The old Crate stuff run through a good speaker can be absolutely crushing for both clean and high gain if you dial em right. Maybe not super modern but definitely heavy and unique

I really love your channel, Sonny boy. You are what making good recordings and becoming a great engineer, is all, about.. It's not about the gear. It's not about the studio environment. It's not about the acoustics. It's not about the vibe. It's about what comes out of the speakers.
Now 33 years ago. Way before you were born. I built a gigantic recording truck. I was one of only about a dozen of us. In the country. And in the world, for that matter. And designed. Primarily for, Live, FM & TV & Satellite Broadcasts and Internet Streaming.
But also for Live Album Tracking. At local bars. Local churches. Local music festivals. And recording for rock bands. At their home. And I don't care if they spill a beer. It's on their carpet. I have the control room parked outside of their house. And the microphone Snakes. Inside their house. With a headphone system. And speaker fold back. For, playback purposes.
And I only record. In, crappy acoustic environments. And it does not affect me or my recording and mixing. You just do it. It really is, that simple. Overthinking everything is counterproductive. And makes you screw up. So, don't do that. A word to the wise.
    It's all in good fun

Hey bobby this video was great and I really learned a lot from it! I was wondering something though. How do you make a completely clean guitar track sound wide like for example how chevelle does in send the pain below's verses. I notice there is a bit of chorus but the guitars sound sooo wide. Did they double track and hard pan the tracks? or is there something else that might be going on because I am trying to make this same effect on my song. Thank you as always!

Hi! It looks like you dont record DI part for this section anyway, but how do you approach rhythm and lead guitar section recording with your MOTU M2? It looks to me that you cant record DI, AMP and ROOM at the same time, cuz of it only having two inputs, but i can imagine you want that on a rhythm guitar and lead guitar sometimes... So i get you dont record room for guitars? Or do you use bigger interface for that?

    • @FrightboxRecording

Great question! I usually don't record room sounds for distorted guitars. If I do, I'll use my 8-channel interface.

I’ll give my opinion, call it a tip from Rick
I wouldn’t record that loud as at 0:14 in the video. You are losing headroom and dynamic range. Shoot for an average of -18 and peaks max -10 to get a better recording level. -18 in your daw (digital) corresponds with 0 db on a VU meter (analog)
When mixing with a -18 starting target on the tracks you’ll get faster a better balance and gainstage and more headroom to mix with. Everyone may have different opinions but these levels get me in the ballpark fast and always work the best for me. 😉

Well, actually? It's great to record in laundry room. While doing your laundry. But otherwise? I don't recommend,, the laundry room. Unless you put your, Plate Reverb, in there. Like I did. Back in, 1982. Because spring reverbs, sucked. An affordable digital ones didn't yet exist. And the, Ursa Major Space Station, digital reverberated. Was just a rotten sounding piece of crap. I was so glad somebody else spent the money for it in the studio I worked in. I think I used it once or twice? But only if I wanted to, vomit. I was a Plate Reverb kind of person. I owned two. Loved them and miss them to this very day.. Nothing sounds like those. There is no digital that reproduces, those. They are merely bad imitations. That nobody knows the difference. So I use them. Some of their horrible artifacts people thought were cool. I wouldn't donate diarrhea for it. I wouldn't want to insult my diarrhea. With an Ursa Major Space Station. I mean were they, kidding? I mean it was 40 years ago but? I thought they were joking? I purchased a Lexicon PCM-60 and 70, when they came out. And I just sold my PCM-60 after owning it for 39 years. Still worked and sounded, great. But I still have the PCM-70. And it does more. Sounds the same better more. Looks cooler. Not as quick to set up what you want. It does more than reverb. It's sweet. And then a couple of cheap, LXP-1's and a 5. And in ALESIS, Quadra Verb. Which are actually quite good. Great sounding. Fun to use. Does a lot. But not everything. And some other Effect-Tron II's. And a pair of Yamaha, SPX-90 type II's. As I sold my original Quantic Room Simulator. Years ago. It was nice but. I got a nice chunk of cash for it. It was nice reverb.. But only out to 15 kHz and sampled it 32.5 kilohertz. It was early technology, digital. It sounded okay. You really didn't need more than 15 kHz. But some of us could hear the difference. And so I cut yourself off if you don't have to?
Of course I sort of answer that question for myself. I had sex change surgery decades ago. And I don't miss those other frequencies. I am far more Versatile now. And even Higher Infidelity. Though the first 10:01 years was a cheater. And divorced me. The second one I loved so for 22 years. Until he died a few years ago. And I no longer have to worry about Fidelity. Becoming an, In, thing. I'm free and easy now. I'm retired. I'm old. I mean, I mold. I'm old. 68 and counting. And no end in sight. Though likely no rock 'n' roll anymore either. I think I'm done recording? Maybe? Possibly? For the most part? You never know? I'm a glutton for rock 'n' roll punishment. At these guys definitely know how to play rock 'n' roll. They do it very very well. They've been practicing! What right have day to practice? Because practice makes perfect. As you can hear.. Here. I certainly can. And if I can. You can also. They are that good. This is first rate.
This is how covers should be, covered. And you can put little variations in. To personalize it. As they do so well here. With their own colorations. While they stay true to the original. That's some fine talent. That takes, talent. What a concept! Do you think it might catch on? With others? Likely not. Most are not this talented. Most are basically, sloppy rock 'n' roll bands. Which are just plain fun. Sure. But they don't have this kind of, Professional, Precision.
So some good things do come from Kentucky other than fried chicken. As I did personally meet, Col. Harland Sanders. When I was a kid. My dad was one of his advertisers in Detroit. When there were 5 Big Locations! In the early 1960s. And of course. Sitting in his living room of his mansion, in Kentucky. He asked us if we would like some fried chicken. Of course as a 6-year-old and my 3-year-old brother. We definitely wanted some, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Which they can no longer call it. Because Kentucky copyrighted the term. And the Sanders chicken folks. Didn't want to pay the royalties. So they changed the name to KFC.
But then the Col. came out of his kitchen. With a tray full of fried chicken for us. There's nothing like having actual Kentucky Fried Chicken. From Col. Sanders own oven in his home. Now that's the real deal! That was homemade fried chicken! By the guy that made it famous. As my little brother was sitting in his lap. When he pulled down his little goatee. And said he thought it was a fake? And all the adults got a good laugh. And I thought my little brother Danny was stupid. What made him think that was a fake? Later Danny was fitted for glasses. He had terrible vision. He was terribly myopic. I had, I had jet fighter pilot eyesight. The only one in my family who didn't need glasses. And I'm 68 now. I still don't. Though I do for reading. Those cost as little as one dollar. I like the ones better than cost five dollars-$10. So I have a lot of them. One is never far away. When you can get them that cheap. And when they break. Oh well. There is plenty for them where that came from. I don't need no special prescriptions. I'm naturally gifted. The ring cataracts are not a big problem yet. I was diagnosed with 18 years ago. And still great night vision. I just can no longer read the street names from 1 block away anymore. But then neither can anybody else 30 years younger. And I only gave up motorcycling. Because the repair to my bike was too expensive..
In my time off. I just like eating a lot of raw fish. Trying to build up my immunity to microorganisms. But I think the WASABI kills the microorganisms? And so I'm really addicted to WASABI. Please don't let the DEA know about WASABI. They might take it off the market. If they knew how effective it was. And how it might kill microorganisms? I am doing a 50 year study on that. I'll let you know. Only a few more years now.
I've also discovered. I've done a, 40 year study. Cigarette smoke. Does not reduce the life. Of Audio Equipment. 20+ years in a smoke-filled control room. Versus 20+ years in a smoke-free control room. With the identical equipment. All starting in new condition. The equipment doesn't last more than 22 years/23 years. Before it starts developing, intermittent and inconsistent operation. Mostly due to airborne contaminants. Settling on switch contacts and volume control wipers. And it happens after 22 years. Or so. Either way. Just so you know. Light it up! Breathe deep. In. Ouch. That's good. Keep it going. Don't cough too much. Don't Bogart that joint.
See how easy that was? And now you have a great rock 'n' roll recording.

