There are many horrifying and creepy elements within the WoT series, but the whole concept behind the damane and what's done to them still took the cake for most disturbing. Not because of over-the-top creepy costume factor, which is what they're going for here, but the fact that damane were totally stripped of personhood and brainwashed into truly believing that they needed to be leashed was absolutely horrifying to me. Not to mention the creepy relationship the sul'dam have with them: they'll torture the hell out the damane should they make a mistake, but they'll throw hands with anyone that criticizes their damane. And then they might pet and soothe their damane afterwards, tie a bow in their hair, and take them out for walks. Seriously.
EXACTLY. It was such absolute cultural whiplash! Th Damane were dangerous pets to the Sul Dam and to everyone else absolute monstrous tools of war. It is a really cool and terrifying change of perspective especially up until their introduction female changeless were well respected women. And as Aes Seda almost walking demi-Gods, they had so much (intentional) mystery and intrigue around them...to see them reduced to that and in eventually turned entirely turned into it, fighting with people who tried to free them is an underrated mind fuck that was extremely well done. This....looks cool but doesn't have anywhere the same impact. Especially when the mightiest Empire starts of absolutely DECIMATING some poor child playing on the beach lmao. What did she do?!?!
the book literally said they destroyed coastal villages very quickly. A tsunami is an epic replacement for lighting bolts across villages, which was overused imo in the second book.

This is like an 18th level wizard in D&D using a Meteor Swarm on a 1st level goon with a knife. About the only thing they didn't have happen here was the little girl smiling and waving at the ships before the tsunami obliterated her like my hopes and dreams.
One of my main issues with this season is how they wrote Rand's personality. What happened with the awkward, friendly farmer guy? This Rand is just an ass to everyone. Would make more sense if he was like this after the madness had taken hold on him, maybe after the raid on Caemlyn.

The scene is trashy, expensive looking and trashy. I am tired of seeing obviously expensive scenes that look like they were written by a 4 year old with ADHD. True worth is intelligence, vision and artistry. You cannot take a piece of garbage writing and dress it up into greatness with cgi.
I actually watched this in parallel to the Allied fleet arrival at 'The Longest Day', switching at the appropriate moments. Way better that tzunaming the little girl.
I'm not a fan of the armor design and the scene itself doesn't make much sense, sending a tidal wave as a show of power would make sense if it was targeted at a town or a navy, not when the only person who can see it is a little girl on the beach who won't even live to tell people about it. BUT, I am a fan of the music and how well the scene captures how creepy, weird, and evil the Seanchan are.
Tidal waves can flood for miles inland. But yes, instead of an isolated beach there should have been a town or city there to have a bit more impact. Budget issues I suppose.

@@Nepthu The reason why I think Seanchan, Whitecloaks, and Red Ajah are such great villains is because they don’t see themselves as the villains even when they do horrible things. Their ignorance and superstition eventually lead them into being easily influenced by Darkfriends and indirectly becoming the Dark Ones unknowing pawns.

To show these forces are a threat, the show decides to make them "pure evil". I guess this could work if it would be consistent with how the Seanchan will act in the future. They *cannot* change their approach, which is to first greet strangers and ask if they're still a part of the empire, and first after a negative answer "reinstate" them into the empire. This would be beyond silly to change. So, having them send a tsunami toward a little girl is nonsensical. Viewers *do* care about logic and having things make sense.
Perhaps the offer was already made, in their view, before this, off screen. But that’s not the point of this scene, is it? Those ships are miles offshore. Logically speaking, they probably have no idea the girl’s even there. She is a collateral casualty of the Seanchan’s opening attack, not the intended target.
@@Highbrowser Even as an attack, it's illogical. A huge tsunami on an empty beach, still too small to topple over the mountains behind it? I also feel that it was a bit too powerful. Oh well, there are not many waterfights coming up so I guess they're not gonna have to nerf it. Like they're gonna have to do when fighting trollocs - not so much suspense if a small group of channelers can wipe out tens of thousands of trollocs.
I assumed that Falme is behind the cliffs. We know that the harbour around Falme is surrounded by high cliff slopes, and there does seems to be a gap there. So I believe they sent that wave against Falme, not an empty beach. There's something that might be a tower of the Watchers over the Waves visible.

