    Hi Glenn,
First of all want to thank you for such great and valuable content. I followed some of the advices you offered on your channel and found them to be very helpful, thanks.
As far as Spark 40 amp goes, just wanted to share my personal experience….
Following tips and recommendations from many, after months of waiting, finally got my amp…paid $260 plus the bag. I felt iffy about buying an amp so dependent on app, I know it wasn’t really an entry level toy, but I wanted an amp that I could grow with and take advantage of all it had to offer.
Then we were undergoing major construction, so my Spark was in its bag on a shelf for months and I kept using tiny Fender Mustang headphones amp to practice. Finally, when I set up my room and started using my Spark 40 again, the speaker sounded very dull and boxy, then I always played through the headphones….sounded much better. When I reached out to support, they recommended updating the firmware - that did not help, I decided to let it go. Few weeks ago I noticed another issue….Loud pop sound coming from the speaker every time the amp turned (power switch) off. Contacted support again asking what can be done and if this would damage the speaker, their response was….
Since the unit was no longer under warranty, I would need to send it in for repair/replacement and pay for shipping and $110 for repair of Control Panel).
So here I am, totally pissed, not even knowing what the amp is truly capable of
now have to pay approximately $40 for shipping and additional $110 for repairs for the amplifier that cost me $260 less that 18 months ago. Not sure I want to go that route.
Curious what are your thoughts? I could probably get an interface card and just use amp sims considering there are so many great affordable options out there.
Should I consider another practice amp? Which one would you recommend as a solid work horse and yet something not too costly?
Thank you so much for your efforts to help.
    Regards.
    -Matt.

I finally tried out Reaper after hearing you praise it so much, and it's been a life changer. I've always been limited by my laptop's performance, but no matter much shit and plugins I throw into a project, this DAW keeps running without any interruption or dropout.

    Hey Mr Fricker,
I am just getting into recording. I've signed up for your ProMixAcademy classes as well as the ultimate reaper course. When it comes to recording guitars, should I start off by running my Kemper directly into an IR through SPDIF, or should I try my hand at recording through a Mic'd cab? I am less interested in getting good results fast, and more curious about what you think would be a better overall learning experience for guitar recording, or mixing as a whole. My thoughts are, recording direct could lead to a more efficient workflow to gain faster experience from, while micing an amp would help me train my ears, and provide lessons in the art of tinkering to find the sounds that i prefer. What do you think a persons primary focus should be in the early stages of learning to record guitars, and building their first mix?

Hey Glenn! I'm really liking the idea of a small power amp like the Seymore Duncan and some kind of modeling gadget but when it come to speakers, would you recommend a full range one or a guitar cabinet? Also, a floor monitor shape? I've never really got the idea of having a speaker behind you. Isn't that what a P.A. is for? I'd think a small floor monitor pointed at you would be better, especially for the front of house sound guy. I've done that gig before and hated crank 4 by 12s. Thanks and love your show!

Hi Glenn. I love the Slate trigger 2 stuff but I have serious double trigger issues when I play fast fills around the kit. Also, no ghost notes because it’s either a trigger hit or nothing. What would you suggest for the double trigger problem? Also, what would you do to be able to have the trigger sound as the back beat but also have ghost notes? I think I should add tracks for each drum and blend the triggered tracks with the non triggered tracks to get the dynamics of ghost notes with the big sound of the samples? Cheers from Oregon.

Budget music gear: Orange Crush Mini pumping into an external cab is surprisingly awesome. Check out Henning Pauly's review. You can get the amp for less than $70US. Pair that with a Harley Benton cabinet, and you have a decent starter rig for not much money.

As an adult of mediocre skill, and expensive gear, I have a stance on this! When your younger or newer, getting that sound through a 4x12 for the first time can feel like finally "getting there". finding a solution like a crush mini paired with the cheapest working cab might just be that ticket. Tone is very subjective, and too many people are right F'n snobs about it. id like to reference the white stripes, whos music was played on a plastic silvertone. White would never claim to have good tone, because it dosent matter, good music is just good music.

