  • Day five of Gaucho week: Time Out Of Mind.
In stark contrast to the complex bass lines of Gaucho and Glamour Profession, Walter Becker keeps it extremely simple here. Not content to simply steer clear of the downbeat in each bar, he lays off the first bar of each verse entirely, before semi-popping the A string on the "and" of the second downbeat. These light pops are present throughout the song, leaving no doubt that a Fender Precision was used here.
I elected to keep a pick handy for the instrumental bridge. Just about made it.
I've always had a particular fondness for Steely Dan's bridges. I could listen to this one in particular on loop and be happy for a good, long while.
My favorite musical detail in this song is Michael McDonald's wailing in the prechorus immediately following the bridge. And the way he and the rest of the background singers sing "per-FECT-ion" in absolute dead-on perfect time. Just so elegant.
Recorded at home with my 1973 Precision and @avalondesignusa U5. One whole take, captured with my Canon M50. Enjoy!

genius of a bass player, i would have never thought about the pick part, i wonder how many bass players they used on tracks just like guitarists? my guess it was Walter on the pick parts.

Walter played bass on this tasty track, but Anthony Jackson and Chuck Rainey also contributed to the Gaucho album. Check out my whole Gaucho playlist here: ua-cam.com/video/HIQt-tqfXHc/v-deo.html

Masterful, as always, and that bridge always floors me. In the UK we have a band called Nearly Dan who are simply incredible and they open with this tune. All extremely good musicians who adore SD.

@@LarsErikDahle the drummer is Brian Hargreaves who has played with major pop acts in the UK and is a course leader at a big national music school in Manchester. A good mate of mine was also one of the drum teachers there. Brian is highly regarded.

Other than the bridge (which I so love), my favorite thing about this part is it's such a great lesson of the power of space. It helps to create such a great hook here and one of the best grooves the Dan ever wrote. BTW, I always thought it was Chuck Rainey playing, but just found out it was Becker all along. Nice Walter, RIP.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Especially love the switch to using a pick. Very Steely Dan to be so specific.
It’s a really tasteful bass line, not too busy. It avoids stepping on toes during the bridge when there are a lot of complex changes going on. All in the rhythm.

Grymt bra som vanligt! Ock en klart svårspelad låt det här också. Vilket proffs!

Tusen takk, Olle 😊 Denne er mye lettere enn Glamour Profession, Walter holder jo tyst i hver annen takt 😂