I'm really hoping Brandon Sanderson gets back on board giving feedback on the episodes. Apparently the two last episodes were the only ones that he didn't get to give feedback on. I believe it was due to covid messing up the production schedule in a major way.
Watched the first couple of episodes, stopped at loial turning up, then picked it up recently. This seanchan introduction with the girl on the beach as with a lot of things in the series just shows how little the show runners have thought about things making sense and how it’s going to be perceived by others.
The showrunner responded to questions about this scene recently, stating that the wave is also an attack on the cities along this shore. That makes this scene way more understandable, I just think the show should have at least shown a city in the background to communicate this.
They made a new harbor for landing. So as not to use others already existing. It's also just the teachings of a damane or a whim of the Shonchan nobleman "Make a wave!"

I agree. The problem, is that the Sharans are both evil and black, ruled by a single white guy. I'm saying that Shara will only be referenced in a line or two of throwaway dialog. Valda and Asunawa were combined into a single character that looked and acted like neither of them. There is a great chance the Seanchan are going to represent "The codified enslavement and abuse done to women that is upheld by society when their suffering is ignored or even accepted." The good guy Aes Sedai will fight the bad guy Seanchan to end slavery, and the showrunner will part themselves on the back for putting a "slavery is bad" message in the show. Mark my words.

For the most part, they have the Gai'Shain, who are only kept as servants for a year and a day, according to their customs of Ji'e'toh, their complex system of honor and dishonor. Jordan doesn't go out of his way to defend slavery as a practice. The Aiel themselves are revealed to have a dark secret, and when they learn of it, it totally disrupts their society.
What an inconsistent and ludicrous beginning to the Seanchan - who generally approach, demand fealty and only attack if refused. They expect fealty because they see themselves are rescuers and saviors, not invaders. I'd have thought any director with half a brain could have put that child on the crest of that cove and a township with soldiers standing defiantly on the shore, a dead Seanchan ambassador at their feet - and the wave coming for them. THAT would have told a better and more logical story with the child as the only survivor.
What was the point of killing one little girl? I guess they were trying to subvert expectations or some such nonsense. If you love how GOT ended, you'll love this adaptation of Wheel of Time.
Well, I guess this was the forerunners before the forerunners in the book, since a) they're arriving way to early, and b) the backwash of that Tsunami they just created would sink that fleet.
The Weaves are not tied off, so they can presumably prevent backwash. Also, this is exactly when Turak leads the Hailene to Falme, it's already conquered in Book 2.

Attacking an all but empty shoreline. Tactical genius right there. It's like someone in the Seanchan fleet command watched Monty Python's The Search for the Holy Grail, saw the killer bunny rabbit scene and thought "Ooh, I'm not gonna make that mistake!" Seriously tho', the minds of the story writers have as much going on as that shoreline.
Hoping that they stick to the book for the 2nd season. Watching the 1st season makes me less hopeful for the great battle at the end of The Great Hunt which I am very excited to see since the 90s
@@Alejojojo6 I would say the change of the battle with Trollocs illustrates better that people shouldn't expect them to stick too close to the source. It was something Rand did, but they just had to give it to the women, with Egwene bringing Nynaeve back to life after the latter burned herself out. So we better expect those two to take over again and possibly fight Ba'alzamon instead of Rand.
I think they've changed the design a bit as they did with several things in season 1. The Sul'dam it looks like are wearing golden bracelets similar in design to the gags and those golden things on their neck and shoulders. I assume that is the a'dam, they've just removed the chain from the movie verson for whatever reason.
Leashes would not go over well in today’s age. BDSM gags already push the envelope. Leading women around like dogs would see this show brigades and cancelled in an instant by those who wouldn’t bother to understand the context or how the story is definitely painting them as bad guys

We only see the foredeck, how can you tell the ship is too small? Ocean going sailing ships often weren't as big as we think, btw. Twenty meters was large enough for Columbus to cross the atlantic.
What was the logic behind this scene to create a giant tsumani on an empty beach with mountains on it blocking the water from reaching anything beyond the beach????
Cool visuals was the only logic... alas that's how many shows and movies are done nowadays. They could place there some fleet defending the coast or some city walls that tsunami is to break. Still WoT is not the worst culprit here. It didn't feel so absolutely stupid as Rings of Power, which is probably the result of WoT still being based in big part on books, instead of being 99% fun fiction based on a couple of sentences like RoP or being made by the team which regularly ignores or distorts source material like it is in case of The Witcher.
I don't know why not having a chain or leash bothers me but it does. you're supposed to paint a picture of who these people are. With a chain on the A'dam it drives home the point that they are not humane in our eyes. Instead, you're giving us a show produced for the most sensitive person in the audience. I read all of the books. the only reason why I'm watching the show is that I loved the series. If I didn't read them and started watching this show, I would have turned it off at the season's mid-point or earlier.