To the first question about the spark practice amp, he might want to try an amp attenuator. Bugera makes one for $99 and it lets the amp get the power to the tubes but allows you to play your cab at reasonable levels and get the sound he wants. Just a thought.

    • @rickc2102

Re the question of power amp for a modeling system I'd recommend looking at the Tech 21 Power Engine Deuce Deluxe. It's a combo with a 12" speaker. I have the earlier model - the Power Engine 60 - and give it a big thumbs up for that use case. I sometimes integrate it into a show along with one of my Fender amps but it's perfectly fine on its own. In fact, the new version has significantly more power on tap. Also, there's now a 1X12 extension cab available for it if you feel you need that.

Another trick that's similar to taping the strings is putting a hair scrunchy (or even taping off ALL the strings) at the first fret if you're going to be playing a solo high up on the neck without playing any open strings. Serves the same purpose, but lets you use all the strings. Also, if it's a hair scrunchy, you can push it up above the nut when you're done with the solo.

Would love to see a comparison of free (Nalex, LePou, Ignite Emissary, Roots, etc) against the paid stuff (Neural DSP, STL Tones, Guitar Rig, etc) in a full mix. Hey Glenn!
Firstly wanna say thanks for the awesome tips and tricks with mixing. Your channel has helped me a shitload with my studio work so definately gonna grab your Pro Mix bundle next.
Now one of the bands I play in is on the opposite side of the country where I stay (I'm from South Africa) and I usually fly over there when we play and record. I use an old Ibanez Thermion amp but it's expensive and a bitch to drag along everytime I travel. I don't have the budget for a Kemper but was looking at maybe purchasing the Positive Grid Bias Mini as it has the Amp Match feature. Figured I could take my tones everywhere but in a smaller package.
Would love to get your thoughts on The Bias Mini also on the Thermion (some love it, some hate it and most don't know about it) or if you have any other suggestions regarding my problem.
Thanks again, keep up the awesome work and as always Fuck you Glenn.

  • @Just-Michael

I too use Steven Slate drums on Studio One. I find that I need to absolutely slam the snare with a compressor to get it to sound right. It also depends on which samples you use, of course, and also how well your overheads and room are set up. I went through the kit I use and adjusted all of the overhead and room levels for each sample to make it sound like a real drum kit would sound and that helps the overall sound. If there is any EQ or compression on the SSD samples then it's very little. It depends on the type of music. Metal takes a little more tweaking to get right.

Hey Glen, I just finally got the gear required to record drums, and I'm having a bit of an issue with my bass drum sound. I'm using the Gibraltar click pad with plastic beaters to get that click metal sound, and it sounds great in the bass drum mic, but the overhead mic has this high end slap sound that just sounds like garbage. I tried flipping to felt beaters but it kills the click.. Should I try to EQ it out? It's kinda up where the cymbals and snare are so it makes everything else sound weak. I still don't have proper overhead mics so I'm using an AT2020 as an overhead, and then copying the track and treating the copy as a room mic, and honestly it works pretty good for other genres but metal lol. Any advice?

    Hi Glenn,
    I have few questions.
I didn't find anything on your channel about recording acoustic guitars...
I want to make decent demos...so what you think about:
    1)Steinberg ur44 or I need something better?
2)I like recordings with a dual mics, for the "budget" option,
    for recording guitar and vocals, is it better:AT 4041 + TLM 102 or103; OR 2x AT 4041 + Rode NT 2000?
Price range Used / New is about 220$ - 1200$(
    in my country)
    3)Amps Marshall JCM 900 or JMD1(Yes,
I like Doug Aldrich and Whitesnake,
I'm guilty :) ) price is 600$ for few months old heads.
    What you think about JMD1?
This is it, try some Rakija(Kajsija, Dunja, Sljiva)

Hey Glenn, is there a way I can output my amp sims into my 6505+ amp and 2x12 cab? Maybe through the effects loop? Instead of playing it out of my studio monitors? Not to record, just to play. I would love to hear Tonehub out of my Tube amp and v30s in my 2x12.

