It is really tragic when you really look at it. Gotham is a disgusting, crime ridden city where people probably can’t go out for a stroll without getting mugged. It’s full of criminal masterminds that thrive off of other peoples pain and misery. Then comes a man named Harvey Dent. A well mannered selfless individual who (unlike most politicians) has a clear desire for the city to be cleaned up and fixed. He wants it to be a place where people don’t have to constantly live in fear. He could be the saving grace that the city has needed for decades. The people love him. He is allied with the police and the caped crusader. Everything is looking great for him. But unknown the the public eye is that Harvey has been dealing with a split personality all his life and has spent it trying to keep it locked away. After being suspected of killing Luigi Maroni, acid is thrown on his face and he is both physically and mentally scarred from it. His career is over. The anger, sadness, shock, and confusion combined is enough for his split personality to take over. The man who was once what Gotham truly needed, a man with a strong desire to do the right thing, has now become another victim of the city and becomes one of its most dangerous criminals. Everything he fought for now means nothing and he has become the thing he had tried so hard to stop

In the comic, when Holiday kills Sal Maroni, it’s revealed to be Alberto Falcone, who confesses to being Holiday and faking his own death. When Harvey is being arrested, his last words to Batman and Gordon are “There were two Holiday killers”. Batman says that since he killed Carmine, in a sense they were both the Holiday killer. Then we end with Gilda burning the evidence and having an inner monologue about why she became the Holiday killer. Batman is NOT in the scene, Gilda has NO prior connection to Alberto, and in the end we honestly don’t know which two were the killer, or if all three were the killer. Bruce and Selina do NOT know each other’s identities, and her loyalties are ambiguous. There is also a fun scene where Carmine brings in The Riddler to deduce the identity of Holiday. When he fails to do so, Carmine has him thrown out, Holiday shows up, and shoots around Edward leaving him alive, on April Fool’s Day. Beyond that, the movie is extremely close, borderline word for word.
Oh, there is also a funny bit at the end where Alberto gets a cell across from Calendar Man and they just glare at each other saying “Calendar Man” “Holiday” back and forth.

It does take place a long while after Long One my friend. Long Halloween was NEVER a sequel to Year One. Just a tale in Batman's "early years" (not first year mind you). As the poster said, it's a story that has his entire rogues gallery already. But it doesn't have Robin. You even read Dark Victory and knows this.
      Get your facts right.

    • @JLD22591
      @JLD22591 Рік тому

@F-Red Maverik I mean, it isn't a direct sequel, but the creators of the long Halloween and Dark victory have said that it was their intention to create somewhat of a sequel or a spiritual successor to Year One and show the transition between organized crime and supervillains. That was actually the pitch for the book. The forward of the graphic novel is the story of how Archie Goodwin went to Jeff Loeb and Tim sale and told them they should essentially make a sequel to Year One since Frank Miller was probably never going to do it. So you might want to calm down a little bit on telling other people to get their facts right. Lol
Also, if anyone wants to see at least how the Joker was introduced then they should check out The Man Who Laughs which fits pretty nicely in between Year One and The Long Halloween.

I had anxiety about this mainly due to the Killing Joke adaptation left when it comes to classic stories adapted in the DCAU that I had to think about. So, I hoped especially with Jensen Ackles who I not only grew up with into a young adult as Dean Winchester got older on Supernatural but knowing he was graduating from Under The Red Hood to play a younger Dark Knight, damn perfect casting for one of the greatest stories of the Genre. On a side note: With DC venturing into a live action cinamatic Multiverse there's many classic DC heroes Jensen could play but Imo he would be perfect as a new Batman down the line. Big fan of Batfleck and now it seems Keaton will be a more jaded version of his Dark Knight. Ackles has all it takes to be a great Bruce Wayne and Batman. I see him as a veteran Batman but still a more optimistic Batman than say what 20 years has done to Batfleck in BVS.
I enjoyed this adaptation. I agree. Despite it being a story that could have 2 parts I say give us a 2 disc DVD set then! Great upload. The best way I can support this channel at present is by giving you a share. From Batman, to wrestling, to classic sitcoms etc I binge this channel so much. Please keep the uploads coming 👍

