Charlie being bi makes so much sense, like he didn't reject Patrick when he kissed him. I really think he was attracted to both Patrick and Sam and was confused about his feelings.

I disagree. I don't have a problem with bi characters, but I think that Charlie didn't pull away because he was trying to be a good friend. Sam even mentions it later on, in her speech on love, and how it's Charlie's nature to not think about himself in most situations. That's why the scene in her room before she goes off to college is so important. It shows Charlie finally living for himself and not others. I just think that if Charlie was bi, there would be more evidence.
As a male, I have to say that I appreciate Charlie's crying. I feel like there is a stereotype against males crying or expressing emotion, so reading that Charlie was able and willing to express his emotions felt like something that I needed to read about.
The first time I read this book I was 12 and then I reread this year when I was 19 and for the most part I had the same opinions, but it felt like I just resonated so much more with Charlie (and all the characters really) now that I’m older and out of high school. It was definitely an interesting experience!
I think the movie format worked so well with perks, with the music, acting, and cinematography being so well done. But I agree, I don’t like that they took a lot of the family dynamic a way. That was one of my favorite aspects of the book and it played such a big part in Charlie’s life
i totally agree. I felt it was more emotional for me as an older adult, understanding certain things i din't get the first time. AND YES THE FAMILY DYNAMIC!
I just finished this book as a 27 year old and I identify with Charlie SO MUCH. His constant crying and nervous energy made me feel seen. I cried so much between my freshman year and even now it's so reflective. I gave it 5 stars and I loved the book.
I'm not sure how you will take this, but puberty has done you well. This was coming from a 2008 skinny freshman who wore braces.
I think the movie is not only a good adaptation but also a good movie. The main difference I think is that the movie is about a freshman boy with depression growing through a friendship with seniors. And the book is about Charlie’s friends AND family
It's such a good book. I love this book so so so much. I'm just finishing up my freshman year. Maybe I'll do this myself.
