This video is about my Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage 114 ride out to Paris Texas for the Bring it Home Parade. That trip took me 2,385 Miles in just over 5 days from Pheonix, Arizona to Moyers, Oklahoma and back. I wanted to share the journey and hopefully people can learn from my experience.

Glad to hear that you had a good time and learned a few distance riding lessons. I rode my Street Glide Glide from Maryland to Tucson and it was a great time. Got caught in a few rain storms along the way and I had to do the same thing, make the decision to pull over or continue to ride. I continued as long as I could see and wasn’t fight waves of water! Riding in the rain is okay as long as you don’t ride beyond your skill level.
I absolutely agree. To be totally honest, I was definitely riding beyond most peoples skill level at one point just trying to blast out of a terrifying situation. It certainly wasn't smart but at the time seemed like the only thing I could control at the moment. Really those long trips you just need to know when to cut your losses and I paid for not sleeping on the sidewalk where I was safe and venturing into the unknown. That was a very valuable lesson I learned and wont make that mistake again. Thanks for watching, appreciate the comment!!

I have a shoe modular with a visor insert shield. I don't wear glasses but my shield will not and has never fogged up in rain and I've ridden through some serious downpours! getcha one you wont regret it!
I have the pinlock too which never fogs, unfortunately I switched visors before I left and forgot the pinlock so I was screwed.
Glad to hear you made it safe. Storms like that are why I now carry my 3/4 open face helmet as well as my full face helmet. I also wear glasses so when it starts storming I put my 3/4 open face on. It allows lots of air flow so my glasses don’t fog and keeps the rain off my glasses.

Great trip Dan, I'd have given anything to be able to make it,that must have been an awesome feeling indeed to be surrounded by that many other riders, and doing it all for charity. I'd love to meet Maxwell myself, his channel really sparked me getting back into riding again after 30+ years--glad to hear he's as nice a guy as he seems.
Looked quite a bit dodgy during the storm, but glad to see you made it ok--lessons learned I guess, definitely got to give you props for that long ride in the rain, just always use your best judgement and be safe out there!. Plans change, and advance planning does not always hold true. You definitely made some memories that will last forever though, so that's a good thing :)

Gears & Gadgets Charleston, SC to Columbus, GA. Rode rest of way in with Maxwell and crew.
After the Parade, rode to Springfield, MO to visit mom for a several days then to Memphis to visit brother and finally high-tailed it back to Charleston between the showers which were right on my ass the whole way home.
I want to do a ride like this. But I’m having a hard time getting back in the horse. I got hit a year and a half ago. I’m good. The bike is good. But I got this feeling everyone is trying to kill me. I need someone to say suck it up. Nice video. Glad you shared.
I give you credit for toughing the long ride out especially in that cold rain storm! Been their done that so I fully understand your experience. I always find the ride back home is more taxing then the ride up to my destination. Hope you can do a little review on how you liked the Heritage, I am considering one myself.
The ride back for me was actually more enjoyable because I had less weather and longer riding days that were just kind of nice. My 10 1/2 hour day to Albuquerque got a little long after the 8th or 9th hour but wasn't terrible.

Dang dude you went a long way but worth it. Riding in the rain - no big deal UNLESS you have to ride in the same stuff the next day LOL. Glad everything dried out for ya. I was there, we'll have to make it a point to meet up should paths cross at another ride or rally. Ride safe man. T

Yeah I saw that story about the guy getting struck by lightning. I already have a healthy respect for lightning to begin with, so seeing someone on a bike killed is enough to stick with me. The new Commander 2's held up AWESOME, especially in the rain. I couldn't have been happier. Also, I was incredibly happy that my workmanship held up lol.

