    Ralph Hardimon wrote this beautiful and lyrical book - tasty buzz rolls. The pit writing is absolutely spectacular.

    @Carlito_Sway Рік тому +22

    This book is such a game-changer, and not just because it's one of the earliest Kevlar snare lines: Ralph's writing grooves SO hard, Glen Crosby's relentless approach polished the execution to a sparkling sheen, and the musicality of the performers and their interpretation of the book is simply timeless. The battery is pushing and pulling time around expressively almost like an orchestra would, but in perfect unison. This is, to me, the essence of what makes Ralph such a great arranger: taste, color, dynamic contrast, big, open rhythms that emphasize half time feels, graceful, fluid parts that FEEL great to play. He is the master of the quarter note triplet!!! Thanks for watching this one.

      @@agedoutpodcast It was a huge change. We played on nothing like that before. Felt like cement. But the sound cut with our snareline that went from 10 to seven. Also, because the shells were not designed for such high tension, we caved many snares, exploded hardware, etc. It was truly experimental. We all came up on mylar and it was smooth and easy (with a natural sound) on the hands. Once we relearned on that surface, it was fine. Way more exposed but fine.

    They are playing on Kevlar heads. They were the first corps to use them in DCI competition this year. Remo Falams as they were called. Correct me if I am wrong, but they were murder to the snare drums themselves. The lugs couldn’t handle the tension and the shells would collapse. At least that is what I remember hearing when I’d hang out with drummer friends back in the day. One of the reasons I believe “floater” snares were created to be able to handle Kevlar heads.

    Since there is already a lot of debate over the snare heads, I'll clarify: They are Kevlar. Based on what I can see/hear, I would say those are "Remo Falams 2 Neutral Marching Snare Top" heads (probably without the clear center dot). If you google the quoted phrase you will find a yellow-ish head ("neutral") that matches what you see in the video.
    Source: Used to work in a drum shop and we had some of those heads leftover from a LONG time ago. I've tried them. They're ok. 😁

      @SgtHulka95 Рік тому +6

      These wouldn't have been the Falams 2 yet, just Falams. The Falams 2 didn't come out for another couple of years when Remo started crimping the heads in the flesh hoop differently as the original heads would pull too easily. That is, if your non-free floater snare drum didn't implode first. ;)

    • @mcgrud
      @mcgrud Рік тому +4

    Some groups still on plastic, but double collared to try to meet the high torque trend. Kevlar was the remedy for shells caving in due to the pressure. Finally the “free floaters” were developed to relieve the pressure from the shell.

    Yeah, these guys were the first one using Kevlar. I still remember seeing those yellow snare batter heads at a show in N.J. No one else in the Top 12 was using them that year, and certainly not the Cadets. We watched the line in the lot prior to the show and it was absolutely electric. The whole line just exuded so much mojo. They were badass and they knew it. Still one of my favorite lines ever. Somewhere I probably still have some cassette recordings from that show, as well as from Allentown, PA that same year. I had audio of the Cadets drum line warming up as well. If I can find those tapes I'll post the audio either on UA-cam or SoundCloud.
    But guys...guys! You're talking right over the exposed snare rolls during the percussion feature!!! That's the part I wanted to hear the most because in the official recording the snares don't sound as clean as I knew they were. PLEASE DON'T TALK AT THOSE MOMENTS! My particular corps was still marching 15 inch Slingerlands with silver dots but not the other corps. After hearing tons of filthy snarelines, I was really beginning to wonder if when we reached KC for finals week, I was going to hear any clean lines at all, even in the top 12. They had kevlars in 87. Tried them during the season in 86 and it was pretty terrible, apparently. But went for it in 87. Just about everyone else followed in 88. Cadets didn't have them until 89 and I think Star of Indiana not until 91. They're tan, because I think they had clear laminate or no laminate. So they look like you're seeing the backside of the drum, but it's actually the head. Notice the difference between the way the snares and tenors look during the solo and it becomes pretty obvious that you're looking at a head on the snares.
