An Aquarium Filter Guide For Planted Tanks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- In this quick tutorial, we talk about the aquarium filtration in the planted aquarium, discussing the importance of aquarium canister filters as one of the possible off-the-shelf solutions, the different filter types, and much more. Enriched with beautifully planted aquariums as usual.
The question of the day though is how much is 60 x 5? Hint: we said 350 in the video. :)
Some of you have asked about the fish at 0:22, it is Brevibora dorsiocellata.
Seachem Matrix for the Oase Biomaster filters is no longer available.

My nose bleed from these rich aquarist items, lol.
This music just makes everything sound like I can’t afford any of this lol
Haha. 😅
Hahaha
LOL
I feel like I can only afford to watch a couple minutes of this video and I'll have to wait until my next pay check to watch a little more
This swanky music and European voice overs could only possibly be aimed at wealthy German aquarists.
anybody else realise that 60 x 5 isnt 350 or is it just me :DDDDD love the channel learning a ton
Some have already commented. What a noob I am!
@@GreenAquaShop it is funny though. but thats what makes your channel so realistic and awesome. i also find it very sympathic that you guys work in the same city i studied in before i came back to cologne. love for BP
@@GreenAquaShop If I have 45 ppi sponges in the 600 OASE prefilter, do I still have to put a sponge in the filter or just the organic media?
Technically he is right 60x5 a 300 liter aquarium and with the Oase 350L should be used for a minimal filtration purposes like he said you could never over filter lol
I got the cheapest, no-name Chinese canister filter I could find for my 40 gallon tank and it has kept trucking for three years. As long as you understand the stages of filtration (mechanical then biological then optional chemical, then back to the tank) any canister filter will work, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars.
I just use filter floss then Seachem Matrix in my canister. Simple, cheap, and it works.
Wow had music to go with the filtration concepts. I feel like I just took a seat in the high end section . Love it!
Cheers Annisette, glad you like this video and the production too!
"Welcome to the beautiful world of Aquascaping', am always in love with this into
Cheers Jackson, thx man.
Some people have beautiful aquarium plants no fertilizer no heater no filter but how they only use led light how is this possible
informative ... Can you please do a video on LIGHTS., Like types of light to use , how to calculate luminous for the planted tank...
Sure, already planning to, stay tuned for that too.
@@GreenAquaShop thank you..
👍🏻
Adding one more point to the question, please tell us about the light without the use of a PAR meter. The cost of it is pretty high on this side of the world. Please mention about LED watt according to the depth of the tank with plants that demand medium light. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the hint, noted. 👍
All mechanical media should go before biological in order to keep the biological media clean.
Yes, exactly. Thanks for clarifying that Richard. 🙏🏻👍🏻
Yep, there was also chemical within the biological media. Shouldn’t this be the last step?
Yes, Purigen - that I talked about - would be chemical. I don't see the need of anything else under normal conditions in planted tanks.
@@GreenAquaShop but why then the fine filter wool as last step? It's a mechanical filter so it should then before the biological media.
'Cause we said so.😂Just kidding. We actually put the bag of purigen just underneath the mesh at the top...
Great content guys and as always, Balázs you are the man.
Thank you Filipe 😀😍
I got an EHEIM experience 250 working with my ADA 45P setup. Will matrix remove nitrates?
Wow informative beautiful and perfect
Waiting for this kind of videos for long, please make one on co2 dosing too
Thanks, Mithun from India
Thanks! We'll sure do Mithun, it's on our list already. Stay tuned for it. 👍🏻🙏🏻👍🏻
He has the order of media all mixed up, all Mechanical filteration needs to happen first .
I love your videos and am learning so much from them. With my first aquascape I have had a number of rookie set backs with lots of algae issues or plants dying off. However, with you help I’m starting to get on top of it and am confident my tank will look good eventually. A good thing is I am already a user of Seachem Matrix and Prime. So it’s nice to have that right! Thanks from Australia
Sounds like a good plan and I'm so happy you have patience. We all need time to figure things out, even I do, with all this experience, I think I'll talk about this in next week's video, we're just about to shoot it.
This might be unwanted advice but if you are a beginner I will tell you that there is a reverse of the coin, if you want another perspective on these issues please watch a video by Father Fish and learn about the Walstad method. You might be surprised.
Hi Balazs, great informative video. Great to see you recommending different brands whilst being sponsored by Oase. Keep up the great work. All the best, Martin.