Yeah, yeah. Really. You can record stupid guitar tracks. Anywhere. Drums, anywhere. Bass guitar, anywhere. Vocals, anywhere. I don't care. I record everywhere.
Soundproofing and acoustics for rock 'n' roll purposes are a misnomer. They are not needed. Not necessary. More important for, Jazz, Operas, symphonies, acoustic folksy stuff. When you want to hear some good acoustics. A storyteller. With some room resonance and vocal resonance.
And lots and lots of EQ and dynamics processing, downward expansion on all vocals. Gating on drums. Downward expansion on buzzy guitars. Some gating on electronic keyboards with, leaky oscillators. That never quite stop. Never quite goes silent. Ugh!
And then you might get something like this? Especially if you use a couple of, as a cell Emulated Plug-ins in your audio software. And know what to do with it. Know how to manipulate it. Know how to sound like Bob Clearmountain with it. That everyone tries to do. And these guys have gotten close. With a good showing. Fine competent engineering.
These folks have made their parents happy. For all the money they have spent. On music lessons and engineering schools. But they most obviously have learned something. And have made their parents proud. I would be proud if they were my kids. But it looks like some of the guys in the band are nearly my age? And have combined efforts with their offspring. To spring forth and spring out. And spring their wings. With, Red Bull. I've been told my,, Bull is Brown. They tell me I have lots of Brown. And they complain about all the Chinese food. I eat. But that's okay. Because I am not making recordings. With Chinese Equipment. No! I refuse! I mean I refuse if it blows out. You have to put new fuses in when they blow out. That's when you refuse them. Do I have to, Learn you everything?
What's your favorite signal chain? Mine is the one you can't afford you always read about and wanted. Yeah I had 36 of those inputs. And 20 of the American version. As you don't want to have just all British sound. You want to have API with Neve. And to record a whole big band and vocalist all at once with that. So you need a lot of those inputs. And a lot of processors like 1176's, LA-3 A's, DBX 160 series. Orban OPTi-Mod Limiters. De-esser's of various flavored manufacturers. A few channels of, 9 band, Parametric, Graphic, Equalizers. For some surgical work. A bunch of TV cameras located about. And a soundproof control room. Inside a gigantic diesel box truck. So I could have the, Sound City Control Room. With me. Wherever I went. And is very handy to have. I recommend it.
What? Am I crazy? You bet! You have to be. As this is a stupid, money losing business to be in. As I know for a fact. My colleague. My competitor. My next-door neighbor studio. George Massenburg. He's had a couple of studios go out of business. And I always wondered how that was possible? How could that happen to him? So I don't feel so bad. As I've lost a lot less money than George. As I billed much more cost-effective and intelligent recording studios. That sound, stellar. It always amazes people how great my control rooms sound. I have a secret sauce. I waved my hands over the equipment. And it instantly sounds better. And people hire me to do it to their own control rooms. Which I am always very happy to accommodate. Even if they are also broke.
It's all in how you mix it up.
