  • Today we put Kavalan's malt itself up for review in this masterful "cask strength" edition of Kavalan ex-Bourbon. For those outside of the states or just not aware the Solist line is Kavalan's first fill, CS, single barrel program that has yielded some of the best whiskies in the world. In the US however the term Solist is trade marked and the distillery cannot use that term. As a result Solist bottles in the states are called Cask Strength, but make no mistake they're the same extremely high quality offerings!

    So I was wrong this is closer to 7.5 years old than 5-6.

    Just picked up a bottle from this same barrel today! Excited to give it a try and compare your notes to what I get. Cheers!

    After watching your reviews you guys have turned me onto Kavalan, was skeptical but have been nothing but super impressed. Had the vinho barrique and now trying this one tonight and love it, total vanilla citrus fruit bomb. What’s more it’s actually pretty good value down here in Aus. 200$ for you guys and 200$ aud for me. That never happens !

      Nice man. You have to think, it's a bit more "local" to you than it is to us. I absolutely love what these guys are doing!

      I, too, was a skeptic but Dustin kept introducing me to one wonderful whisky after another. This distillery is a treasure.

    This one was distilled on August 25th 2008 (080825) and bottled on March 31st 2016, so well over 7.5 years.

      Yep, I must have screwed up the math on this one when I checked it after getting it. When I did the description and put in the details I realized I'd screwed up my age statement. Oh well, that's the problem with doing these off memory. Thanks for the note

    This review reminds of the first time I tried the A'bunadh Alba. After years of worshiping their sherry bombs I wasn't expecting to be wowed by the bourbon barrel Alba but now I am a true believer. Hope I can find this Kavalan. Cheers guys

      I didn’t believe the non-Sherry bottles were anything to work up a fuss about but Dustin told me I was wrong and I’m happy to say I was.

    I picked up one of these....4 years ago? maybe 5. Very good, it's a huge vanilla custard dram with soe other elements mixed in. Very sweet, very big on nose and palate. Very good stuff.

      A part of me wants to get a few bottles of different barrels. But costs and what not.

    I’ve tried a bottling of this and am very surprised you rated it higher than the Springbank 12 100% bourbon.

      These are single casks so maybe your Kavalan Ex-Bourbon didn't match the one they have.

      Single cask like Steven said could be the difference. Both are great!

    Nice review. I always pass on the Bourbon cask but maybe I should have another look. Around $165 Cad in one store in Alberta

      Is it a CS one? They have 2 non CS ones. One is 46% and to my knowledge is their ONLY single barrel non CS offering and the other is a cheaper 40% I think offering. The 46% which I have a bottle of is also excellent. But that one ran me 150 and this one was 210 + a glen. So get the CS :)

    I got a lot of pineapple/passion fruit on my bottle.

      Those are both notes I keep seeing in reviews of these bourbon cask Kavalan’s which is welcome news. I rarely get passionfruit in whiskies but when that note is present it’s always a great indicator you have chosen well.

      @@topshelfwhisky The only whisky I've ever gotten straight-up passion fruit on is the old Arran 12CS. And now you know why I've been chasing those for 4 years.

    I call this a key lime pie whisky, lots of quality citrus and vanilla notes. Found it on sale for 110$ and for that price it’s a wonderful expression.
    Btw, does their Moscatel need time to open up? I just opened my bottle and at least on palate it’s not what I was looking for, lots of rubber and plastic notes

    • @topshelfdustin3060
      @topshelfdustin3060 2 роки тому +1

      I've found all of them need a bit of time to really hit a sweet spot. Of course single barrels so you know...I guess a bad one could exist.

    • @Rohanifed
      @Rohanifed 2 роки тому +1

      I’ve never got rubber and plastic notes from the moscatel I own, but agreed with Dustin that it gets better as you get further down the bottle.

    So what was the final season on that pine forest, fall or spring? Or compromise with winter? 😉

      It may actually have been more related to the particular mating smells from the Pine Needle Bug!!
