Starbucks stock is way down. I imagine that location was very expensive rent and is the reason the employees stated the location closed= not crime. They just are restructuring. They hired a new ceo for i think 113 mil lol and have mismanaged. Cash himself calls their coffee trash and its overpriced. Starbucks is restructuring and even offering drink specials. NYC is reporting overall crime decline in 2024.

I’ve worked in NYC cafes for 20 years and I can promise you if a coffee shop doesn’t give free water to the homeless or let them use the bathroom, they will not have significant issues.

So, I live in an area that is quite nice and have lived here for over 40 years (essentially my whole life). I haven't been to this one particular book store in over a year, but went three days ago. I noticed that all of the armchairs and couches had been removed, so no more sitting quietly and enjoying yourself with your new book. While I was checking out, a customer popped up and asked the clerk, "What's the code for the bathroom?" and the clerk gave her a quick 4-digit number. Obviously, they have also locked down the restrooms to control who goes in. Although I appreciate safety measures designed to keep control and prevent crime, it's so sad to see these changes. I had heard that the area of town that the bookstore is in has been declining because of crime and drug use, but it's still shocking when I can clearly remember how different it was even 3 years ago! I am so worried about how things will look 3 years in the future....but it's not looking good.

I remember when "defund the police" and "criminal justice reform" was all the sexy political rage. Politicians used to canvas our old neighborhood. I asked one why would I vote to release criminals into my neighborhood with no punishment. He told me to go and talk to the criminals. Some just need a good mentor. In fact here in Seattle the first ever Starbucks (accross from Pike Place Market) closed its doors recently.
It was a shock to most people. That place always had a line out the door. It was a major tourist attraction, but......... the crime, homelessness, violence was too much and the cops were doing NOTHING!!!

Even, the Starbucks near my job closed last (?) year. Too much crime, where people would come breaking into people’s cars as they went in to get coffee. Raising Canes right next to it, they had to ban indoor dining for the same reason. Also, to say non violent crimes have no victims is the stupidest thing ever. In Hong Kong we are limited with our space. A lot of coffee shops are order and pick up only. Starbucks could have downsized and solved 90% of their problems.

Starbucks here in PH is popping up like McDonalds. The city near where I live has 7 starbucks coffee shops in total. (Which is not even a business district)
In Philadelphia it's been known my entire life that if your not a paying customer you can't use their restroom. Starbuck's decided to back the non paying customers 'racism' claims and sent their emplyees to be 're-educted'. Not long after Starbuck's had the bathrooms open to the homeless, let them park their shopping carts at the door, handed out free ice water and let the homeless come in to stay warm.. Soon after Starbuck's closed, as did the rest of the block including the University. Philadelphia city council was upset.

That's very true! My friend's store was attacked in Harlem & the perpetrator hit that man behind the counter on his face w a gun. Injured his eye badly & took off w money. Although they have everything on the camera, their is no desire to go public. It's just a waste of time. No hope to find the perpetrator either. Police couldn't care less. Nobody is prosecuting anyway. My point is that these types of things are happening every day, but it's not recorded as a crime statistic or shown on TV. I holidayed in New York in 2004 for my 50th birthday. I remember the times I would walk back to my Midtown hotel from the Lincoln Centre near midnight. There were so many cops on the street I felt safer in NY than I ever did in any of the big UK cities I have lived in like Glasgow, Manchester or Leeds. Rudy Giuliani had really cleaned up the city. So sad to see how it has declined since. But this is what you get when you vote woke politicians into power. It is amazing how so many people can never see the connection. This kind of disaster is happening here in the UK. London has descended into violent chaos and the architect of this is the mayor, Sadiq Khan. But he keeps on getting reelected.

I visited Manhattan in July for the 1st time since 2012. Very short visit but it was obvious the area we visited had gone down hill. Our hotel concierges said since Covid, NYC took a nosedive and it is getting worse. In the touristy area we were at, at least 1/2 were homeless and or immigrants with nothing to do. All we could smell was a mix of pot and piss. We saw 2 human dumps on the sidewalk. We will not be going back.

He lived on 68th b.w 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th. his area was very nice back thes I normally stayed with him for 2 weeks in the summer and the week right after xmas.. i do recall times square and the surrounding area being full of prostitutes, drug dealers and xxx. After he moved away from NYC, I only went there a few times over the next 20 years and it got better and better. now it seems to have fallen back and if NYC does not do something, it will be back where it was.

Honestly, landlords are cretins at times. I worked for a restaurant chain and during Covid the landlord decided to raise the rent despite our company telling them we wanted a rent reduction as we were loosing money. The landlord apparently not only refused but was also quite rude. As a result, taking advantage of covid, the company closed down the stores with that landlord and rendered other stores that had lowered their rent and used the fact that no client was going out to fix the restaurant. The landlord lost at least 4 locations that were with us. Many of those stores are still empty today.

That is added into your mortgage cost and after your mortgage is paid off you still have to pay the city $1000 every month paid quarterly. Apartment building owners pay thousands per month in taxes regardless if they are fully rented or vacant. What are the chances of your 10 unit apartment building being occupied and all of your tenant paying you on time? Lol. The city has to get their money regardless so the landlord has to charge the tenants who are paying even more just to cover the rent lost by squatters just to cover their property taxes. All of the problems in this city are caused by the corrupt government.
