When I first saw it I thought aunt helen might be a perv, but I told myself that there was no sign of it and I was just being dirty, than I thought 'wow my spidy sense is great'

I try to commit suicide in "highscool" and spent a lot of time in Psyke wards and treatment home's. I'm a glasfusing artist now. Just turned 42 and still kicking 😉 We can get trough anything if we just try.. I'm following my passion. I'm no big deal I'm just in an artist collective in Sweden doing my thing 😊
Oh yeah, getting abused as a kid makes puberty and beginning relationships so much more intense and messed up than it already is. Felt really great to see it on screen especially in an understanding light.
It’s directed by the author of the book, I think that’s partially why it’s so fantastic. He got to tell his story how he wanted.
I agree. It's so clearly a project filled to the brim with love. I'm glad he was so heavily involved. It makes for a very faithful adaptation. It's great.

That’s makes sense. It’s hard to nail the vision of the original author when you have no connection but being the author gives you the ability to literally just nail everything you think is truly important for the story. I loved this movie!
"We accept the love we think we deserve" is such a succinct way to get across a universal truth about human psychology. Will never forget this film/book for that message alone.
It’s interesting. Everybody in my life has been in abusive relationships but specifically my sister and mom and I never understood why they stayed and why they got into one after another and that sentence just helps you understand it in a whole other way.
@@heartbreakhotel4278 100%, so sorry to hear that your loved ones (and maybe you? experienced that. That's a clearly severe form of this concept, and what's been wild for me was realizing all the little minor ways it has played out in my life, too. Little things like not accepting compliments I don't think I deserve or just any instance where I've settled for the short of the stick. Then realizing the biggest way I've been impacted is that I didn't believe I deserved to love **myself** and didn't know how much I wasn't loving myself til therapy helped me see it. Had to internalize more compassionate messaging to start building my self-esteem, and something tells me that kind of compromised self-esteem is the root of most victims' susceptibility to abusive relationships. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, wishing the best for you and your loved ones

Ain't never rooted for a character as hard as I rooted for this kid Charlie.
Yeah, what's slightly sadder is the author has dropped tiny hints that he IS Charlie. So we are really rooting for him as well as the character he created. So the book is probably slightly autobiographical. He added a letter to an anniversary edition of the book that... Clarified slightly that he is Charlie. But he doesn't straight up say it... that's why I'm being vague and hypothetical .. I could *very* well be reading into things. Take it with a grain of salt and all that. Idk. But it's still very heartwarming to know "Charlie" is doing okay now. And things got better for him. That "update letter" was very very appreciated and deepened my love for the book immensely.
Man this movie always hits hard in such a surprising way, it sneaks up on you slowly. Then that use of ‘Heroes’ at the end is just perfection. Might be one of the few cases where I like the movie as much as or more than the book. Also, Paul Rudd is a treasure
maybe that's cause the author of the book was the director of the movie.
This book saved my life. I was a suicidal teen and a lot of Charlie's issues with abuse resonated with me and made me realize I wasn't alone.

This is going to sound cringe but when I first read the book, it really made me feel less alone. When I'd get really sad and have bad thoughts, I'd write letters to Charlie as if he was a real person. Just venting about shit helped ease some of the pain. At 16 I got the tattoo "I feel infinite" because I'm still alive baby. Thank you Charlie.
No cringe at all! We all have those things in books or movies that get us through rough spots. I’m glad you found some comfort and that you made it through !
Thats amazing and glad it helped. Honestly people shit on the movie and book for being to "popular" or "everyone likes it youre not special" but like.......they are amazing. I'm not much of a reader since i have poor reading comprehension and it gives me anxiety so movies are more my vibe, but honestly the movie was done beautifully and also meant a lot to me. I hope youve been doing good :)

I think that’s part of what the author was trying to do. Make us feel less alone. I relate to the movie and book so much and it definitely bring me comfort and hope. I’ve been suicidal and depressed but that monologue at the end fills me with hope and a small bit of happiness that I can get.

Fun fact: The director is the author of the book the film is based on! The scenes that were in the book but not in the film were still filmed and are deleted scenes available to watch on youtube! One of the best decisions ever to let the author direct the movie.
I had a teacher like this back in 7th grade. He taught English too, and was in charge of the Film Club. He's one of the reasons why I now love literature and film so much, introduced me to so many novels that weren't on the curriculum and a lot of foreign films I'd otherwise not have seen till much later :) I'm 23 now and have the greatest memories from that class. A good teacher is so important. When you know they're passionate and ACTUALLY want to be there, it's just everything.
Fun fact: the shop teacher is played by Tom Savini. He's known for being a special effects and prosthetic makeup artist on some of George Romero's films, Friday the 13th films and other horror films. He's also acted and done stunt work in some of them. He's well known for playing Sex Machine in From Dusk 'Til Dawn. And he directed the Night of the Living Dead remake.
This is probably the best adaptation of a book I’ve ever seen. Love both the film and book.
I'd say that bully girl in Charlie's class is less Sid from Ice Age and more Sid from Toy Story.
Was I the only one who thought that Charlie actually said that whole 'fantasizing that one us has cancer' remark outloud and it because it was so outrageous that was just brushed off as Charlie trying to be funny?
Because only from watching this did I realise it might've been just in his head as his internal screaming.
And I don't know which is funnier.
This is one of those movies that just touches my heart and makes me cry everytime I watch it. Great reaction as always
OMG, YES! One of my favorite movie reactors finally reacting to one of my all time favorite movies. I love this movie so much, it's difficult to even describe. Thank god the author of the original novel served both as director and screenwriter on this one. He did a perfect job, though the book is even better still.