Thanks Martin, yeah, besides being sponsored by Oase, we really like their innovation and their approach towards the hobby - I can say that here without being too nice with them "officially" 😂- nobody else is doing that currently in the market, they all kinda' sleeping - but there are many good brands that make durable and reliable filters, and we're using and selling them with success. This hobby has many faces, many styles and many brands, and that's how it should be. Cheers. 🙏🏻👍🏻
@@GreenAquaShop Well, there's only one brand in the market (that produces filters) that is thinking about aquascaping (ADA), all the other are directed for fishkeeping. When I win the lottery I will invest in an aquascaping only brand to compete with ADA :D
Who chose the music.......
Does the purigen comes with bag ? Or do we have to buy it seperately. If seperately so could you suggest any , because I checked but some are mentioning that it's not for purigen *specifically*
The 100ml purigen comes with a bag, the bigger boxes need a separate product, called 'The Bag'. :)
Why didn't you talk about hang on the back type filters at all?
I love the music you used, and the info you gave
May will do a video about them in the future. Canisters are more popular in the hobby. Large capacity, less distraction etc.
Thanks for another great, informative video. Also, if I can chime in on the disagreement with regards to filter media placement within the canister I say this. You guys at Green Aqua do a spectacular job and are clearly very successful with all of your display tanks as is evident to all of us. Beyond that you share with us how it is done. How anyone can argue or disagree with your method considering your success is beyond me. Who can argue with success? lol....Thanks again!
The hobby is full with this agreement and disagreement. And that is good as this moves the hobby. There are several old rules / habits, which may not work anymore as things changed a lot. Who else kept a 240L aquarium with 260W LED 15-30yrs ago? Well LED was not there, but a same intensity light? Not really much or no one. We need to find new path, new methods which support these conditions. There are many ways for the success, but the one we describe works for us and for many of our clients. So we're brave enough to recommends them for anyone. The goal is to minimize the maintenance and maximize the joy what a beautiful tank can give you. We always focused on the overall health.
Watching most of your videos before going to bed and love every single of them 😅 as I am soon gonna rescape my 54L. But guess what I can not afford these *Canister Filters*. 😭😢
Cheers, glad we can provide you for some nice content for your evenings! Don't give up on canister filters, if you save up, you'll be able to eventually afford one, it's the single most important thing in aquascaping - filtration.
@@GreenAquaShop i bought eheim 250 experience for 54L isnt it too big?
For a very planted aquarium: OASE Thermo 350 has a flow rate of 1100 l / h. In the 60P, he spoke at a ratio of 5 (300 l / h). Why not an OASE Smart Thermo 100 with a flow of 600 l / h? Can you clarify me?
// The best youtube channel. Get a shop in Lisbon: P
1. They are sponsored, so they will go for the best
2. The bigger = more media, the stronger = better flow
3. It's much easier to maintenance the 350 than the small filtosmart
hello green aqua team. I have a 75.40.40 planted tank. I have insufficient circulation. I'm undecided between the oase biomaster terhmo 600 and 850 models. Many people have mentioned that the flow rate cannot be adjusted. Is there such a situation? I will be thinking of a 1 meter planted tank in the future. If the flow setting is available, it was wise to get the 850 model. Do you think the 850 model will storm the 120 liter tank? Is it possible to use it by adjusting the flow rate? What would your choice be? Thanks in advance green aqua team. good run.
Hi, ım just in same position for now. Im going to setup 70x40x35H tank and thinking about 900 l/h flow rate isnt looking too much? Shouldnt ı decrease it? I wonder what did u do?
60 x 5 = 350?????? 13:41
Haha indeed, can't count while speaking English in front of the camera.
Math is hard lol
I was searching for that comment lol
A very simple and honest guy who knows almost everything about filtration. Thank you sir for all your generous knowledge sharing. I listen to you.
I don’t understand his POV on sponge. IMO it’s some of the best to house beneficial bacteria. I think this can be misleading to new hobbyist. I run sponge as well as matrix. I also run floss on top of the sponge to catch particulates before they get to the mag of matrix to help keep it clean and free of clogging the surface area.
There is way to much focus on the media. These people aren't scientists so they really don't know what they are talking about all that much. A canister full of sponges is enough, even a good internal filter is enough. Especially with plants. There is more than enough bacteria in the tank.
