      Hey. Yeah I just demoed the JBL 308 mkii and Adams. Adams have depth, JBL sound stage width. Think I like JBL...But curious: OK. I see I can add a preamp to them, and was thinking of the Freya by Schiit Audio, and get some kind of network player, like Sonos, or something else and have it through an external DAC, and these through the preamp. I think that would be ok. Yes? Comments?
      BTW. I am doing this because can't afford much of anything at this time. My goal is to go separate: Amp. Pre. DAC/Network either thru computer or external device, and CD ripper/player. And a pair of Passive Speakers: S400 probably. But like Klipsch Hersey lll, or JBL Studio 509 or Stage 109.
      So main objective is to just get something going. But I also would like the JBL MKll with Freya operate as my left and right speakers for TV watching. How would I do this without getting a video processor? I was looking at the Outlaw HDS 12i HDMI splitter. Comments?

    I love my set and use my DBX Go-Rack for the sub synth. Happy to finally be fully XLR. I got them on a fire sale for 152 for the pair so I knew I couldn't go wrong. Thanks for all the good recommendations over the years. My brother is running his through TRS and was able to reduce his hiss using a $10 ground loop isolator.

    The best way to receive the balanced signal with less electrical noise is with less DAC and with less conversions, from a professional studio computer audio card(example: Creative E-MU 1212M PCIe) with balanced outputs to the speakers or to a professional studio monitors controller.

  • @J-Chea

    The hiss could be fixed by removing the ground pin on the power cord. I've done this on the JBL LSR305 and it completely fixes the hissing. I suppose these are sensitive to ground noise. A better way would be to use a ground isolator to keep the ground pins. Most power monitors has some kind of hissing issue if the power circuit wasn't designed to isolate the noise.

    • @stevenswall
      @stevenswall 5 років тому

      Seriously? That's crazy. One of the reasons I returned the larger version of this monitor was because of the hissing. I wish I had known to try that.

    you can also hook these up to a intergrated amp like the denon pma-720ae and then u also can use the tone controls and you have a remote control and more line inputs to hook other gear up with. but my question is are the mackie mr624 better then these jbl,s for general listening in a stereo setup in a living room without needing a sub ?

  • @BrianMWPG
    @BrianMWPG 3 роки тому +1

    I'd be interested to see if you could review the 8" JBL 308p MKII , with the older LSR308's the mid-range is lacking compared with the LSR305, the low-end was better, but the mid was subdued enough most things being listened to just weren't as good. I'd also seen some other reviews find a dip in the 1.4 to 1.5 KHz range (likely around the cutoff between) that wasn't there in the 305p MKII

    In your main room there, what’s your main setup? Forgive me, I’ve watched a few of your videos now, and I see the retracted projector screen and many speakers laying around. Do you actually have a home theatre setup? I don’t mean to be offensive at all, just curious. I’m curious to know what your fixed setup for home theatre if so, actually is? Thanks😀👍🏻

    I bought a pair of JBL 306 MKII studio monitor 3 days ago, i find speakers volume is too low even after keeping 100% volume in my computer and sound card. To be exact, i got 0 to 10 gain level in each speaker . So in my speakers volume is starting only after 2 gain level, below that its mute and good volume is coming only after 6+ gain level.
    So is that a manufacturing defect or its normal ? Do i need to replace it from the seller ?

    Mr. Z your fascination with MiniDSP is very healthy, yet I would like to bring to your attention that in the same price range as Dirac equipped MiniDSP DDRC-24 there is also MartinLogan Unison equipped with Anthem's ARC room correction.
    I think that this Unison may be the best TV soundbar killer when combined with any of the studio monitors you are recommending in this video.

  • @slaving300

    If you are using the ENOG2 Pro connected to a PC there are too many DACs and more electrical noise in the signal, the hard drive looks for that file and that digital data in the hard disk becomes analog and passes through the cable (electrical pulses)through the motherboard then through a processor, then the mobo chipset has to read that analog signal from the processor and then send it to a DAC on the integrated or external audio card, then that signal(Toslink conector then SPDIF signal) is converted to digital and the ENOG receives it; if you see, there's too many conversions, means more electrical noise and more interference in the signal.

    So for someone who is dissatisfied with rokit 5's bass response (I make tech house) would these speakers be a viable alternative? Also - do front bass ports affect bass response accuracy in a small room? I noticed that these don't have front facing ports as opposed to my Rokits. Would be curious how these would perform against a wall.
    btw this dude is hilarious subbed

    @Z What signal chain did you use? I found out that (for my LSR 305) the hissing is caused by my USB DAC (shared ground is my guess). If I feed them signal from my phone for example, no noticeable hissing. Can you try feeding them signal from your phone or a portable amp/dac and let the plebs know if that changes anything?