Such a weird choice. The Seanchan are pretty peaceful at first in the books. Their culture has aspects that are really messed up but when they came to take the continent they just showed up, asked the residents that they will protect and govern them now and kept civilian casualties to a minimum. They want to rule and govern, spread their culture not destroy.
What is even the point of conjuring a tsunami on an empty shore that has a mountain range right behind it? That, and those ships are kind of embarassing to sail around on. And the choreography reminds me of those silly power ranger shows. Hopefully this show doesn't disappoint like the Witcher S2.

Considering the show they are in, nobody important. They are supposed to be Seanchan, invaders from across the ocean that use women who can channel as weapons. But, this is Wheel of Thrones, so, they'll probably de wiped out by Egwene and Nyneave in one shot. Not worth worrying about. In the mean time, Rand will probably cry in a corner, while Perrin plays with his toy axe, and Mat.....well, who knows, maybe he'll dice himself to death and we'll have a third Mat for season 3.
The Seanchan Empire, who lives in the continent on the other side of the ocean. 1000years ago, all the Westlands were conquered by Arthur Hawkwing, a conqueror like alexander the great who sent some of his sons with a fleet across the ocean. When Arthur died, the empire collapse, but his sons on the other side of the ocean endured and managed to create their own empire. Now they are coming back to conquer their native lands (after a power struggle in their native empire). In this empire, the Aes sedai are slaves (Damane) and channel through their master's orders (Sul'dam) through a collar tied with a chain (the a'dam) however, here they dont have the chain...
Well, Rafe, for fucking up yet another thing from my favourite series. Oh hey, lets turned the leashed ones into ball and gagged ones, lets have them show up and flood a beach in the middle of nowhere for no reason where there is just one little girl, my god did you even read the series at all? How can you screw up and get so many things wrong? What a waste of time and money. What was so wrong with the descriptions in the book? Did you really need change every single thing that made the books so great in the first place?
Oh FFS here comes all the winers!! It's a epic fantasy series with thousands and thousands of pages with unbelievable complexity. True fan's will always love the books. A TV adaptation was always going to be a big ask. Can we not all just chill out and relish in seeing some of the characters and story arch's come to life instead of tearing it to shreds at every little small thing! Love the SENCHAN :) Great Intro. The problem is that these are meant to be the most competent military forces in the world. And they send a tidal wave... at a single child... while using enough of the one power to alert _every channeler in a 100-mile radius._ The issue isn't _that_ these stories are getting adapted, it's that the _execution_ is uncomfortably disjointed. Even with the rampant issues that Covid and episode cuts caused, these are extremely basic aspects of storytelling that just keep coming out mangled. As for the story arcs, they're great to see _when they're actually included in the bloody show._
The episode was disappointing. The battle between rand and the dark one was too short and the moraine was left powerless... Lan had nothing to do in the whole episode so does perrin. I mean are you kidding me this is the most disappointing finale ever. I thought GOT had the worst finale but WOT proved me wrong.
Yeah that whole forsaken and rand fight was short. But was that the dark one though or was it balzamon? The show is going for a vastly different storyline than the books which I am thinking they put on multiple books in one season. 😐 Idk

😂that's one viewpoint at least. The simplest one. Not saying it's bad, just as literally simple as anyone can figure out. But what if...the real target of the tidal wave is not the girl, but the coast itself? This would lay waste to the west coast's navy, army and whatnot, which could be on the unseen area of the coastline. Waves that big don't just affect a small area. This is the Hailene and it's aim is to secure a foothold on the mainland. A display of power can quickly stop refusals/rebellions and High Lord Turak Aladon if he's here...delights in playing with his food.

