  • 2005 Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevy Trail Blazer, GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Hummer. How to replace the defective Variable Valve Timing Solenoid, (VVTS) aka Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid (CPAS) aka Variable Valve Oil Control Valve Solenoid! Whew...too many names, not enough detail.
    This part is defective and can rupture multiple metal screens that circulates in your crankcase oil like a virus disrupting normal operation of your engine. The screens may lodge in your valves, cylinder, become a source of metal debris scraping and circulating in your oil resulting in disrupting, destroying and prematurely wearing out your engine. Get that defective solenoid out of your engine and replaced with the re-engineered fix!
    There are multiple codes that could be related to this defective part P0106, P0017, P0068, P0014, P0013, P0101, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305.

    Additional Information: Here is a Service article April 2013 from www.motor.com that may address any additional information that you are looking for regarding the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid replacement.
    GM Truck
    Belt noise, rough idle, possible MIL illumination. Some 2004-11 GM trucks with inline 4-, 5- or 6- cylinder engines may emit a screech or howl from the drive belt and produce a rough idle. In some instances, the MIL may also be illuminated, with DTCs P0106, P0014 and/or P0017 logged in PCM memory. Two likely causes of the trouble, reports GM, are a defective camshaft actuator solenoid or excessive crankshaft end play due to a worn crankshaft thrust bearing.
    Start your diagnosis by removing the cam actuator solenoid. The solenoid has three grooves with oil feed holes. Groove 1 supplies advance pressure to the cam actuator; groove 2 supplies pressurized oil from the oil pump; groove 3 supplies retard pressure to the actuator. There are three fine-mesh screens in the grooves that prevent small dirt particles from entering the cam actuator. If any of the screens are clogged or missing, replace the solenoid, change the oil and filter, then start the engine and see if the symptoms persist.
    Trucks that are susceptible to the belt noise and driveability concerns noted are 2004-09 Chevy TrailBlazers and HUMMER H3s, and 2004-11 Chevy Colorados and GMC Envoys & Canyons.
    The cam actuator solenoid on GM inline engines has a screen in each of the three oil grooves to prevent debris from entering the camshaft actuator. If any of the screens are clogged or missing, replace the solenoid to see if the belt noise and driveability issues are resolved

    Changed mine at 100 000 km's and had 1 or 2 missing screens, the engine was running rough and had rough idling. I checked my new camshaft position actuator solenoid and it still looks great. Hi Tony, You can still run it but you are taking a chance of the screen coming off and getting lodge somewhere that causes more problems. I think it is better to inspect your VVT and if it looks clogged or has the screens without the wire clamp, I would change it out to avoid future problems. Good Luck!

    Love your videos. Ive been having trouble with the oil pressure light. Also makes a light whining as I accelerate up from idle when light is illuminated. It only has these symptoms after a 20 minute warm up at idle. I replaced the oil pressure sensor or sending unit. It had been leaking oil through the plug. It fixed the light for a few weeks, but not the whining or intermittent rough idle. The light came back on today and I installed this solenoid. My old one was original and intact, but looked like the screens were getting clogged. Hoping it fixes my intermittent rough idle. Any concerns or wisdom for me to consider with the clogged screens on the old part? Or suggestions if the noise and rough idle continue? No check engine light ever came on for any of the above issues. 04 i5 2wd 231k miles.

    Thank you for doing these. Do you think you could do a quick how-to on accessing and lubing manual door windows? I know there's not a lot of force or metal involved, but I don't want to break things taking the door apart on my 2007 Canyon and then have to buy a bunch of new parts that cost as much as having somebody else do it right the first time. If interiors aren't your thing I understand cause they aren't mine either. Thanks again!

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the good comment Jim. Good idea! I will add it to my list. While you wait for a good video, I use a Silicon greaseless lubricant and spray it into the rubber on the side of the windows, where the window slides up and down. This will prevent the rubber from grabbing and pulling the window off the track. The silicone dries in seconds then work the window up and down to spread the silicone. The dry silicone is good because it doesn't freeze or gum-up and does not get grease on your window like other greasy or oily products. Cheers!

    Thanks for the video. I just ordered a new solenoid. My 2005 has an issue where the idle intermittently drops down to around 450-500 at stop lights, and feels like it's about to stall. But it's never activated a code. I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body real good, clean the maf sensor, and put new spark plugs in. Do you have any suggestion of what I should look at next?

