  • What do cheap microphones, cheap interfaces, budget instruments and cheap audio recording gear sounds like? I used only budget audio gear to record a song and the results are surprising. Don't buy a Neve preamp!

Now that you've heard the cheap stuff, listen to what a $1800 preamp sounds like! ua-cam.com/video/vAubwgakqQI/v-deo.html

Some people are really good at recording. That ability way way more important than good gear.

Cool idea to use super cheap stuff. And this video really reveals why it makes more sense to buy good used gear instead of bad new gear.

I agree with some of the other comments, at the end of the day it’s more the person behind the gear that makes something sound good, cheap or expensive. Yes it’s a cheaper different flavor, but you managed to make it sound unique and nice. Great job!

You make this cheap gear sound too good man. Next time you should do a video "recording with the cheapest musicians" so we can see how bad it really sounds. Ha!

I just reviewed the Fifine mics (pronounced Fine Fine). They're decent. I didn't notice the condenser still works without phantom power though! I actually used the dynamic mic at band practice last week. I guess a drawback is that you can just pull it off the bracket if you're a singer and want to handhold the mic. But the tone is pretty good. I think I need to do a "how low can you go" cheap gear recording also. Then we can compare how someone with actual talent (you) stacks up to a wannabe hack(me)! HA!

Isn't there some law that makes that pronunciation illegal? I like your video idea and I look forward to seeing it, Jayce!

Two takeaways for me: The first is yes the uber cheap gear is often a hindrance to good results. But also consider how much better the cheaper name brand offerings sound when combined with some basic engineering skill. A $120k studio in a total noobs hands won’t yield a hit record.
When I was a teen in a band my lead guitar player would often use a bic lighter as an improvised slide on electric guitar. If he planned ahead, which was rare 😂 He had a .50 caliber shell that had the gun powder removed. Good times.

Thank you. Impressive but let's be honest Your musicianship and experience saved the day. Any 'normal' guy would just be out in the swamp without a compass (GPS Grounded Pretty Severely) . The interface alone would have overwound E to A i.e. snapped anybody without considerable experience and/or Chinese fluency (the language not the pickups). Lessons learned (for me) . The dirt cheap stuff could be okay if you have the time and experience to work it out but there are enough low price branded products that are tested on the Tube and have forums and interest groups to help and assist. If however you feel the urge to 'boldly go where no man has gone before' I wish you luck

Nothing from the barn for about four months now... It's starting to look like neglect of your subscriber base.
I still don't know if you are pro the reduction of consumption through recycling, or free creativity with cheaper/simpler equipment, or investment in more expensive stuff to maintain resale price while training ears with proven high-quality instruments. Or all of the above and more :-)... But I agree with you.
