Jamel! Steely Dan! Way to go, man! The "Can't Buy a Thrill" album has a cut called Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me. Steel guitars from a decidedly urban jazz-based band. And this song is almost impossible to sing unless your vocal range is HUGE!
"Can't Buy a Thrill" was so dimensional as a debut album. You could see them dabbling with different sounds/styles. With "Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me" you get SD doing something that sounds like the Eagles and with "Reeling in the Years" something that hints at the Doobie Brothers. What's great about SD is how they use different sounds and styles like different notes. Each song stands alone but the body of work, in total, is a composition as well.
I think anything from TFF will work. I saw them on their first US tour in the 80's and again in about 2016 at the Greek Theater. They sounded even better in 2016.
Well, originally "chasing the dragon" was smoking opium (Sherlock Holmes was known to "chase the dragon" according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and that was written before there even WAS heroin). I do think with the line "water may change to cherry wine" we're talking about shooting heroin, though.
Guitar solo by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits ("Sultans of Swing"). He was not part of the jazz-fusion session players' gang that Steely Dan usually called upon, but his distinctive sound got him a call for this track.

typical SD lyrics sounds like just a wonderful romantic night on the town "I'm holding a mystical stone, it's direct from Lhasa" Black Tar heroin usually comes in a little ball or clump that looks like a pebble, and Lhasa as mentioned previously is in Tibet, which is a region known for the production of the drug. "Tonight when I chase the dragon" The heroin user never gets as big a euphoric trip as the first time. Therefore always taking more or purer dope to try to get that same high "The water may change to cherry wine" In order to smoke black tar heroin, you have to dilute it with water and create a paste which can be spread on the aluminum foil, almost the consistency of toothpaste which has a ruby color, similar to cherry wine. "The silver may change to gold" Once the substance is spread on the foil and heat is applied, the foil turns amber/golden from the burning of the drug, which creates the smoke, which is 'chased' by the user holding a hollow tube (like a straw) and inhaled. "Time out of mind" Many heroin users describe the feeling of using heroin as a complete escape from reality, almost like an out of body experience, hence the feeling of spending time out of one's own mind. "Son you better get ready for love" Heroin users almost exclusively express a love for this drug over any other. Most users develop what is called a "love affair with the needle" or whatever manner they choose to ingest it. They are just as tied to the drug as they are the means by which they use it. "Keep your eyes on the sky, put a dollar in the kitty, don't the moon look pretty" One of the effect of the 'high' of heroin is that the users eyes will roll back in their head (or upwards) as the drug lulls the body into almost a coma like state. Put a dollar in the kitty speaks to the inexpensive nature of the drug. Don't the moon look pretty is pretty much all the user can look at, since their eyes are rolling upwards.
My day is made whenever I watch your joy as you discover these great songs by great musicians. 'Chasing the dragon' refers to the ingestion of heroin by inhaling the vapors which result when the drug is heated-typically on tin-foil above a flame.

The song is about getting high. When he sings "Tonight when I chase the dragon" - "Chasing the dragon" means inhaling morphine, heroin, oxycodone, or opium, according to Wikipedia.

Hollee Golightlee Great duo!
Absolutely need Alan Parsons
Whenever I hear Sirus I automatically also hear "Introducing your champion Chicagoooooo Buuuuullllls!"
My day is made whenever I watch your joy as you discover these great songs by great musicians. 'Chasing the dragon' refers to the ingestion of heroin by inhaling the vapors which result when the drug is heated-typically on tin-foil above a flame.
Listen again, Jamel, you missed yer boy Michael McDonald on the backing vocals!
Plz. React to Harry Chapin cat's in the cradle. Classic. Always hits to close to home for me. Takes me to good place.
one of my favs. if you like a good groove Glamour Profession is for you.
great 4 min outro with sax and some slick guitar
Great reaction as usual. There's a song by them i'd like to see a reaction to. It's from the animated movie Heavy Metal and the song is True Companion. Has a lot of melodic guitar parts in it. Enjoy!😉😌
Glad someone explained "chasing the dragon". Kid Charlemagne also has those types of references.
Yes, that’s Michael McDonald in the background. Just a bonus ☺️
Glad you play Steely Dan music, they might have sublime messages.
Surprised he didn't catch Michael McDonald's background vocals
Steely Dan’s music is so crisp and clear that he should have heard Michael McDonald’s voice. Oh well there’s still more from Steely Dan that features McDonald’s voice.
Music cant get any better than this/ been a fan since 1975/ hipness personified!
In my teen's chasing the dragon had EVERYTHING to do with the poppy plant. I love the music but hate the lyrics. Peace to you and I LOVE your shirt that say's "TEACH PEACE"!!!
One of my favorite Steely songs. ❤
Could you do Judy Collins “Send in the Clowns”?
"But if I really say it... the radio won't play it... unless I lay it... between the lines!"
The song is about getting high. When he sings "Tonight when I chase the dragon" - "Chasing the dragon" means inhaling morphine, heroin, oxycodone, or opium, according to Wikipedia.
It's about shooting heroin. Water may change to cherry wine.
Perfection and grace!
It's just "Time out of Mind" not "MY mind"
Time. Out. Of. Mind.
Fantastic pic, BTW ;)
@@nitedrive2956 thanks! One of my old faves
^^^^ "(edited)" Bwahahahahaha!!!
Give him a break.
@@johnreesor1450 I am just correcting a mistake. He has made mistakes before and been corrected by viewers. Also it probably looks more pissy than it should because of the periods between each word, but that was just to help separate the words because the brain inserts extra words that it expects, so I tried to make it clearer.
