  • In this video I install a WEN 3417 Air Filtration System in the workshop. A couple of months ago I installed a DIY Mr. Cool unit for cool conditioned air in the workshop. Recently, I installed a DIY dust collection system so now we have dirty air in the workshop. Now we are installing the WEN 3417 Air Filtration System for clean air in the workshop. Hi Rick, Where the air blows out the front of the unit, it would seem that the air flow direction will only blow the dust back at you rather than thru the filters first. Would it work better in the other direction with the filters facing the work area. I have this mounted on a table top due to a low basement ceiling. Thanks

I have a Mr Cool Unit mounted on the opposite wall of my workshop. I mounted it so it discharges the clean air toward the Mr. Cool unit and creates a circular air motion throughout the workshop when both the Mr. Cool unit and the air filtration units are running.

Have you built any sort of filtration system over the Mr. Cool or are you just relying on this to keep the dust out of it?

Hey Tony - Thanks for the question! I haven't built a dedicated filtration system over the Mr. Cool unit. Instead, I'm relying on its built-in filtration to handle the dust and the WEN Air Filtration System. So far, it’s been doing a solid job, but I do make sure to clean the filters regularly, especially since dust can build up quickly in a workshop. I’m also considering adding an extra layer of filtration or a pre-filter in the future to further protect it from fine dust, similar to the one in the below video. I'll keep you posted if I decide to make that upgrade!

@@TheEndGrainWorkshop Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of building the same filter system above the split unit. I might still do that. In the end it can't hurt.

    Very detailed info. Thanks. My workshop is 20 x 21 x 10.

      Hey Jorge,
Based on the size of your workshop the WEN 3410 might be a better sized unit. On medium speed it produces 350cfm, which would get you 5 air changes per hour in your workshop. That unit is also less at $150 vs $297 for the WEN 3417. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

hey great video, some notes on your calculations; you calculated correctly i'm just giving you an easier formula. It's (CFM * 60) / room size, in cubic feet. In your case thats (702 * 60) / 7500 = 5.6 air changes per hour. This way you can change the 702 to 556 and 1044 to find out how many air changes for low and high as well without all the extra math.

Thanks Moe, that's great to know less math is always good!

How has it been working out so far?

    • @TheEndGrainWorkshop

It's been working great. As long as you have it properly sized for your space and you change the filters ever quarter you shouldn't have any issues. Filter changes will depend on how often it gets used but it's been great for those fine dust particles 5 micron or less. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Hi there , Thanks for the video. My kennel nursery is 40x20x7. I think the 3417 would be the one . What setting and how long should I run it. Thanks !

I would start out running it on the medium speed at the four hour preset. Then if needed you can adjust accordingly. Thanks for watching!

Might it be faced thw other way?

I faced mine so that the clean air would discharge toward my Mr. Cool Mini split system, but yes you can face it in any direction for the best performance in your workshop.
