I've mentioned this before and I tell all my apprentices to please, please, please wear a mask under your hood! You even said that the ventilation system wasn't strong enough for those fumes. I'm a 55 yr old UA Instructor that's on long term disability because I've been welding since I was 16 and never, never wore a mask under my hood. I've been diagnosed with Manganese Poisoning because of all the crap that's enrobed on the rods. (Google it. It's exactly like Parkinson's and read the caution on the rod box.). And I tell all the apprentices to wear them. I challenge you and all the other teachers to do the same. I'm lucky because I've been Union all my life so I'm protected Insurance wise and no, I'm not going on a Union or non-Union rant. I'm going on a protect your future rant. Wear a mask. It's not that hard.

I used to repair the big cast pieces where the anchor chain comes out of the ship. (Ageis destroyers for the United States Navy bath iron works shipyard in Maine). They would ut the cast pieces and sometimes find sand pockets. I would gouge out and clean the pockets then preheat to 200 degrees and then fill it back in with 1/16 100s wire with 95/5 gas on pulse arc mode. We ran Miller 356 inverters that Miller had custom programmed them for all processes. Including a 1/16 100s pulse mode. After it all passed ut I then hardfaced where the chain rubbed with the same wire. Great video. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

I think that neat swirl pattern is because with small amounts of fluid like little drops of water the fluid tension keeps it pulled together, but once you get enough of a fluid together it can run like a river and not be constrained into small round shapes by surface tension.

In all my years, I never saw anybody put a hand on the rod, while welding, but I have seen bigger electrodes before ... in the melt shop of 😛the steel mill, as they entered the pot ... in fact, they used 3 of them, about 12" in diameter. Nice video, guys

I had a job working with 7/32 and 1/4 inch big steel slab on the stop part of the coiler of an 86" hot strip mill. I welded about a 15 degree uphill. You have to watch the slag and steel flipping off the rod. On 3/4 inch plate this wouldn't work. But, on 16 inch x 84 inch weld with welding going on steady for 16 - 24 hours it surely was a lot of full penetration depending on your rod blowing off the rod. the slag peeled off all the time. I burned up double ply welding gloves every hour or so and burned up several stingers.

I know this is an automated process on the norm, but I’m just thinking here. The puddle is like water. If you had control over the voltage, you could dry the puddle up and possibly have more control and fewer discontinuities. Just a thought. I know nothing about this electrode or the flux composition, just considering basic SMAW arc characteristics. Any insight on this?