They totally disregarded the logic, limitations, rules, and difficulties of one power. Finally, the biggest problem is the awful story-telling. I have never watched such a rushed and distracting storyline. I'm tired of seeing the almost-crying face of Egwene (who was a bull-headed strong young woman in the books). They dedicated whole episodes to unnecessary details, yet they told the awakening of the dragon in 15 seconds! What about logical mistakes for the sake of sjw crap? Two rivers is a village isolated from the rest of the world for hundreds of years. A few hundred people, mating with each other for generations.. But village folk in the show was as if they are from a video clip of Michael Jackson.. Every race and ethnicity represented. It is ridiculous! The first season should have been at least be 12-13 episodes. They should have eliminated unnecassary material and told the material they choose more slowly, gradually building up the story. If they did this, no one would complain changes to the book. But their changes are meaningless. The witer of the show should just give up writing stories and find a new profession.

The books are full of action and suspense and adventure, the show was just walking and talking. Other issues too, but that was my main thing. I don't mind changes from the book per se (they are inevitable), just for the most part they were changes substantially for the worse.

Now they are coming back to conquer their native lands (after a power struggle in their native empire). In this empire, the Aes sedai are slaves(Damane) and channel through their master's orders(Sul'dam) through a chain and collar (the a'dam). However, here they dont have the chain...

There are many horrifying and creepy elements within the WoT series, but the whole concept behind the damane and what's done to them still took the cake for most disturbing. Not because of over-the-top creepy costume factor, which is what they're going for here, but the fact that damane were totally stripped of personhood and brainwashed into truly believing that they needed to be leashed was absolutely horrifying to me. Not to mention the creepy relationship the sul'dam have with them: they'll torture the hell out the damane should they make a mistake, but they'll throw hands with anyone that criticizes their damane. And then they might pet and soothe their damane afterwards, tie a bow in their hair, and take them out for walks. Seriously.
EXACTLY. It was such absolute cultural whiplash! Th Damane were dangerous pets to the Sul Dam and to everyone else absolute monstrous tools of war. It is a really cool and terrifying change of perspective especially up until their introduction female changeless were well respected women. And as Aes Seda almost walking demi-Gods, they had so much (intentional) mystery and intrigue around them...to see them reduced to that and in eventually turned entirely turned into it, fighting with people who tried to free them is an underrated mind fuck that was extremely well done.

One of my main issues with this season is how they wrote Rand's personality. What happened with the awkward, friendly farmer guy? This Rand is just an ass to everyone. Would make more sense if he was like this after the madness had taken hold on him, maybe after the raid on Caemlyn.

Congratulations you killed a small child 👏. This scene is cool in concept but dumb in execution they should have put a village or city in the background or hell even a enemy ship.
The scene is trashy, expensive looking and trashy. I am tired of seeing obviously expensive scenes that look like they were written by a 4 year old with ADHD. True worth is intelligence, vision and artistry. You cannot take a piece of garbage writing and dress it up into greatness with cgi.
I actually watched this in parallel to the Allied fleet arrival at 'The Longest Day', switching at the appropriate moments. Way better that tzunaming the little girl.
I'm not a fan of the armor design and the scene itself doesn't make much sense, sending a tidal wave as a show of power would make sense if it was targeted at a town or a navy, not when the only person who can see it is a little girl on the beach who won't even live to tell people about it.
BUT, I am a fan of the music and how well the scene captures how creepy, weird, and evil the Seanchan are.
Tidal waves can flood for miles inland. But yes, instead of an isolated beach there should have been a town or city there to have a bit more impact. Budget issues I suppose.
And... the Seanchan aren't evil. They are conquerors, yes; but they are absolutely needed to fight in Tarmon Gai'don.

Their ignorance and superstition eventually lead them into being easily influenced by Darkfriends and indirectly becoming the Dark Ones unknowing pawns.

To show these forces are a threat, the show decides to make them "pure evil". I guess this could work if it would be consistent with how the Seanchan will act in the future. They *cannot* change their approach, which is to first greet strangers and ask if they're still a part of the empire, and first after a negative answer "reinstate" them into the empire. This would be beyond silly to change. So, having them send a tsunami toward a little girl is nonsensical. Viewers *do* care about logic and having things make sense.
Perhaps the offer was already made, in their view, before this, off screen. But that’s not the point of this scene, is it? Those ships are miles offshore. Logically speaking, they probably have no idea the girl’s even there. She is a collateral casualty of the Seanchan’s opening attack, not the intended target.