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  3 роки тому +2

      Do you think some debris got pass the fuel filter and partially clogged a fuel injector? The computer may not pick up on it as it is still opening and closing properly it is just clogged. Changing injectors is a big job, I would wait to be sure before changing the injectors. You may find that the screens on your solenoid are plugged which may solve your problem

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  3 роки тому +2

      It’s hard to diagnose from here. You may be wise to let the problem evolve until it gets bad enough to throw a code. I have not had that problem and I don’t want to speculate. Check 355 Nation, I believe some guys have had your problem. Hopefully, the new solenoid will take care of it. Cheers!

    A while back I went to change it and accidentally changed the wrong part (I changed the camshaft position sensor, there was some confusion) and it gave me a p0300 code and blinking engine light after wards. I still changed the actuator cause that was the original problem needed to be fixed and that p0300 code still stayed along with the blinking engine light. All because I changed the wrong sensor. Any idea on what I could do or what could be wrong? Keep in mind the truck runs completely normal, no rough idle or stalling.

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  Рік тому

      This may seem overly simple but often the simplest causes are easily overlooked. Are you sure there is enough oil in it? Is it the correct grade of oil? 5W30? Was the oil filter changed when the oil change was completed? I would start with the simplest (most affordable) action and work out from there. The oil life sensor monitors the condition of the oil.(basically the colour) When the oil gets low and dirty(dark in colour), it indicates that an oil change is needed. Is the oil clean (light beige honey colour) and at the correct level on the dipstick? (just below the full mark?) Was the oil life indicator reset after the oil change? I hope that helps Dell

    I just now got a p0014 code on my chevy colorado 3.5 would that one be the same one you just pulled out or could it be one of the other two. I recently took it off about 3months ago and did a inspection on it and did a clean as well all the screens were in place.

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  Рік тому

      It could be a few things RG 1. It could be the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid (CPAS) but I doubt it. My CPAS never did fail in function. It was still working properly, it was missing a screen which is serious as it is floating debris in the oil but did not cause an engine code. If you have recently checked it and it is not clogged with debris, then we can rule that out. I would speculate that it could be 1) Dirty and/or low oil level. If you do not have enough oil then the CPAS can not function properly. 2) It may also be a failed Camshaft Position SENSOR... not the CPAS SOLENOID. There are two of these sensors. One on the exhaust side and one of the intake side. If one of those is failing intermittently it will through a p0014 code because the computer can not monitor the Camshaft position properly. You truck may be driving reasonably well or it may have rough idle and poor performance due to poor Camshaft positioning. The Sensors are relatively easy to replace and not that expensive. I should do a video on that. I hope that helps

      If you are getting rough idle as well then you use have something wrong that you have over looked. Have you switched the fuel injectors? If you switched fuel injector 5 with fuel injector 4 does the code change to cylinder 4? You may have a defective fuel injector. I had one of my brand new fuel AC Delco injectors be defective. Don't give ups Alex. Look for something you missed s you change that fuel injector.Godd luck Pal

    Can this cause a p0017 error on a 2008 colorado?

    • @cantletherdiediy1050
      @cantletherdiediy1050  Рік тому +1

      It is hard to diagnose someone's vehicle without looking, listening, and learning the history. That being said, you may need to replace a camshaft position sensor, or a timing chain (I hope not), or this VVT solenoid in my video. I'm not sure what your specific situation is. I would start with the camshaft position sensor. Hopefully it is just a failing sensor. The sensor looks similar but it is Not the solenoid that I replace in the video. I would also check the VVT solenoid anyway to see if you have the re-engineered fix part and that you have all the screens as I discussed in the video. I hope that helps Ericc1978

      Are you sure they are metal shavings? Are the shavings attracted to a magnet? Change your oil and oil filter right away. Use a clean drain pan so you can examine the oil for metal shavings by using a magnet. I have a video on that Carlos at this link ua-cam.com/video/mp5GNEogSUo/v-deo.html

      Don't give up Alex. Walk away for now and tackle the problem when you are fresh. You've narrowed the problem down to cylinder 5. I responded on your other comment. Make sure the boot of the coil pack is completely on the spark plug. Sometimes, people think its installed properly but because cylinder 5 is hard to reach the boot can be installed in a way that it is outside of the spark plug which causes rough idle and misfiring on cylinder 5. Also check the electrical plug going to cylinder 5 coil pack for a worn/ bare wire going to the # 5 coil pack. You got this and are very close to figuring/correcting the problem. You may have missed something. Let us know and good luck my fiiend...I've been where you are and its a bad feeling but power through it.