@@JamesVSCinema Yes. I have many friends who were "outsiders" like me and this movie is very important to us all. It kind of makes one feel more understood, especially if you can relate to Charlie in some form or way.
Being an introvert, shy to a degree and thinking about things in a different way to others or getting bullied are things I can relate to. So in many ways this movie makes me feel seen and heard and that life doesn't have to be "a sad story" to put it in his words

Love the film making on the acid scene where he’s sitting watching everyone pass by.
There’s deleted scenes on UA-cam! It shows more of Charlie’s relationship with his family and social life is school. I remember moving to a new school, struggling to find a friend group..so I went to the library to read and this book was the first one I saw. Such a safe read for me 💜
I love how you pointed out the crucial distinction between centering a film just on a setting, vs. centering on a human story that *plays out* in a setting. Often we think that generalities make something more relatable, but in storytelling it's actually the specifics that make something thoroughly human (and thus more relatable).
i remember watching this movie for the first time. Not ashamed to say it, i cried lol. It hits deep and was very well done.
This film is fantastic and it has such a personal touch in dealing with real deep to the cut mental health

This film just screams emotion I've only watched it once and I couldn't stop thinking bout it for a good few weeks even just the reaction highlight got me emotional was good to see James had the same thoughts as I did while experiencing it
God I love this movie so much. Charlie's character hits so close to home. Just about everything about what he deals with is all too familiar for me. As a hyper empath, his line in the hospital about all the pain, others' pain, and not being able to not see it - takes the words right out of my mouth.. And when Sam asks him why he never approached her, and he says it was because he didn't think she wanted that, putting her wants before his own. Mhm.. And i am certainly a wallflower too. Such an incredibly beautiful film. In my opinion, it's THE best high school movie ever!
I cry damn near every time I see and hear Charlie's sister say his name over the phone. The fear is just so raw.

I loved reading this book. And I lost my shit when I found out they were making a movie. Although they changed some things like the song she stands up to in the truck in the tunnel, it's a great love letter to my hometown of Pittsburgh
This is legitimately my favorite book! It got me through a tough time and this movie captured just about everything I loved from the book! Everything about the friendships reminded me of the life that I wanted throughout high school and college. The drama throughout the story seemed grounded and realistic to real life high school. The twist at the end really wrecked me. So many emotions up and down, it all was perfect. Also, having to KO a dude just to be friend with Emma Watson.... I'd 100% do that, no questions asked.
I've never clicked on a reaction so fast. This is one of my all time favorite movies and very rarely has a movie made me feel so deeply. It was so perfectly done.
This movie and the book is the only teen, coming of age story I keep coming back. It found me in a very dark place and it helped me come to terms with some things in my life as well as the need to ask for help. It was also a solid book to movie adaptation
I love this movie, it seems so light hearted at first, and then gets heavy as hell.
This movie was too relatable for me, it made me reanalyze my mental health and why it is important to deal with it sooner rather then let it get worse

I love this movie! I remember the feeling i had when i First watched this and Just a couple of other movies gave me that same feeling. Watching my favorite reactor react to such an important movie for me is truly something really cool! So thank you James!!

I consider this and "Not Fade Away" (for a '60s kid (you can tell by the reviews who wasn't there)) two of the best/smartest/relatable coming of age films I've seen.
This film just draws you in so well and it made me feel a lot of emotions.Logan lerman who plays charlie,ezra miller and paul rudd are the best part for me.And i love charlie he's so sweet amd genuine i wish i was friends with him.If you didn't cry or almost cry idk for you.Mommy(2014) is another great film about relationships

Watching the full length along with you yesterday was like watching it for the first time again. I love this movie so much and even though I know it has its flaws, the good outweighs the bad easily for me, and its definitely one of my all time favourites.

One thing the book also explains is that Charlie was held back (don’t remember what grade) and his birthday is on Christmas Eve, so he’s 15-16 his freshman year instead of 14-15.

In the book during the Christmas gift exchange Charlie read them a poem about a boy killing himself. Later he was told that the poem was a supposed suicide note and he said he didn’t know if he liked it anymore. You can find the scene on UA-cam !

Such a great coming of age film and I remember being surprised at how well this film handles a topic like mental illness when I first watched it! Super emotional film. And yeah Paul Rudd was also great in his role as well. I had a couple of teachers like the one in this film and those really are the teachers that make the most difference in our lives.

I got into Temple but I went to Penn State-Main Campus like one of our main characters. 😁 My cousin and I went to see this movie in theaters and it was only playing in two theaters because it wasn’t mainstream. We had so much fun!
Man you got to read the book too when you get the time..The film definitely did a good job of making the story concise and still not losing the essence of it..The book has lots and lots of details and you get more insight into Charlie's head and mental space and how things are for him..Here we see the things he writes about actually happening..They made a few changes I noticed but still really good...I actually just finished the book this morning and watched the movie for the first time later and now I watched this💖
That blonde who keeps snarking at him in class was clearly jonesin for some 1-on-1 with Charlie time 😂
such an underrated movie. Great acting all around
This film may be universal in many ways, but let me just tell you, if you were an artsy kid who went to high school/college in Pittsburgh and its surrounds, the ambiance and feel of this movie is eerily accurate. Even then color saturation just looks and feels like that place and time. Strangely, in the 90s, when my university got a new theater chair, I remember him commenting back about the remarkable experience of coming through that very tunnel and bursting out to see the city in front of you. Didn't know that a little more than a decade later someone would encapsulate that feeling in a film.
YESSSSS I didnt grow up near Pittsburgh I was more alittle outside of Philly. And even still it has a similar vibe and im glad you talked about color, this movie has a very warm yellow type feel to it. It makes you feel very nostalgic and I wish more movies, especially coming of age would handle it in a similar way. I at some point want to live in Pittsburgh one of these days.
