  • This has some good information about larger Philodendron species and describes how to care for them. Philodendron 'Pluto' was a new hybrid at the time this was videotaped in the 1990's.
This is a clip from a TV series that aired in the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas, entitled "The Indoor Garden".
After 17 years of hands-on learning about houseplants while working in various aspects of the horticulture biz, Liz decided to take her successsful learning to share on the airwaves.

Happy Growing, Black Star! It can live for years and hope it does.......Here are care instructions, in print, for the Philodendron Selloum, which has the same care.

Philodendron Xanadu today. It's got the most beautiful trunks, just like the Bipinnatifidum/Selloum - which I personally think is half of the appeal of these beautiful plants.

They do mature beautifully and are easy to keep thriving. Thank you for your comment, Lyle!

Not sure if you're just having some fun with us or not :) The Philodendron 'Pluto' takes up most of the video screen. Not sure if that hybrid is sold these days.

@@TheIndoorGardenTVshow The plant you are talking about is philodendron xanadu. Pluto is another cultivar from another specie.

@@user-rv4jw4qr7z I do appreciate your questioning this, and I really mean that, some info does need to be considered more closely to determine if you are getting the right info! The Philodendron 'Pluto' in this video looks very similar to Philodendron Xanadu. I believe the leaves are a bit more narrow on the 'Pluto'. This hybrid was new and popular in the 1990's. (The episode this clip came from was videotaped in 1993.) The plant in this video was presented to us by a trustworthy local grower with the name Philodendron 'Pluto'. The plant was often used by interior plantscaping companies back then. I looked on google for Xanadu and Pluto. All of the pics came from Etsy growers. Mostly, the Xanadu pics did look like this 'Pluto', but not all of them. The 'Pluto' pics on Esty varied in appearance and I would not use that as a guide for the best id. I never heard of a Philodendron Xanadu during the 90's. The link below is to an article that suggests Xanadu was a rare find in Australia and cultivated with a patent for a while, not a hybrid as 'Pluto' is. I certainly understand why you would think the plant in our video is a Xanadu and maybe it is the same plant using a different name at this time. Interesting! Thank you!

If you have a garden center, nursery or a florist nearby you can ask them if they can find you a Philodendron pluto, if one is not in stock. You can also search online. Here is a link to one place that sells them, but it is not in the United States (although I don't know where you live.) Keep looking and I'm sure you'll find one eventually. Thank you for watching the show, Cynthia!

Thank you for your questioning this, Mako! The Philodendron 'Pluto' looks very similar to Philodendron Xanadu. I believe the leaves are a bit more narrow on the 'Pluto'. This hybrid was new and popular in the 1990's. (This show was videotaped back then.) 'Pluto" was used a lot by interior plantscaping companies. Hybridizers can patent their new plant and sometimes when the patent runs out, they aren't grown anymore, sometimes due to decrease in popularity. I haven't noticed one for sale for a long time. I never heard of Philodendron Xanadu during the 90's. @@makodgreat5515 What was the source? Does the info state the writer's credentials? It could be that it's not the same plant. I have a plant that was botanically named, at the time, Pleomele reflexa. Later it was re-categorized into the Dracaena family. Now it's official name is Dracaena reflexa!
