It's a great, thoughtful additionby the composer, calling back to the original's soundtrack while also metaphorically tying with the scene at play...this verging reunion between Misato and Kaji/God, through what you might call a "marriage" of ideals in the former's case achieved by a similar sacrifice...with Canon being a popular wedding song.
Simply fantastic.
You can hear its cello section in the very first notes. The whole thing is Canon, just...crowned.

I would've loved Misato to have actually lived a happy life with her son.
She might have came back to life after Shinji rebuilt the world. So everyone could have gotten their happily ever after ending.

Misato was not a good mother. She was not a great guardian for Shinji or Auska. She lacked as even a lover for Kaji. That said, she was the matriarch for the show. Flawed, but real, she is the embodiment of the feeling of grit. Rash, sultry, bold, but still a broken girl out for revenge. The way she eventually has a child and then repeats what her father did strikes a cord with me. She hated her father, but also abandoned her own son for the greater good. Such a deep character. Her death was fitting and well done in the final film.

What a beautiful analogy of a character. Thank you so much for sharing this. It pains me that covid and the director own choice to release the movie on Amazon Prime for international audiences as opposed to pushing the theatrical release for all of us to see it in teathers. I understand his feelings towards "otakus" and fandoms, but Evangelion is a work of art and very personal. We built a relationship with these characters, reflecting ourselves for over 20 years. I wish we had say good bye in a proper and better way.
I've never watched, but only heard of Evangelion. Regardless of UA-cam's algorithm working mysterious ways, this song is absolutely gorgeous and Shirō Sagisu is a genious. Great work to all involved and thanks for the upload.

@@nabieladrian My dad would wake me up 6 a.m. on a saturday to watch it with him. It was my first exposure to anime; the reason I got into playing Piano (I came across sheet music for pachabel's canon) and still deeply important to me.
I think I might go rewatch it all again.
Song makes me cry every time. My mom died almost a year ago. I really miss her. The grief hasn't really gone away, it's just gotten easier to live with.
And now my dad's dead too. April 18th, 2023 and July 15th 2024.
Because no matter the universe, no matter how many times someone turns reality inside out, Misato loves her boy, and she'll fight for him however she needs to.
Shiro Sagisu might be one of the greatest score composers of all time, his soundtracks are works of art on their own.

My dad died through this hard path, i don't really know where to go as i don't have a mother- I'm alone to myself even when there are people around me, it feels horrible but i know, i know i cant stop because that's not what my father would have wanted, i've been waiting for this movie and it's themes, it's music, it's animation. I was mad at Misato when I going through Q.mad for she didn't be there to protect shinji. and now here we are, seen that Misato became brave mother. willing to stand in front her child and those she care and love to protect them. even till now its still hit me hard when this song start playing. thank you

You know this song is just a painful reminder that they once again gave Misato the best character next to the main character, Shinji, a terrible ending in the form of a sacrificial death for a redemption plot. Honestly, I don’t approve of, appreciate, nor applaud it , frankly. I’ve always seen Misato as Shinji’s mom whereas Yui is his birth mother, Misato gave him the faith and confidence in himself in the first movie. I thought when Asuka called out he needed a Mother not a lover was a hopeful sign she would atone by living along side Shinji and her son Ryoji, for next 14 years. For the time she missed with Ryoji and the years taken from Shinji that he would grow up her there to watch over him. It felt pretty stupid for him to end with Mari, but I don’t dislike it, Y’know. I just hate that she had to die once again and how they had her go out wasn’t exactly okay for me at least.
