  • From the 1990's TV series, "The Indoor Garden": A look at how to care for a gardenia in your home. This was videotaped in Washington, DC where gardenias will not survive a winter. They can live indoors almost anywhere in the world, if you can provide the specific care they need and that is explained in the clip.
    *For written instructions on how to keep your gardenia alive for many years, see this post on the Gardenia from 'The Indoor Garden' blog:

    "The Indoor Garden" television series was taped on professional VHS and Beta videotape in 1990s. The shows have been transferred to DVD, then converted to .mp4 in HD format. The only modifications from the original show are the abbreviated opening segment and some editing transitions.
    "The Indoor Garden" television series was broadcast on local PBS station WHUT-TV for a few years. It aired in the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas.

    Keep them moist but not saturated. Cool nights trigger bud formation!

      Thank you, Eric, for your input. Gardenias shouldn't stay in a saturated state for long. Because gardenias need full sun and are big drinkers (as we in the biz sometimes refer to certain plants) that should not be a problem. You definitely want to make sure your plant is in a pot with drainage holes and the pot should not be too large for the plant either.

    How late into the year do these house plants bloom? And after the first blooms are spent, do they rebloom too?

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  4 роки тому +1

      Gardenias are summer bloomers. Depending on their care and the amount of light they are given, the length of the blooming time can vary. They should set new buds continually during their blooming season. Thanks for checking out the video, Arthur!

      The gardenia is not meant to stay a very small plant. It is a bush and wouldn't be able to live as a windowsill plant for very long. You can keep the plant pruned to some extent but it will need a fair amount of space as it grows. Thank you for viewing the clip!

    Hello ~ I Love these flowers and ordered them But I live in Michigan & well it's not turning out so good outside so I'm taking it from the video to bring them inside? When I ordered them it said they are frost resistant it that helps

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  8 років тому

      A gardenia should live outside just fine for the summer in Michigan unless it gets below 40° at night. The frost free varieties may not be quite hardy enough to stay outdoors all year in Michigan though. If you can find out what USDA hardiness zone your city is in that should help. I don't believe there is gardenia that can survive anything colder than zone 6 and Michigan, at it's warmest, is zone 5.
      It can certainly grow indoors in front of a south or west facing window that is not blocked by leaves. Happy Growing, Thomas!

      I used to live in Ohio. I had my gardenia since college and gave it to my mom before I moved to CA. The gardenia is indoor and has been growing for over 20 years indoor. All she does it water it WHEN she remembers and barely take care of it. It blooms profusely!! She does put it in the window with hours of sunlight. Hope this help. Good luck!

    They say sunny window but many others say bright window but not direct sunlight? Whats the real deal?

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  3 роки тому

      It may be that the advice changes somewhat depending on the intensity of the sun in that part of the world. I'm not sure, for example, how successful one would be growing a gardenia in Alaska, with its extreme days and nights. This show was made in the Washington, DC area. I would find it difficult to believe that bright indirect light would be enough here. The area of a window can make a big difference, too. In front of large patio windows with little direct sun might work. Gardenias are one of the most particular houseplants about their care indoors. It shouldn't take too long to figure out if your plant is light deprived. Hope that helps and if you need more info, please ask. Thank you for your question and watching the show!

    I just got a bonsai gardenia 3 months ago. Will it survive indoors year round? It’s doing very well right now in my east facing window…I water it and mist it every morning. But can I expect it to do well if I keep it all year indoors?

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  2 роки тому +1

      It's certainly possible. Depending on where you live, and the hours of of winter daylight, you may want to put it a south facing window for the winter. In order to keep it as a bonsai, you'll have to prune the roots and stems occasionally. I recommend finding some expert instruction on maintaining bonsai plants. If you'd like to, you can repot it at some point into a standard growers pot and let it grow out naturally. It will need water a lot less often. It would like some fertilizer occasionally, even as a bonsai, a plant food for acid lovers, such as Miracid. All the best with it!

      @Lilliancooks 2 роки тому

      @@TheIndoorGardenTVshow ok…great advice. Yes, I will check the roots and repot if needed. I have pruned it once so far, but will let the branches grow longer so I can get some height. I also want to get the trunk to thicken. Thank you so much for the response 😊

    make sure your plant is close but not against a sunny window and make sure it is watered everday with moist soil...fertilize too

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  8 років тому

      +Michael Crabtree Yes, it is a good idea to keep the leaves of a plant from touching the window so that they can grow properly, but very close is just fine. Good point!
      The only time I'd recommend everyday watering is if your plant is outdoors, it is hot outside, and you've determined that the soil is drying out very fast. It will wilt if it is too dry and you want to avoid this. If it is indoors and needs water every day to prevent wilting it probably needs a bigger pot.
      There are some expert waterers, and you may be one of them, Michael, that is so attuned to their gardenia that they can water it every day, with just enough water, to keep the soil moderately moist.
      For most folks, I recommend a thorough watering and letting the top of the soil dry out to the touch before watering thoroughly again. Again, they will wilt if allowed to get too dry so you will know how to adjust your watering, if that happens. If they are too wet or too dry some of the leaves will turn yellow.
      Getting your watering habits just right for your plant will help prevent disease and insects. Gardenias need a fair amount of devotion and are not recommended for anyone who doesn't want to, or can't, take the time to do that.
      Fertilizing regularly with an acid based fertilizer such as Miracid by Miracle Gro is the best for them.
      Thanks for your input, Michael, and thanks for watching!

      For viewers: I was asked about growing gardenia cuttings. I don't speak Turkish but was able to find a good English/Turkish online translator! You can try growing a gardenia cutting in water. Find a sunny spot, mist for humidity or provide it another way. Best to try this in warm temperatures, not below 40° F.

      Gardenias should be in front of a window that gets at least 4 hours of sun daily in order to thrive. Sometimes as they are acclimating to a new situation they will drop some buds at first. I'm sending you a link to "The Indoor Garden' blog that includes full instructions for success. All the best for getting it back on track!

    I just got a gardenia about a month ago. I have it indoors and I live in south florida. I am getting alot of bud drop and I am fertilizing monthly with the acid fertilizer and the leaves are really deep green now and I water every 3 to 5 days checking and inch down to see if dry. I also have them on a pebble tray and spray them with water daily. I read that at night they need to he in 60 to 65 degrees or their buds will drop. I keep my ac at 75 and I tried using a thermometer and it seems the room is 68 to 71 degrees. Any ideas if this is the cause and what to do??? I can't set my ac that low or I'd freeze to death and my bill would be astronomical. I also just put some stones on top of the soil to see if that can somehow cool it down. Outside it's also the same temperature so that wouldn't help either.

    • @TheIndoorGardenTVshow
      @TheIndoorGardenTVshow  4 роки тому

      Sometimes buds drop as a Gardenia is acclimating to a new place. The longer days of spring and nighttime temps in the 60-64° range should induce flower buds. Warmer temps during the day won't stop this. It might be that your plant would do best outdoors in mid-February and March, bring it in if it's getting much below 40°. In Florida, that may be your best chance of seeing blooms every year. For now, I hope some of the buds remain. It should be placed in as sunny a place indoors as possible. Outdoors, sunshine for part of the day is plenty. Sounds like you are providing enough humidity and proper fertilizing. I'm not sure what size pot your gardenia is in or how root-bound it is, but you may be watering it too often. It is best to soak the plant thoroughly when watering and let it dry out well a bit below the soil line. It will wilt if it it too dry and will have a fair amount of yellowing leaves, it staying too wet. All the best for success with your gardenia, Rebecca! It may take a little while for it to acclimate but you should be able to have a thriving plant. Let me know......Thanks!
