I have gone through dozens of Oloroso sherry Soloist bottles over the past 5 years, some young and some old. Each cask is a little different but they are all aged in one or two warehouses. Some needed opening-up time; a few were great from the get go, others needed some time on the shelf or hours in the glass. For me, an over-powering note will recede after a few months and not crowd out the other aspects of Kavalan expressions. I walked into the Kavalan outlet store in my town last month (I live in Taiwan) and asked for the Amontillado. To my surprise the sales clerk said they were sold out. It seems other people are hording their favorite Kavalan to consume for life.

I live in Taiwan. The Kavalan Solist lineup is very easy to find throughout the country. It's roughly 110usd and at the distillery you can get a bottle for just under 100usd. If anyone ever visits Taiwan, a day trip to the distillery might be worth it.

Fun review! All whisky lovers have a story or two of their epic malt moments. They propel us to seek more. Even though I can’t share in this one, I’m happy to have a few bottles stashed of one you put on par, the Cadenhead Highland Park 28. Lastly, one of my epic moments followed a full day of motorcycle riding through backroads of mid- and so-cal. We stopped in an Ojai hotel w/ a balcony, and I had brought a Blackadder, cask strength, peated, single barrel whisky (that btw won Malt Maniac’s 2015 premium best award). The whisky and overall malt moment were unforgettable. I’ve a few of those stashed, as well :) Cheers!

Huge fanboy of Kavalan (by far my favorite malt whisky distillery out there, and like you guys said, there's arguably nobody out there releasing better quality sherry finished malts right now). Unfortunately, this specific pick didn't do it for me. I found the finish to completely overshadow the spirit's original malt character. Having had quite a few other Kavalan sherry picks, I've never experienced that before. Still, I'm picking up every Kavalan pick that I come across. Great review! Cheers guys!

Definitely! Coming from the bourbon world, mature oak is probably my favorite quality in most spirits. For me, this one was just left in that wet sherry cask for too long. The oak and malt are drowned in the sherry.
This specific barrel was the first and only miss I've had with any Kavalan. Still, I'm grabbing every Kavalan release I can. Their attention to qaulity cask selection is honestly honestly second to none.

First of all i really like your videos, especially on the kavalans. i have some solist as well and like them all really, but only the base solists (ex bourbon, olorosso sherry, port cask and the vinho barrique) and the podium. port cask and vinho barrique are my favourites here. i have noticed that the port cask from mine is pretty old destilled 2010 and bottle 2021 at 56.3 % (cask no. O101001015A and bottled 2021.06.) so it seems over 11 years old which is really old for a kavalan. i don't know if this is something special or not, because port casks are bigger then sherry casks . what do you guys think about it? and i am from germany and i would recommend you elsburn whisky made in germany. they use really good casks and the whisky is really cask driven. examples are the malaga cask 8 years or the iberica both cask strength. elsburn and kavalan for me right now are the go to whiskys if i want heavily cask driven whiskys.