I assumed that Falme is behind the cliffs. We know that the harbour around Falme is surrounded by high cliff slopes, and there does seems to be a gap there. So I believe they sent that wave against Falme, not an empty beach. There's something that might be a tower of the Watchers over the Waves visible.

Watched the first couple of episodes, stopped at loial turning up, then picked it up recently. This seanchan introduction with the girl on the beach as with a lot of things in the series just shows how little the show runners have thought about things making sense and how it’s going to be perceived by others.
Exactly, they would never hurt or kill innocent people, just make them swear the oaths. Normal people under their rule had it better than others.
The showrunner responded to questions about this scene recently, stating that the wave is also an attack on the cities along this shore. That makes this scene way more understandable, I just think the show should have at least shown a city in the background to communicate this.
They made a new harbor for landing. So as not to use others already existing. It's also just the teachings of a damane or a whim of the Shonchan nobleman "Make a wave!"

There is a great chance the Seanchan are going to represent "The codified enslavement and abuse done to women that is upheld by society when their suffering is ignored or even accepted." The good guy Aes Sedai will fight the bad guy Seanchan to end slavery, and the showrunner will part themselves on the back for putting a "slavery is bad" message in the show.

What an inconsistent and ludicrous beginning to the Seanchan - who generally approach, demand fealty and only attack if refused. They expect fealty because they see themselves are rescuers and saviors, not invaders.
I'd have thought any director with half a brain could have put that child on the crest of that cove and a township with soldiers standing defiantly on the shore, a dead Seanchan ambassador at their feet - and the wave coming for them. THAT would have told a better and more logical story with the child as the only survivor.

The Weaves are not tied off, so they can presumably prevent backwash. Also, this is exactly when Turak leads the Hailene to Falme, it's already conquered in Book 2.

Hoping that they stick to the book for the 2nd season. Watching the 1st season makes me less hopeful for the great battle at the end of The Great Hunt which I am very excited to see since the 90s

@@Alejojojo6 I would say the change of the battle with Trollocs illustrates better that people shouldn't expect them to stick too close to the source. It was something Rand did, but they just had to give it to the women, with Egwene bringing Nynaeve back to life after the latter burned herself out. So we better expect those two to take over again and possibly fight Ba'alzamon instead of Rand.

I think they've changed the design a bit as they did with several things in season 1. The Sul'dam it looks like are wearing golden bracelets similar in design to the gags and those golden things on their neck and shoulders. I assume that is the a'dam, they've just removed the chain from the movie verson for whatever reason.
Leashes would not go over well in today’s age. BDSM gags already push the envelope. Leading women around like dogs would see this show brigades and cancelled in an instant by those who wouldn’t bother to understand the context or how the story is definitely painting them as bad guys

- ships are waaaay too small - in line with coastal galleys rather high seas galleon like vessel
- costumes looks strange but lets give them a pass, but where are the leashes on those damane?
- making tsunami on empty beach makes no sense at all, it would be ok in combat, but saenchan are generally very good for conquered population if they swear oath and dont kill without reason

What was the logic behind this scene to create a giant tsumani on an empty beach with mountains on it blocking the water from reaching anything beyond the beach????
Cool visuals was the only logic... alas that's how many shows and movies are done nowadays. They could place there some fleet defending the coast or some city walls that tsunami is to break. Still WoT is not the worst culprit here. It didn't feel so absolutely stupid as Rings of Power, which is probably the result of WoT still being based in big part on books, instead of being 99% fun fiction based on a couple of sentences like RoP or being made by the team which regularly ignores or distorts source material like it is in case of The Witcher.

The ships look so small
I don't know why not having a chain or leash bothers me but it does. you're supposed to paint a picture of who these people are. With a chain on the A'dam it drives home the point that they are not humane in our eyes. Instead, you're giving us a show produced for the most sensitive person in the audience.
I read all of the books. the only reason why I'm watching the show is that I loved the series. If I didn't read them and started watching this show, I would have turned it off at the season's mid-point or earlier.