    Semi related, has anyone had experience with getting minor plastic defects on the membrane of the speaker in the JBLs? One of mine has a few little 'dots'/'lumps' of plastic that seen like a manufacturing defect but I never got around to looking into sending them back.

      USB noise? Plug them into another circuit in the house? Also IFI makes a USB isolator

    • @BlurredWolf
      @BlurredWolf 5 років тому

      @@ZReviews Probs some kind of USB noise, only comes through the speakers (not headphones). I bought an MPOW in-line ground loop isolator which fixed the problem but it has really crappy 3.5mm ports that keeping cutting out 1 or both channels. I should probably try fiber optic source from PC to see if that helps. I have several other issues with the G2 like a static crack every time I turn on audio after there has been silence for a while (the frequency light turns off after like 10-20 seconds so I assume the DAC is entering some kind of standby mode automatically that causes the crackle when it 'wakes up' from it). Also there is a pot issue at around the '2pm' position on the knob where the volume seems to suddenly jump up a step, almost like hitting a gain switch.

    • @stevenswall
      @stevenswall 5 років тому

      I like the Lola better than the Roxanne or Layla. After going to a few headphone and audio conventions, it sounded as good or better than most anything else, including flagship over ears. Maybe a Focal Clear I'd like as much, the Utopia was a letdown, and maybe the new Sennheiser HD800, but even with those I'd be sacrificing some bass, which is really defined and tight with balanced armatures, and iems are great for reducing background noise.
      Other than sound, they are also more portable.
      Soundstage wise, sure, some headphones sound like they are out from your ear more, but it's very little compared to speakers. Instead of worrying about having 1% of a normal soundstage be 5-10% with a massive over ear, I'd rather have something that does everything else better and it practical, and then work on a speaker setup.
      Also note: I started with the custom version of the Monitor, and had them re-fit it twice. Never really felt comfortable to me, and always seemed too big... The universal fits me better than the customs ever did.
      If I did it a second time I'd just go universal unless its a softer materiel. If you like laying down in bed, and also being able to stand up with IEM's, acrylic shells may not be the best because your ear canal changes slightly when you change position.

    Well, I just bought these JBL Monitors and I am not happy with the volume output running them straight to my Dell XPS 15 Laptop. Yes, the setup is "unbalanced" but the max volume of the speakers are nothing compared to my Klipsch 2.1 system. The quality of the sound is amazing but I need more volume. Is there a way to amplify the volume considerably? I also want to add the subwoofer to the system if I can get the volume issue solved. I am new to this "Monitor" type of audio system so any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

    MiniDSP vs DDRC-24? Is Dirac worth twice the price?

    • @HungryCheff
      @HungryCheff 5 років тому +2

      Ok, i'll answer that because i own the DDRC-24... YES! OMG, YES! DIRAC does miracles.

    • @HungryCheff
      @HungryCheff 5 років тому +1

      A few things that are important to note though are:
      1)The MiniDSP HD doesn't have a great DAC (Compared to my Questyle CMA400i so your milage may vary), and going analog is not recommended because it sounds worse and adds another conversion
      2)You need to buy the UMIK-1 separately with the ddrc-24 and other mics do not work.
      3)DIRAC does more in small rooms because small rooms most of the time have more peaks and room modes.

    • @Macias
      @Macias 5 років тому

      @@HungryCheff Thanks for answering. I just realized that i can upgrade MiniDSP do DDRC any time. Simple firmware upgrade and Dirac license.
      Getting MiniDSP and flashing it later to DDRC is only 5$ more than buying DDRC at start.
      I think i'll try MiniDSP first.

    Another conundrum. Look at all those links. Anyone saying the studio monitor pick is cut and dry is crazy! I had the JBL 305s. For me at least the Emotiva Airmotiv 6s made it easy for me. It was dynamics and fullness that won me over. Adams were out of my price range. Now you have these, and all the Zeos talked about here. The Airmotivs are gone. Emotiva Audio will make new versions coming. Just don't know when. The Mackies, Yamahas, JBLs, and other ones contrasted directly here would be strong candidates. Believe or not I am set on the Airmotivs. If anything, I am looking for powered surrounds to go with my Emotiva XMC-1 processor and SVS SB13 subwoofer and Stealth 6 speakers in the front stage. I would like to keep all the Emotiva together, but struggle with the other speakers taking the Airmotiv 6s because the 6s is so good for what I want in my project studio and music listening. Wow a conundrum.
