Loved how your entire body was in Purdie's pocket throughout the song. What Steely Dan produced over the years is simply some of the best music ever and you did justice to an awesome song. Long live Walter Becker!
Wonderful interpretation Lars.. Some people get so caught up on replicating these improvised bass lines that they lose the enjoyment of just playing the song how THEY feel it should be played and making it their own. I am not Chuck Rainey and neither is anyone else and none of us share the exact same style. This video proves you can cover and song and do it justice in your own style.. Superb!
Thanks, Jon. I totally agree. There's a lot to learn from listening and analysis, but for me, the real learning and growing always comes from digging in and making the material my own. Chuck's style is structured but with a lot of room to breathe and improvise, so all of his takes were probably pretty unique. This was my take, and I'm glad you liked it 😊
Chuck once said he nailed this solo in one take as he was feeling flush with success due to his other successful session work and quite confident in himself. You've done a remarkable job here emulating his playing. Love it.
Hmmm....Steely Dan had a reputation for MANY takes in the studio....(take 307!) I think Rainey is the best, but NO WAY he did this on the first or second takes.
Wow, I never heard of this song. It sounds like this song has everything you'd want in a bass line! Also, you have the perfect roundwound precision bass sound! Sounds great!
Great job on one of my favorite songs of all time! I loved how you were obviously having a blast playing it, and you were so in the groove throughout. That's a gorgeous P bass, too!
Very, very tastefully done.. while Kid C is greatly praised for Larry's solo (which is amazing), the syncapation between Bernard and Chuck is just breathtaking.. reason in itself to subscribe! Would love to hear you cover Walter's 'Snowbound', one of the bass lines ever released!
Love this track. Snowbound would be a nice challenge, I love that kind of soft slapping technique. I'm not sure I have the right bass for it, but I'll put it on my list for the future 😊
@@LarsErikDahle Snowbound is one of my favourites, so many little nuances in it, like Glamour Profession and Kid Charlemagne, it's a song in itself. I can't believe that the great Nathan East covered it (as part of the group Fourplay) but smooth jazzed the whole affair :( Anyway, thanks for the many hours of listening pleasure, you're clearly a perfectionist in what you do.
I'm glad I could inspire you 😊 Do it, get an electric. It's still bass, but a different flavor. I mainly play acoustic, but I have an upright for special occations.
Lars - This is so damn groovy and happening. Unbelievable what you have done with this one! Any chance you transcribed to sheet music and would care to share? Would love to cover, of course with due acknowledgment. Thanks!
Breathtaking! Thanks for sharing!!! On a gear-related note, I'm glad you got a good '74 P-Bass. I bought one brand-new in late '74 and it was a terrible instrument, the neck was never right. I was too young and naive to have Fender fix it under warranty.
There are great ones and duds in every vintage. To me, it's more about chemistry than anything. It either feels like it's my bass or it doesn't. This one really feels like it was made for me.
Diggin’ it! Chuck Rainey will too... would have preferred a bit more of your excellent bass chops in my headphones (also- where is Michael MxDonald’s b.g. vocals at the end of the track?). Look fwd to more of your bass Lars!
putting aside the incredible performance, the tone you're getting out of that P-bass is pretty much exactly the ideal bass tone. I would love to know what your signal path is from the strings, pickups to the DAW?
Thanks, man! It's been a while since I made that video, but as far as I can remember, the setup was pretty much what it is now. P-bass with old D'Addario rounds, Avalon U5 DI, Apollo Twin into Logic. Light compression and maybe a bit of top end from the stock EQ if the song calls for it.
Still mind blown by this one take masterpiece. Of all the bass covers on YT.. this is #1 to me. Yours sits in the pocket and does what a bass should do.. almost become invisible to the song.. know what I mean? Even while being that busy. It's because you play with a dynamic range that is very hard to do.. because it's touch not technical... Every finger sound, every note should have it's own degree of playability to it. And how lines are put together.. the variations of how hard or soft you apply to them... know what I'm saying? It's also recorded and mixed PERFECTLY. Anyway I'm considering learning this for my channel and just Googled a bunch and yours still stands out. Bravo (question - did you somehow 'take out' the original bass line? Your title said 'Multitrack' and now that I think of it.. it seems like your bassline is the only one there...?)
Thank you so much. Truly appreciate your comments. I like to learn the tunes by ear and try to figure out the blueprint of the bass part. I don't copy every note, but try to recreate the track in my own way, with inspiration from the original. I'm so glad you liked my take on an already amazing tune. This was my first bass cover video. I found the stems (drums/keys/vox/bass/guitars) somewhere online, and had so much fun grooving to those that I had to record it. Nowadays, I remove the bass track using Spleeter. Bass covers sound so messy when the original bass is still in the mix, and Spleeter does the trick.
@@LarsErikDahle I’m here again to watch this and I think you could have recorded with Steely Dan and it would have been seamless for this record.. cheers man and thanks for the idea of the software. I need to get hip to that.
Real time lesson on why the PBass was then, & remains today, the studio standard. With flat wounds, nothing approaches that sound. I have to roll off the mids just to get close.

Haha, thanks for asking. In Norway, most people keep their wedding band on their right ring finger. I used to wear my grandfather's old wedding band on my left hand for symmetry 😊
Lars-Erik Dahle When I married again just over 5 years ago, I found that my late Father’s wedding band fit me perfectly. It’s an honor to wear it (on the left hand of course, as we Americans do). By the way, I absolutely love your playing. Your style, technique and presence are among the best I’ve seen. Keep up the great work!
@@hellofromrob Thank you so much. Means a lot in these tough times. Funny you should say that, I stopped wearing my grandfather's band when I got divorced 9 years ago in order to avoid sending mixed signals 😂 I keep it in a safe place.
I vacillate about my favorite song. My brother was huge on this one and it finally grew on me more. Every instrument in the song is as perfect as you could hope for in a song. The bass blends in a little too much for me to follow for practice and its frustrating for me. The way it walks and struts is to me what carries the song and I don't mean that the guitar isn't killer because it obviously is. One of my more favorite songs for bass guitar.
@@LarsErikDahle I guess I did. Hahah. I don't why I commented that originally. It sounds great now coming back to this video. Great bass playing. Maybe I wasn't wearing headphones at the time and my computer audio is shitty so I couldn't hear the bass? Not sure