Such a weird choice. The Seanchan are pretty peaceful at first in the books. Their culture has aspects that are really messed up but when they came to take the continent they just showed up, asked the residents that they will protect and govern them now and kept civilian casualties to a minimum. They want to rule and govern, spread their culture not destroy.

What is even the point of conjuring a tsunami on an empty shore that has a mountain range right behind it? That, and those ships are kind of embarassing to sail around on. And the choreography reminds me of those silly power ranger shows. Hopefully this show doesn't disappoint like the Witcher S2.

Considering the show they are in, nobody important. They are supposed to be Seanchan, invaders from across the ocean that use women who can channel as weapons. But, this is Wheel of Thrones, so, they'll probably de wiped out by Egwene and Nyneave in one shot. Not worth worrying about. In the mean time, Rand will probably cry in a corner, while Perrin plays with his toy axe, and Mat.....well, who knows, maybe he'll dice himself to death and we'll have a third Mat for season 3.

Well, Rafe, for fucking up yet another thing from my favourite series. Oh hey, lets turned the leashed ones into ball and gagged ones, lets have them show up and flood a beach in the middle of nowhere for no reason where there is just one little girl, my god did you even read the series at all? How can you screw up and get so many things wrong? What a waste of time and money. What was so wrong with the descriptions in the book? Did you really need change every single thing that made the books so great in the first place?
Oh FFS here comes all the winers!! It's a epic fantasy series with thousands and thousands of pages with unbelievable complexity. True fan's will always love the books. A TV adaptation was always going to be a big ask. Can we not all just chill out and relish in seeing some of the characters and story arch's come to life instead of tearing it to shreds at every little small thing! Love the SENCHAN :) Great Intro. Also loving Nnynave :)

The problem is that these are meant to be the most competent military forces in the world.
And they send a tidal wave... at a single child... while using enough of the one power to alert _every channeler in a 100-mile radius._
The issue isn't _that_ these stories are getting adapted, it's that the _execution_ is uncomfortably disjointed. Even with the rampant issues that Covid and episode cuts caused, these are extremely basic aspects of storytelling that just keep coming out mangled.
As for the story arcs, they're great to see _when they're actually included in the bloody show._

The episode was disappointing. The battle between rand and the dark one was too short and the moraine was left powerless... Lan had nothing to do in the whole episode so does perrin. I mean are you kidding me this is the most disappointing finale ever. I thought GOT had the worst finale but WOT proved me wrong.
Yeah that whole forsaken and rand fight was short. But was that the dark one though or was it balzamon? The show is going for a vastly different storyline than the books which I am thinking they put on multiple books in one season. 😐 Idk

😂that's one viewpoint at least. The simplest one. Not saying it's bad, just as literally simple as anyone can figure out.
But what if...the real target of the tidal wave is not the girl, but the coast itself? This would lay waste to the west coast's navy, army and whatnot, which could be on the unseen area of the coastline. Waves that big don't just affect a small area.
This is the Hailene and it's aim is to secure a foothold on the mainland. A display of power can quickly stop refusals/rebellions and High Lord Turak Aladon if he's here...delights in playing with his food.

They totally disregarded the logic, limitations, rules, and difficulties of one power. Finally, the biggest problem is the awful story-telling. I have never watched such a rushed and distracting storyline. I'm tired of seeing the almost-crying face of Egwene (who was a bull-headed strong young woman in the books). They dedicated whole episodes to unnecessary details, yet they told the awakening of the dragon in 15 seconds! What about logical mistakes for the sake of sjw crap? Two rivers is a village isolated from the rest of the world for hundreds of years. A few hundred people, mating with each other for generations.. But village folk in the show was as if they are from a video clip of Michael Jackson.. Every race and ethnicity represented. It is ridiculous!
The first season should have been at least be 12-13 episodes. They should have eliminated unnecassary material and told the material they choose more slowly, gradually building up the story. If they did this, no one would complain changes to the book. But their changes are meaningless. The witer of the show should just give up writing stories and find a new profession.

The books are full of action and suspense and adventure, the show was just walking and talking. Other issues too, but that was my main thing. I don't mind changes from the book per se (they are inevitable), just for the most part they were changes substantially for the worse.
