off buying used gear. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. even if buying online, get them to film it and show the serial number and a code word on a piece of paper of random words and letters.

    • @slavesforging5361
      @slavesforging5361 5 років тому +2

      Agree. i always make sure it's okay if i bring a guitar to plug in. so far i've bought three used tube amps through local craigslist ads and haven't had any problems, but that's why i prefer craigslist and local music go rounds to ebay. i can inspect the item and test it before i buy it. i've definitely ordered from ebay, non-local music go rounds, guitar center online used, and reverb, but it's always a little bit of a risk, and overall has gone good enough, but not as good as buying and testing in person. I've definitely called people up to look at amps and they freak out when i mention i wan to plug in and hear the amp before i buy it. oddly enough, it always seems to be people that want too much money for the amp, or want you to 'make them an offer'.

      (+Dat Boy) That place is the best! It’s the only music store that I can stay just for hours because there’s a lot of stuff, the prices are good (because it’s all used, as well as good prices for used gear, and at least at the one I go to they give you a lot of discounts), they’re honest, you can try everything out beforehand (this isn’t for this store in particular, but it is a bonus from online), and the employees are so nice because they actually care about music and want the best for their customers. The only problem with it is when you lose track of time because you tried so much out. 😆

    That "meeting them" thing in the first tip really works btw
    Best deal I ever found was 50 dollars on craigslist for an Ibanez Gio and an Ibanez amp. Well, it was 50 for either and 90 for the lot, but even 90 bucks is a really good deal considering everything was and is high quality, plus he marked the lot down to 50 bucks just because he liked my spirit!
    This was a few years back, maybe 4 years ago? I still have them both. The kit was my first electric guitar and amp, and while the amp has been replaced (i just use the amp while doing repairs and that) the guitar has a feel to rival my 800 dollar fender :)
    POINT IS: this all happened because I was able to meet him. If it were me buying online from god knows who, who knows what would happen. Be smart, be safe, visit them :P

    A word of warning on "Signature Required" packages, I've had a FedEx driver leave one 5 houses down the street with people I really don't know and put a note on my door saying where they left it. I did eventually get my package, but it had been opened. I would definitely recommend setting up an account with the delivery service the seller is using and using the "Hold for Pickup" option. It's less convenient, but it's the best way to make sure you get your stuff.

    • @MichaelD8393
      @MichaelD8393 Рік тому

      I agree with that, especially with FedEx. I bought a camera a couple months ago; the seller shipped it via FedEx & I'm guessing they forgot to pay for Signature Required because the driver left it across the street from me because he got confused about the house number. Luckily my neighbor saw my name on the package & left it on my doorstep when they got home. "Hold for Pickup" is a great option to have when you think you won’t be home when a package arrives.

    I purchased a brand new Shecter Omen 6 for $60 off of Craigslist. I was super sceptical at first but after I contacted the seller she agreed to meet me at the local police station. There's a spot in the police parking lot for online transactions and is video monitored. The seller had no hesitation or problem meeting me and she mentioned that she was trying to sell the guitar for almost a year lowering the price over those months. She originally purchased online Amazon for $325 but didn't want to return it after she played it twice and was too heavy for her. Also, purchase other gear from people and had them meet at the same location or somewhere in public. The ones that were hesitant or flaky were bull crap deals and I walked from immediately. I found and purchased all types of studio gear at very inexpensive prices along with guitars and bass's too.
    There are scum bags out there but also amazing deals. Go with your gut and the advice on this video. Just weed out the douche bags and score killer deals. If it's too good to be true call the people out and ask to meet at the police station, it's either an awesome deal or a bs deal. Either way you will find out quickly with the sellers intentions.

    Great video Glenn! Last year I was NOT buying, but selling on a local site. I got a mail from a guy supposedly in Ukraine who was intrested in my bass. He told me that he'd FIRST send me money + the shipping fees through PAYPAL. I got a mail from PAYPAL that he send me the money but couldn't be claimed until I sent the shipping money to a shipping company of his choice through WESTERN UNION. To trust him he also sent me a photo of his "id". He even had A FAKE FACEBOOK PAGE, of course recently created with just one photo. They're REALLY trying hard. And in the end even the PAYPAL mail was fake, it wasn't from PAYPAL'S official mails.

    Advise #10 is absolutely a MUST! Im a very active seller and you dont believe how many people are trying you to scam you.... even if they dont want to scam you, stupid or lazy people may also cause losing the package or something else. In 15 years of selling experience, there are a lot of stories to be told.

    Great Video. I agree with every bit of advice and use all of those. i'd recommend one more tidbit. Research the gear and find out what the usual problems are with it! so you know what to look for when testing it. forums and youtube reviews are great for this. i've worked in manufacturing and know that everything has some kind of weak point that usually breaks first or most often. find out what that point(s) is before you go to buy it and check for it specifically when you test the gear.

    Very great episode. Thanks, definitely some things I didn't know. Need more. Like rules on getting paid, releasing materials, what materials to release and how not getting screwed when the "client" "needs" material ASAP and will get you the money "tomorrow".
    Been screwed that way too many times. Mixing a doc now that I won't release material until I get the check and they have a deadline for a festival.
    Maybe include how to invoice as well, as doing "hand shake deals" you more than often get screwed.

Take more than one picture at different angles, check the value before you list, write more than one sentence in the posting body, use proper spelling and grammar, etc.

    I used to buy and sell electronics on Craigslist when I was a teenager. I started small then slowly built up to high end exspensive items. I always met at police stations. The cops are super stoked about you being safe and cops have a ton of friends and love buying shit...so hey free marketing too.

  • @rbilleaud
    @rbilleaud 5 років тому

    As far as meeting in a public place, a lot of police departments here in the States are actually offering to let you do exchanges for Craigslist in their parking lots, or even inside the station. I think that's a great thing. Don't think anyone is going to try to rip you off, or worse, in a police station.

    Thanks for this! I've been using the used market VERY extensively and I've found some amazing deals and some big bullshit scam artists. You can find Epiphone Prophecies for 80€ or you can find someone buying acoustic foam from wish.com and selling it for 10x the price. It's amazing how you can gauge peoples moral integrity from what they're selling you

  • @antonquintus578
    @antonquintus578 5 років тому

    Thanks for the tip about brokerage fees. I typically don't ship outside the US, but sometimes I relent if a quality buyer really wants the item and sends me a nice message. Unless I'm selling something that is worth at least a couple hundred bucks, the shipping is almost always enough to destroy the value of the deal. It is usually cheaper for a customer to buy an item brand new from Amazon or musician's friend than it is to buy it from me, unless I want to lose money on it. That, and eBay's shipping estimates never let you include insurance and signature required, so you always lose money unless you overstate your dimensions and weight when setting up your auctions, which can make you appear less competitive. If you are doing one or two items once in a while, eating a few dollars in shipping isn't a big deal on big ticket items. But when you are consistently sacrificing 10-15% of your profit margin to Xtra shipping expenses, plus the almost 20% cost of doing business securely with eBay and PayPal, you are taking a huge hit to your profits and need to make up for it by turning extra volume, which means extra work, which also means you are taking away from your capability to get something else done. After you figure in your own expenses like time spent and shipping materials, sometimes it just isn't worth it. Always figure in ALL your costs before you decide if you made a profit on something.