The main thing is you need to keep the water moving and remove the waste and particles. A filter which is too small will clogg up quickly, not cause a shortage of bacteria. The size of the filter vs the tank is based on a calculation, the water companies do simlar for the tap water supply. But you don't really need a Oase biomaster 600 for a 80L tank, it's a waste of money.
hai hello sir,
Am Jackosn Dominic..... let me tell you my tank details, can you help me to select one filter for me ..? actually am beginner in this filed and shrimp planted aquarium is am planing.... my tank size is 40 x 40 x 50 (W x L x H) 80.0 liters, which is approximately 21.1 U.S. gallons.
so can you suggest me a good filter which is suitable for shrimp tank. and one more favor, medium light planets am planing to use my tank so can you suggest me one light for my aquarium
A BioMaster 600 or similar. That would be the best. With good filter media, Matrix. There's no such thing as medium light, pls check out our lighting tutorial. There's high-light for CO2 tanks and low light for non-CO2 tanks.
Do you recommand to buy a termo filter instead of classic filter ? Or it's only usefull when we absolutly want to hide the heating ? I have a 60L aquarium.
I'm looking for the Eheim 2371 Pro 4+ 250T or the Oase Biomaster Thermo 250, but 100€ more just for the heating... it's not correct (compared to standard models).
I don't like to see any tech in the tank - just the necessary stuff, so I try to hide whatever I can. You only need a heater if you think the tank will go below - say - 21 degrees, provided you don't have anything very special in the tank. If I was unsure, I would just get a regular Biomaster, you can install the heater in it later if needed.
@@GreenAquaShop Thank you so much, i will try like this. I hope the Biomaster 250 will be enough.
In addition it seems to me that buying the heater separately is much more economical. :)
250 is a bit too small for a 60P. We even have a 600 under our 60p in the gallery, it's the most stabile tank here - I am sure it is because of the filtration. But I know that is an overkill.
Amazing video guys🔥. Anyway, would you recommend using an external co2 reactor on a 60p tank with 1200L/H flow rate? Or is it better to just use the in-tank ceramic diffuser?
I would use a diffuser in a 60p, not a reactor. For sure.
Love it! I really appreciate videos like this from the Green Aqua team, of course as always they provide great quality videos, but as a consumer/ hobbyist I feel I can trust their content if not categorized as instructional videos but opinion pieces. The Green Aqua channel is the real deal for aquarists! Thanks guys and gals!
Yeah, opinion. Good approach. This is what we think. Thanks for your kind words, and glad you like our contents. Cheers. 👍🏻
@@GreenAquaShop the heater is necessary if the room temperature does not fall below 22 in winter. I can buy the non thermo version much cheaper.

Is it really necessary to use seachem stability??
Not really, you can get by without it too.
Hi, thanks for the great video. I currently have a bio master thermo 600 in use. Following your suggestions in the video I would like to change the inner sponges with Seachem Matrix. How much does each tray hold?
I'm not sure, answering the comments from at home, maybe 1 liter each?
Super advice as always :). Make a film about fertilization. It's very important in our aquariums. I will be very grateful. :) :)
Well, that is a topic we definitely do not want to cover separately - but we might talk about it in one of our future tutorials, thanks so much for your suggestion. We think that dosing is really straightforward. Just use a good quality aquascaping fertilizer (we use our own Green Aqua brand as well as the ADA range in our gallery) and dose according to the brand recommendations.
Green Aqua something that is not covered enough is spotting nutrient deficiency. Recommended dose might not be appropriate if you have a lightly planted tank or heavy planted. Sometimes you have to visually inspect the plants and adjust. Can you cover this sometime ?
Hello. Have you ever tried or tested biohome filter media? Would be interested to know is it really as good as they say. Thanks.
Well, there are a lot of people advertising their beliefs in all areas - filter media included. Also, there are many good quality filter media on the market that we did not talk about. So yeah, it's really difficult to know. Unfortunately we have zero info on that filter media, never tried it, but that does not mean it would not be good. 👍🏻
So I have a 3 bin filter, you’re saying all I need on bottom is coarse foam, then fill the middle bin full with Seachem Matrix, and on the top final bin fill it half way with Seachem Purigen and top it with fine foam.
That’s all I need in my filter?
Running 2 (307 fluval) filters.