I almost completely agree with you about the ending of the movie. Gilda being the Holiday killer makes sense. What didn't make sense was how different Holiday actually looked when on screen. She looked more like Harvey Dent. They should have darkened the character so that we couldn't get a good look at her. I still don't think it makes the movie any less enjoyable, though. It just prompts me to give a friend who wants to watch the movie a heads up: Don't focus on the look of Holiday when trying to figure out the killer. It'll make the movie much more enjoyable.

@@FoxsDumbSeriesMakerI’ll give you my best interpretation because the book wasn’t 100% clear. I’m pretty sure the first Holiday was Gilda. Later Harvey joined in, the boat might have been his first “killing” it seems from there I’m not sure if Harvey let Alberto live or if Alberto survived, but Alberto did become holiday afterwards and was the one arrested for it. I have to read the book again to be sure. It’s also possible that Harvey was never holiday or didn’t consider himself holiday but he was the “killer” on the boat. Hope that helps a bit

Holiday Killer has completely different eyes, facial structure, and body structure which is only a point because as you said the disguise is limited. Overall it just isn't believable that she could be the killer in this version because she doesn't look different enough to pass and the killer's disguise doesn't do enough to hide the fact that it's her in a meaningful way; especially with the eyes.

Yeah, I also wasn’t to big on the change made when Bruce and Harvey burn Carmine Falcone’s money.
In the comic, Bruce/Batman and Harvey decided to burn the cash at once. Catwoman never gave them the idea (Plus, why would she be casually carrying a match with her?) Also, why would Bruce give Harvey the coin, or even why does he even need a two-headed coin to begin with? In the original story of Harvey Dent, the coin was a family heirloom given to him by his abusive father who is the reason for his schizophrenia, bipolar, and identity disorder he suffers from. That coin is meant to be for him to flip whenever he’s stressed out, remembering his father, and a symbol of his inevitable fate in the future. But by having Batman give him the coin for literally no reason other than because, feels kind of dumb.
If they really wanted this scene, it should have been just after Bruce/Batman and Catwoman find the money, he calls up Harvey, they have their talk, Batman says to burn it for it’s the only way, and Harvey isn’t very sure so decides to pull out the coin and say, “Heads, we burn it.”, except only he knows that it’s two-headed, showing the darkness arriving in him.

The thing you pointed out about characters like Scarecrow and Mad Hatter just being there and not having a real purpose is one of this adaptation's biggest failings imo. The comic frames the turning of Harvey Dent into Two Face as also the turning of Gotham from a normal crime ridden city into the absolute hellhole run by supervillains that we know it as. The Long Halloween is a Gotham City origin story, and the supervillains slowly becoming more and more present as the mobsters get picked off is a huge part of that. They added a lot more action to the climax when the comic just revealed Two Face for the first time sitting at the Roman's desk surrounded by all of Batman's rogues. It's an absolutely iconic image and this movie really dropped the ball with that aspect of the story.

The mystery of who's the villain reminded me a lot of the game Heavy Rain, where the body habitus of the killer changes tremendously when masked and unmasked. I totally agree it's a dirty trick by the animators just to throw off audiences. This is not a way the freedom that the animation medium offers should be leveraged.
Even Mask of the Phantasm pushes the limits of suspension of disbelief that the Phantasm, who relatively matches Batman's build, can be the much smaller Andrea. Shoulder pads and lifts can't fake it, but for some reason this movie and Heavy Rain irked me much more.