I set my highway pegs really low. You can use them like a stirrup on a horse . That way you can flex your leg muscles and raise your ass up off the seat for awhile and it sends blood to the leg muscles. I dunno if you get what I'm saying but it helps a lot. By putting them down low it pushes you up rather than pushing you backwards when you put leg pressure on them. Imagine sitting on a horse and standing up in the stirrips. You adjust them to where you can raise up a half inch off the saddle or so when you stand up. It works on bikes too. Flexes leg muscles and sends blood back to them and the ass too. It helps a lot with leg fatigue. I've never known anyone else who does it but being a horse rider myself I tried it and it works. Now all my freinds do it too. You want them low and where leg is almost straight when foot is on them but when you flex and push down on them you feel pressure go away on your ass . Hold that position awhile and it refreshes you 👍

Yeah that storm was a hot mess. Going through it at night was not a fun experience. I was just happy to get off the road.
Your trip to the Kriver sounded exactly like my trip back to Wisconsin. I put on about 2000 miles from Friday thru Sunday. If I ever do another trip like this I will definitely take more time. 870 miles in a day, each way was way too much.
Yeah 870 mile days are crazy 730 is the most that I did. I'm sure I could have hammered out an extra 140 miles to match you but I wouldnt want to lol. A trip like that is either more days, or trailering for me.

The name of the app is "My Lightning Tracker & Alerts" This isn't sponsored just an app I found in a pinch that worked really well and brought a little peace of mind. It starts to alert you when lighting is striking and you can tell it how far away you want it to start alerting you. It was potentially a life saver.

Great vid! Can you comment on how the bike did on this long trip? Most I've ridden in a day was 400 miles on mostly non-highways riding a road king and I was pretty drained, mentally and a little physically. You think the heritage is as good or almost as good on long trips like this?

Hello! Im on the market for a bike like yours, my wife and I are interested on making some trips this year. The only thing that worries me on these bikes are the spoked wheels (tubed tyres) Have you ever had any problems with these tyres? My main concern is that we get a puncture on the road at highway speeds, loosing control of the bike and fall. How has your experience been traveling with this kind of tires so far?
All fair points. I’m not really worried about a catastrophic blowout anymore than I would be with a tubeless. My only concern with the tube tire is the inability to patch it on the road if it does go flat. It’s a reasonable concern that is something that stays in the back of my mind BUT it is a really solid bike. Bigger concern I would have is if you intend on doing a lot of 2-Up, I would highly recommend a touring bike. My wife has ridden on my bike only a few times around town and it’s fine for that, but long distance I think you would be pushing the softail platform suspension limits especially if you stated adding luggage. It can do it, but might not be the best option for that use case in my opinion.

Awesome video... I myself own a 2019 Harley Heritage Classic question, how did you do on stock seat? Mine was an ass kicker on a 1800 mile trip.
For that long of a trip I bought the air hawk seat which I wasn’t sure if it worked or not but since I didn’t have any complaints I’m guessing it did the job. I don’t use the air hawk for around town but I certainly would for another long haul.
You can't get struck by lightning on your bike or in any vehicle. Rubber is an insulator and your not grounded.
Lightning is caused by a over normal positive charge in the clouds and a negative charge deep in the ground.
Grounding rods, trees, grounded buildings carry the current deep into the ground where the negative charge is higher than on the surface. Lightning will strike a tree or light pole before it strikes you.
Just don't put your foot down and you'll be fine.
Tip your head down a little then open the visor. The rain will not come in as bad.
The water that does come in if any will hit the chin portion of your helmet.

Didn't think about tire depth. I guess it could jump along the frame to the ground.
The being "Safer in a car than standing outside" you don't think about things like that but a least your lower to the ground than the power poles trucks etc.
Either way you don't want to be near a strike when it happens.
It's deafening and blinding, but I think you'd be safe enough to ride a bike in a storm. Just stay along the same path as other taller and grounded items to deter the lightning away.
Friend got hit by lightning on his bicycle. Melted the tires and seat burnt his butt. Made NYC papers.
I have seen lightening destroy a truck. It will strike, and can kill anything it touches.
Not.a big deal.i do more than that.every year . On those new motors you better have it checked out now they have a sump issue in them
Can you describe the sump issue? It will help me know if I need to get mine checked out
I haven't had any sumping issues. Based on Service Bulletin M1450, it looks like any bike born after 10/10/2017 had new oil pumps that solved that issue. My bike was manufactured 02/18.
@@GearsGadgets i have 2 club brothers both have 2018 and both haveing sump issues and i have a friend who has 2019 just had to have his motor rebuilt
@@chrisdawson8252 yes top.end loss of power there are oil bolts in the crank case that fail.and plug up so oil cant flow and creates heat and oil sump whole.motor has to be rebuilt and basically all the new ones have the same problem if your not an everyday rider you wont notice it ride the bike around for a little bit than from a stop punch it and see what it does