Reply would be greatly appreciated :)
Perfect, I have learned much about External filters, but one thing I don't understand, Why are you using a Oase 350 for a 60L tank, which has a more flow rate, instead we can use for example Oase 250 ? and you said : Never over filter a tank. can you please explain ? Thanks.
Our most stabile tank at green aqua is a 60L tank with an Oase Biomaster 600. 💡
Hi, Super Tutorial I have a question about the 220l aquarium, I want to use the Oase 850 bucket filter and I wonder if it will not be too strong and will make me a washing machine. Maybe the Oase 600 would be better?
24/7 of filter running in 2024 means that you need to double your working hours to keep up with the electricity bill 😂😂😂
Is it good to use activated carbon in the canister filter for planted tanks?
Thank you for all the informative videos! I am about to embark into aquascaping and I think I have seen almost all your videos! Quick question on the filtration of the external filter. The one I am getting (JBL CristalProfi e902 greenline) comes with 6 sponges.. From your video (If I understood properly) Should I replace those sponges? Hope you can get back to me to get this clear. And Is it good if I remain with this filter or should I look for a better one?
Beautifully produced video, excellent information, and best of all that aquarium room looks like heaven on earth! Too bad you are so far away!! Your tanks are absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing. I wish we had a place like this near me, our stores are much less loved.
Thank you for the videos, they have helped me a lot.
I have a question, I'm building a 60-liter one and I'm thinking about buying an Oase canister, but I'm not sure about the size. I'm thinking about the 850 but also the 600. I intend to use the same one in a future project with a larger aquarium. That way when I migrate I won't need to buy other equipment. Is this choice too much for the ADA 60P?
You said never see the companys description about the product filtration capacity then how are we supposed to know the details?
Has anyone done any testing on filter media to understand what is good or not? i.e. how well Seachem Matrix performs against sponge or K1 for a given amount of Ammonia input? Also, there is a lot of discussion on this channel about "High Quality" filters and media. I am not quite sure what that means.
As always, Balazs your production value and information is great - love the guide and look forward to the next thing you make!
Thanks again for your nice feedback, much appreciated mate! We're trying our best to keep the level up. Cheers.
Is Purigen suitable for a Black Water Aquarium ?
Will "CerMedia MarinePure Block" raise pH in planted aquarium?
Hello! I would like to thank you for the excellent tips! The channel is helping me a lot in knowledge and also in the artistic part, in the development of the aquarium layout. Hugs from Brazil!!
Ok so im far from rich lol can you recommend the lowest priced but best filter for a 55g? Please??? 😊
Hi, I have a fluval 207 for my Ada 60F. How much seachem matrix can I add? Seachem reccomend 250ml every 100 liter. What could happen if I overdose it? Thank you very much!
So, the proper order of the things you need to have in the filter is - from the bottom to the top: 1. sponge, 2. Seachem Matrix, 3. Seachem Purigen, 4. fine filter mesh. Right?
I don't understand -- can someone help me out? What does B say that the larger the aquarium, the lower smaller the flow-rate should be, and the smaller the aquarium, the higher the flow rate? Isn't it suppose to be the opposite? It's so counter-intuitive. Would love for anyone to help explain this to me, thank you!
Hi there,
I just bought the Oase Biomaster 600 for my 125ltr Tank with 2 goldfish. I have a question about the setup of the Biomaster 600.
Why put the fine filter as last in de filter and not at the bottom? al the small dirt is flowing trough the biological media. I`m curious about the reason. There must be, i just dont see it ;)

I have a 60 liter tank 50x35x35 and a oase biomaster 350 schould I use tabs on the hose to reduce the outflow? Not sure if I Wil get an tornado in my tank without using tabs. I also use 16/22 that goes to 12/16 because I use those lily pipes
Bonjour.
I wash my bio média when thé water exit To filter slowly.
Sorry for my english.
Its possible 1 years 2 years and more.
But plants actually use Ammonia as nutrient much easier then they decompose NO3 which is much more stable and harder to decompose than NH3. Plants are them self the best biological filter. I use filter only for circulating water, the simple pump would do but it is harder to hide it in aquarium that external filter.

Hi l really like your videos it helpful. Can you give me some information about sump filter can I use it for my aquarium plants???
Hey Guys,
how much Seachem Matrix do i need for an eheim 1200 XL ? Can i mix the Matrix with other brands bio filtermedia ?