my only problem with this movie was that it was kind of obvious who holiday was from the beginning of movie 2. Kind of. Spoilers:
If you look at the closeups of holiday, it’s clearly Harvey. From the sideburns to the facial structure to the buildup, it felt so obvious

not related to Batman, but, I'd love if Marvel did animated adaptation of comic stories like DC has done. Like, how much would I love an animated adaptation to Kraven's Last Hunt, or Maximum Carnage

The only thing I didn’t like was that even by Part 2, nobody was even suspecting the actual killer, what, because she’s a woman? Even though she literally lives with their main suspect, and obviously once they catch two-face in the alley and see Holiday and Harvey in the same place at the same time, and EVEN CONSIDER THAT IT WAS A HIRED HAND, they still never considered Gilda. It’s just the only thing that really bugged me.

I think the second part is better than the first part because harvey's story is so good. I just watched this movie and gotham knights recently, and harvey dent has become one of my favorite characters now. I hope he's in the batman part II, I suspect he will be because reeves said he's taken inspiration from the long halloween in his adaptation.

You need to read the long Halloween all the way through and it's continuation is the dark victory Yes the long Halloween is two faces origin story but it's it's a story you really need to very close attention to where you have to pick up every clues page by page and put it up to your crime web/map and figure out the direction of where this case is lean towards now there will be some red herrings on who the real killer is in the long hallway but I promise you two face is tied together in the long Halloween and in dark fit three however at the end of long Halloween it's going to blow your mind on who the real second killer is, also in dark victory when you put those clothes that you already know from long Halloween together and bring it over to dark victory it just becomes more bigger when you see and focus on Harvey dent as two-faced in dark victory and then there's this new lawyer in town it will make you question if she is the second real killer from dark Halloween/a strong connection to Harvey Dent's past however again you need to read the long Halloween comic from beginning to end before you really enjoy or compare the movie adaptation of long Halloween.

That panel with Batman using the megaphone asking about the Joker contextually isn't as goofy and make Batman look incompetent in the actual comics it's in but it's also from No Man's Land which is a two year long cross over across all the Batman books and spinoffs like Robin, Nightwing, the mute 90s Batgirl, Azreal etc. So it's a really complex story that justifies why Batman is using a megaphone to ask about the Joker.
The short version is: Gotham had it's worst earthquake ever that made the city a more unlikeable hellhole with zero in tact infantructure. It destroyed Wayne Manor, the Batcave and all Bruce's wonderful toys. Batman as Bruce goes to the Washington D.C. to request aid, they annex Gotham instead and set up a military checkpoint around it where nobody can get in or out and make it illegal for Bruce to use his money to help so he has these same asshole politician's giving his bank accounts scrutiny so he can't really use his money like he usually would.
Batman returns to Gotham, and it's taken over by various supervillains who have set up little fiefdoms under their protection. The Joker isn't one of them. Batman now basically has to work out how to take back over Gotham without his technical or financial advantage and the citizenry hating him for disappearing and letting costume bozos basically become warlords who control all the food and water.
The Megaphone thing is basically Batman showing back up and letting everyone know he's back and he's going to war with the costumed bozos because he isn't just stealhly fighting crime he has to become the guy who Gotham as city relies on by replacing these supervillain warlords and supporting the citizens through basic human needs like food and water. Throughout the comic he does that megaphone thing to reach as many people as possible who have information he can use to help them.
The Joker specifically isn't a warlord, but is around and we follow him throughout the comic planning... something they we don't find out about until the last part of the event. Batman occasionally discovers evidence about him being around which is usually long dead corpses but no sign of the Joker himself. Batman is absolutely desperate about any lead he can get on the Joker to stop whatever he's doing cause it will undoubtedly be really bad...and it is.
Sorry for the novel about a meme panel, it just makes sense in context and that's about as much as I can simplify it to make sense. No Man's Land is really good, y'all should pick it up if you want a really solid long running Batman storyline that puts Bruce and co into an entirely different situation then they're used to and meticulously planned storytelling done really well.
