    Nico you did awesome! Randy would be proud! Next, maybe you can analyze Jake E. Lee's solo on Lightning Strikes. That is quite an unheralded Ozzy tune, of course. I think it's one of the best songs on The Ultimate Sin.

    This song and I don't know made me start playing guitar, Randy was an incredible guitar player after hearing them two songs I went and bought the album blizzard of oz and I was off and running instantly obsessed to hear more and start playing myself I was around 10 years old completely changed the type of music I was listening to before that still a metal head 40 years later and jamming

    S.A.T.O. is actually an acronym for Satan's Army Takes Over.
    Just kidding. I returned to the eighties where bands like Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne lyrics were ripped apart by the moral majority.
    Thanks for being the coolest guitar instructor on YT.

    Randy had truly great melodic sense and structure to his guitar solos... which is what makes them all so memorable (and he recorded these eternal classics at such a young age). Hearing the guitar solo to Over the Mountain late 1981-early '82 turned me into a music fan and a Rhoads fanatic. He has always been my favorite guitar player, bar none.

    All these albums/songs you are analysing and deliver to us so pefrectly, I was there when each one of them came out. Lots of youtubers and journalists are interested on the part of gossip. Did Eddie Van Halen like Randy? Did Gary Moore like any of these two and so forth. All I know is that we had a decade in the 80's where we had to struggle to keep up with the flow of really great music. You had a great album coming out almost every 15 days. We had analog players, you had to be careful not to scratch the vinyl and make it look like ice hockey ground. I don't miss the technology or the luck of it in the 80's but I surely miss the drive and the excitement of music blooming. And it was n't just metal. New wave in Europe was great, pop was good and friendly, not aggressive, soft and likeable not the first choice but really soothing and entertaining. Somehow one genre was pushing the other, competing yes, but really in a productive way. Funniest thing is OZZY is still alive, god bless him, what a DNA...

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  3 місяці тому

      Gossip is a lot easier to digest than a video like this so I don't know if that's what they're interested in or if that's more of a necessary evil to keep the view count up so that the channel thrives and allows for better content overall... I know if I had to count on UA-cam to pay my bills I would have shut this down a long time ago! 😅
      But I do agree with you that there was an excitement about all this music that was very unique and even as fans, we had this feeling of gratitude just for the fact that all of this existed and we were alive at the right time and place to witness it!
      That's a big part of why I make videos like these... A solo like this one isn't just good because it's got some cool licks. Every note has a reason for being there and it's worth taking the time to study. 😊

      We know Gary was a huge fan of Randy's he talked about him in an interview on youtube, and of course did a tribute to him.
      We could have known what Ed thought but he was weird about participating in the Rhoads documentary that fell apart.
      Ozzy is a bag who needs to come clean on it being a band and paying people

    Randy as great of a lead player as he was, he was a fantastic rhythm player. And it seems a common description of Randy's solos are "song within a song"

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  3 місяці тому +3

      He did seem to favor that type of solo over the "play some licks over the chords of the chorus" variety. Both have their function, of course, but the song within a song type tends to be more interesting musically 😊

    Randy was about to begin his classical lessons I believe he had already mastered above grade four in those lessons (which is about half way to thev op). Could be wrong but the royal conservatory grades in this way "csnada" as far as I remember. I was ten years old then so being 66 my memory may be failing me lol . Anyway, imagine his sound if he was able to accomplish his goals?

    I remember reading that a few of the solos on Diary (including this one), were just filler solos. In other words, they were never intended to be the final solo, but they were in a rush to release the album so Randy didn't get to do the solo as he intended. To be honest, that's what it sounds like to me. Definitely not his best work.

      there is no such as no feeling, that is nonsense. Anyone who knows anything about Rhoads knows the first thing he emphasized was feeling...he always told the band to play with more feeling.
      This sounds like a learned guitar player doing an amazing solo that is very subtle in its genius. He used some of the things from this solo and put them in other songs as well.
      The guy had 4 weeks to write, rehearse and record an album that became an absolutely masterpiece.

    If you google top metal solos of all-time, top 10, you will often see Randy with multiple entrees and Crazy Train, Flying high again (his brother's favorite), Mr. Crowley..both solos
    A lot of people think the best solos Randy played were live versions of the songs, including Children of the Grave. There is no wrong answer. Randy was a musician whose solos were naturally melodic and were a song within the song. Some of those scratch solos on DOAM are great too, him just jamming as they record the bass and drum tracks.