I’ve tow questions first, you say don’t clean your filter under tap water because of chlorine in the tap water and use aquarium’s water to clean filter media, what about if tap water doesn’t contain chlorine like her in Danmark? You use lotion for water to remove chlorine, why don’t you use same lotion to tap water to clean your media? With cleaning media and sponge by aquarium’ water, it’s the same you use toilet water to clean the toilet!!! If these lotion remove heavy metals and chlorine then use tap water and put water lotion then clean filters in fresh water.
My second question is, if you remove filter media from your filter, how you can keep them in tact out side of filter for use it later, because media that not used in filter will lose all good bacteria because of lack of air?
I am planning to get a Fluval407 for a 280ltr aquarium.
Can i place it next to the tank on the same level. ( not at the bottom)
Will there be any issue on in doing so?

Hello! Love this video from you with lot's of information! I just have one question... why do you put the fine filter pad after the biological media? I would put the fine filter pad directly after the course filter pad and then let the water go through the biological medium.

For the filter outflow and intake, why should they be on the same side of the tank? Wouldn't it make sense to be on the opposite side of the outflow? Or is there a reasoning behind it?
Yeah, flow comes in at the top, goes along the top to the other end, goes down to the bottom and comes back along the carpet to the suction side - in a oval shape.
@@GreenAquaShopThanks for the explanation!

Everything you need to know in 15 minutes for beginners and more
It is said that the flow rate is calculated by the amount of water x 5, but if BioMaster Thermo 600 is used for 60 ℓ, the flow rate is 1250 ℓ / h, so is it too strong?
I would be careful with looking just at the numbers. They can be deceiving. First of all the number written on the filters is never true. Not even at the beginning. When you have a filter that is older the flow rate is much much more lower. We never had a problem with too much flow in our 60P with the 600. I usually only close the tap on the pressure side hose at the beginning for the first few days.
Hello Green Aqua, could you make a video guide about water quality for planted tank ? all thing about water like PH,GH,TDS,O2,Co2 ....
Thanks for your suggestion, we'll consider it. Thx for watching too.
My phosphates in my aquarium come out a little high like 2.0 is that normal my tap also is the same
Just started setting up my first aquascape tank this month. Thank you for the informative videos. However, I find some disagreement about the effectivity of Seachem Matrix. I’ve seen data where the foam media that comes with the Oase’ 600 Biomaster actually supports more beneficial bacteria than Matrix. The micrographs of Matrix show an amazing micro-porous structure but as a practical matter, the pore size is too small for bacteria to get inside and coat the surface. So actual biological colony size is greater with foam.
Thats an amazing observation. Do you have maybe link for this study ? I`d love to dive deep into it.
Do you need a filter if there are no fish in the tank?

In my opinion canister filters are just an expensive Hamburg Matten filter. Don't get me wrong, when you have beautiful showtanks like these in the videos, a canister filter is a good option, or a sump. But the general public doesn't have aquariums looking that crisp. I too used to work with canister filters, for well over 20 years, but about a year ago discovered the many advantages of the Hamburg Matten filter. And yes, you can add all sorts of media behind it, and even as much as you wish. One disadvantage: it does take a bit of space in your tank, but if you have a big tank (75 gallon and above) that bit of space the Hamburg Matten filter takes in is negligible. Tip: when installing the Hamburger Matten filter on the side of your aquarium: paint that part black with a layer or two acrylic paint, so that it's out of sight.
Cheers.
Thanks for that feedback, much appreciated. Well, our main goal is that the "general public" goes and makes beautiful and crisp planted tanks. 😉
But I like your "blah blah" lol.
👍💓👍
Lol, thanks ShelbyRae! 🙏🏻
ok you are rich 👍
I abandoned canister\media filters decades ago. Too much work to keep clean, unclogged, and serviced. If you want to take all the work out of maintaining an aquarium, just go straight to a wet\dry system. You get better filtration, more media space, a LOT more flow, better oxygenation, and can also serve as a breeding sanctuary. Even makes water changes easier, if plumbed properly. The only con is that it takes up space, but, if you are serious about your tanks, the space is negligible.
There are many good solutions to filtration, thanks for sharing yours. My filter at home (there's a video on this channel on it - the last one) already goes for 5 months without cleaning. Our round tank at Green Aqua at the entrance is on for 14 months not, no cleaning. ;P If you have the proper size filter and you don't overpopulate, you'll save on cleaning too.
