I read this book last year because I was just so curious after seeing it in my recommendeds over and over. Honestly wasn't terrible. Not anything groundbreaking and not as good as the PJO series in either creating likeable characters or using Greek mythology in clever ways but not super painful to read or anything. My favorite part though is really early on in the book when the main kid casually mentions that his mom has signature owl stationary, as if there is a such thing as casually mentioning owls in a book about Greek mythology. Like, I wonder if that's gonna come back and be important later. But what's funny is it doesn't even turn out that his mom is secretly Athena or a descendant of Athena or a follower of Athena. They're literally just sisters. And it's like, he says they have owls all over the house. Why? I get that owls are Athena's thing but my apartment isn't filled with Miami Heat merch just because my brother is a big fan. Does Athena just keep buying her owl knickknacks and she knows she'll be like, "Hey, where's that owl clock I gave you?" if she doesn't see it so she's resigned herself to letting all this owl gear take over her house? I know none of this is plot relevant but I stopped for a whole five minutes to have this monologue in my head when I got to that part of the book.

This sounds like a fanfic I would make in 4th grade. There’s potential, but it definitely needs some work (like not ripping off *multiple* different books)
In all honesty, if the book was about Hercules just profiting off his success by having a camp where children can do the 12 labours, I think it would be a little entertaining and not nesiscarlly a Percy Jackson rip off. Riordan's work is all about the world of mythology adapting to the modern world (I.E Hermes being a postman or Thor watching mortal tv), but the gods are keeping a low profile and in the shadows, much like a lot of fantasy stories. But this could be a big role reversal in the genre, and could have been at least mildly amusing.
Right? I was thinking that that actually sounds like an interesting take on the myth. If the execution had been better, I feel like it would get less flack for being a PJO ripoff, but here we are.
if you're looking for more mythology novels, i'd recommend the secrets of the immortal nicholas flamel by michael scott. it has basically every mythology ever, is 6 books, and is very different from pj while also being strong in things like characterization and even location (characters travel around the world in adventures but do it in a very natural way with logical stops and such)

i've read the magnus chase series, and then another middle grade norse mythology series called the blackwell pages shortly after. it's a perfect example of its own unique book that shares norse mythology with the magnus chase trilogy. hearing your review and seeing the book makes me kind of angry as well, because it's very possible to take a topic and make it your own. percy jackson is very special to me, so i'll just look at it in this way : uncle rick did such a good job, and his books are still so relevant, that two random authors thought to basically copy it.

Hephaestus did as he was asked and Athena bursted out of his open wound fully grown and in battle armour. To put simply, Hera and Athena are aunt and niece. (Fun fact: this procedure is called Trepanation or Trepanning, and was a common caveman cure for headaches by means of cracking open the skull to allow evil spirits to escape the head and is now used by Doctors to alleviate pressure and pain in the brain).