Hey Glen. I have a question regarding using a physical distortion pedal into an amp sim. I use a TC Electronic Eyemaster (HM2 clone) to get the distortion I want and run that into my audio interface. In the DAW I have tried running that signal into various amp sims and they all sound like shit. The best result I have gotten so far is to run the input signal straight into a cab sim (Lancaster Audio) and EQing a bit and that's it. Can you give any tips on using physical pedals in this way or is it really a case of 'if you like the sound then its ok'? FWIW I have bought the HM2 plug-in from Audiority but it doesn't sound quite right so I am still using the Eyemaster. Cheers.

GLENN! I followed all your advice on how to mix/record metal drums to record a rock song. NEVER HAD THE DRUMS SOUNDING SO GOOD! Never figured out how to record or mix drums before your videos. Always sounded like shit. You're amazing dude. Thank you from Detroit! You ever gonna release the how to mix room mic video?

Hey, Glenn! I'm an aspiring inventor in the musical field. I've got a couple prototypes, but I'm kind of stuck on what to do next (other than getting a patent).
Since you have experience with the Cockblocker, I thought you might have some insight. Would you take an idea to an existing company? Develop it yourself? What are some considerations that might not be so apparent?
Thank you so much for what you do for the home recording community!
    Cheers from Las Vegas!!!

Glenn, I’ve been thinking about putting a band together sometime (probably not this point in time, but some point) and I was wondering how do I find musicians with similar influences that are interested in starting a band, and what are some of the most important things to keep in mind when starting a band?

Glenn! When I think about bass stuff, I always wonder if the stuff from Quilter is actually any good. Tell me you have plans to review some of that in context so that I don't have to just wonder via word-of-mouth that it's decent? It's gonna be tough to go see a show where anyone uses Quilter gear, at least for a while. Thanks!

Spark is really helping me right now recording drums, we don't have a space where we can separate blaring guitar amps from the drums. Fortunately both guitarists have Sparks and plugging in the headphone outs to record their scratch tracks direct without having to worry about leakage is a huge help. Pretty decent tones too, though not better than the real thing of course but it could be usable for demo recording if you needed it.

    Hey Glenn!
I am getting into mixing with busses for the instruments like drums, guitars etc. and I can't figure out how panning and creating space with each instrument is still possible. I think it really comes down to a misunderstanding of mono and stereo, signal routing into and out of the group busses and how this all affects the end result. I feel kind of overwhelmed and don't know where to start.
I just think I haven't really figured the basics of the DAW out. Maybe you could go into that stuff on your channel more. Cheers from Germany!

Just curious: Do you pay the musicians that appear on your channel? For example, you have a guy come in to demonstrate some concept you're talking about and he lays down an original bass track, a rhythm track, and a lead track. Plus (usually) a drummer... all of which take time. Are they doing it because they're your friends and want to help a buddy out, or are they getting paid?

I don’t know, ever since the eq update a few days ago I’ve been able to get some killer sounds out of it, even getting a pantera like high end grind sound out of it with the 6505 impulse. It’s pretty cool, and I guess the question you need to ask is would you as the recorder/mixer notice and would the audience notice. I don’t know the answer, but I suspect it’s quite possible neither would now with the 6 band eq on board. Interested to hear your thoughts glen.

Hey what's up. I have a question, please. I was taking a look at the Two Notes Torpedo models. I have JVM 410c 100w 2x12 that screams like hell at Volume 1 on OD channels in an apartment.
The question: Two Notes Torpedo Captor 16 Ohms without shipping goes for 153 EUR (20db reduction) compared to Two Notes Torpedo Captor X 16 for 399 EUR (up to 38 db reduction). Given that I am interested only in taming the combo, is it worth the extra 246 EUR to get -18db attenuation or is -20db overall enough? Happy for suggestions on a different product altogether. Still, I really like the sound and versatility of the Marshall combo and I would be hardly able to sell it these days (also got it as a gift, it would break my heart to let it go). Thanks from Slovakia.

On the Solar guitars comment, if you insert another distributor into the chain, who also has to make money, and who I assume will still have to pay some type of import fee, you will wind up paying the same amount, if not more, anyway. The advantage though would be being able to walk into a store and try them before buying. I took that chance though, and was very glad I did, love mine.
