  • I have hit 1000 miles on my new 2018 Harley Davidson Heritage 114. I have had some close calls, some near misses, but otherwise it has been a very successful 3 weeks.

    I just got my first motorcycle 5 days ago and I got the same exact bike. I weigh 130 pounds and I handle it perfectly. The first 2 days was difficult but after that it was easy! It doesn’t matter how big the motorcycle is, it’s the technique. Love my 2018 heritage classic 114

    I know this video is over a year old, but I'm a new rider as well. I have a 2019 Road King 107. This is week 3 of riding for me. So far I love it. I'm out in the far east valley and bought it to commute to work (59 mile round trip). I've seen your newer videos, great content!

      Hey thanks I appreciate that. I love the Road King too. I’m East Valley too (not far tho haha). I have a 25 mile commute every day on the 202 and HOV it on the bike which saves a ton of time. Love my Heritage but would have also loved a Road King too.

      Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale thanks. I have been riding pretty much every day to work. Also had a work trip back and forth from Chandler to Buckeye that was a nice ride. I am loving this Heritage. Scott Craig hooked me up with the right bike!!
      Now who do I talk to about a H-D of Scottsdale sponsored 1000 mile service video? 😉

    What other bikes did you consider before deciding on the Heritage? ai'm looking at the Heritage, Street Bob, and a Triumph Bonneville T120.

    Wow, really nice first bike, and you picked the best color option for that year too and engine!

      Thanks, I love this bike. I love this denim paint job and the red is just incredible looking. The 114 is also a huge selling point, this bike has some serious pull for being over 700 lbs its really a quick bike. I love ALMOST everything about it but the things I would change would be pretty minor.

    Thanks for the detailed videos! New subbie! Just purchased my 2018 Heritage in Vivid Black so I’ll definitely be watching and looking forward to any upgrades!

      Thanks I appreciate it. You will love the Heritage. It has been a great bike so far. Did you pick it up already or do they need to get it from a warehouse? Have you ridden yet?

    I live in Scottsdale and have the same bike! I use a mesh jacket. When it’s really hot I use a hydration vest and a cooling tee shirt. I also have a helmet liner that you wet to keep cool. This allows me to ride up to 110. I also take the windshield off when it is hot.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  6 років тому

      Thanks for the input. I will go grab one of those hydration vests. I didn’t know they existed. I haven’t gone without the windshield yet because I’m constantly on the 101. I might give no windshield a shot this weekend. I love this Heritage though, I am happy I didn’t go with the road king or street glide, this bike is really well behaved, easy to ride, and the 114 has a ton of power. Really happy. Thanks for watching. Ride safe!!

      I grew up on dirt bikes as a kid also. Dad taught us with those which was great, in my opinion, because you really learn all the ins, outs and nuances of bike control without traffic or other hazards to contend with. All the get-offs you learn with are mostly on soft dirt. Best way to learn IMHO.
      I was gonna recommend the same things Doug Faigel did. I live in Indio, CA and we get temps up over 120 in the summer and the only way to extend our winter riding season into summer is with a mesh jacket, hydration vest, hydration neck scarf and skull cap. Fingerless gloves are decent but levers can get molten hot in the sun so I'm looking at a pair of full-fingered Harley ones. Rode 200 miles today in over 100 degrees and all of it worked like a charm. Circulator pad for seat will prevent "swamp-ass" from the sweat on a long ride too. Got that today, in fact. Ride safe!!

    I have a 114 Heritage, too. Don't know about it being the perfect first bike for everyone, but it may be the perfect first bike for you. It is also a perfect advanced bike for a lot of people. Like you said, it ticks all the boxes, has all the power, and there is pretty much nothing it can't do. Okay maybe deep sand. Haven't tried that. You might be a little bit spoiled. Gonna be hard to upgrade from here.

    Totally dig that jacket. Part number?

      It is this one but I have the removable panels off which converts it into a really well ventilated mesh jacket.

    You're a new rider and you started out on a heritage 114? I myself am looking to get my first bike, everyone tells me to start out on a smaller engine bike, I was going to do that and then graduate to a heritage, but you have inspired me to change my mind lol, you never owned another bike before this?

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  6 років тому +2

      I haven’t ever owned any other bike before this. I used to ride little dirt bikes when I was a kid but no motorcycles. The Heritage 114 has been a great bike for ME to learn on. As long as you ride careful and don’t mash the throttle, I find it has been fine to learn on. It’s a great bike to grow with too because as you get more comfortable you can access more power. I won’t get bored with this bike. If you feel like your going to be a meathead then I recommend a smaller bike, if you have a little self control then go for the Heritage. My biggest “mistakes” so far have been at slow speed parking and the weight getting too heavy here and there, I keep telling myself to put the engine guards on but I haven’t so far. I have 1200 miles on it and no drops, I love it.

      Do a riders course. Then an advance course after you get your bike. Ride smart and don’t speed.

    Dan, think your helmet choice is a smart choice I'm looking at new helmets myself. But I'm curious as to why you went with black living where you do. It would seem lighter colors would be a choice to help reduce the heat. Jacket looks great too. I like them both just colors seem like they would heat up faster than lighter colors.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  6 років тому

      The helmet color isn’t as important, the thick layer of foam on the inside is similar to a cooler where there is so much separation between the black shell and your head that it really doesn’t make a difference, I’ve seen that somewhere before and I believe it, it hasn’t been a problem even riding in 115 degrees I’ve been fine. The jacket also hasn’t been a problem, I find I’m cooler with a black jacket on then I am in a T-shirt with no jacket on. The only time it gets to be real toasty is the couple times I’ve gotten stuck at a light for a couple cycles because my bike didn’t trigger the sensor. If I were to go white helmet, it wouldn’t be for heat benefits, it would be for safety benefits. Thanks for watching!!
