    The costs to RV in a Class A Diesel Pusher can be all over the map! The length, brand and year of the rig you select will GREATLY affect each and every item you need to think about. As just one example, I will tell you how our two years on the road full time has turned out in our 2014 Newmar Dutch Star Model 4369 that we bought used in June of 2017.
    First year was more than the second year to get everything “ship-shape”. We expect the third year to be high as well, because it will be starting with replacing 6 tires.
    So in the first year:
    We needed all new (10) batteries because they were shot. (Bought Lifelines) = $2500
    Needed to fully service chassis, as I had poor records from previous owner = $2300
    Major slide issues, Oasis service, jack maintenance, roof sealing, etc. = $7300
    Belts, Trans Oil, Dash A/C charged, Coach Wt, Coolant, Dash electronics = $1300
    New Front Tires and Tyron Tire Bands = $3350
    First year out grand total, to get "Ready to Roll",........ at $16,750 Whew!!
    Our second year out, our maintenance costs ended up lower =$7000
    This is the year discussed in our "Costs to Full Time RV” Travel video.
    Our third year out we will get the remaining 6 tires at $4800 plus whatever else!

    This was very interesting, even though I have no intention of going full-time RVing. I like their honesty and how they don't sugarcoat the expenses, which should be appreciated by all who intend to get into this lifestyle. Beyond that, they seem like a really cool couple that I would love to spend time with!

    Please don't be embarrassed about putting your whole financial life out on here you sure opened up a lot of peoples eyes who think that it's cheap to just buy a Motor home and travel. You two are doing what a lot of us would love to do but, can't afford too do, you sure are very straight forward and honest about what it does really cost to RV full time, and a lot of us really thank you for this info. You're a very honest couple for opening up like this to us. You really opened up my eyes to the real cost of full time RVing.

      Thanks CC. We figured we would put out our actual numbers so folks can decide for themselves where they can improve, or change, or delete costs to make it work for them if they desire to travel like we do. And as you pointed out, if I had my dream machine, a Prevost Conversion,.....I would be looking for even fancy places! That will be my NEXT life........

    My biggest single expense is Federal Income Tax. Boooo As far as Thousand Trails goes in 9 years at 30 to 40 dollars per night (location dependent) I have saved more that $54,000 over the costs of my memberships and dues. One year in particular I decided to try to stay at Thousand Trails to the maximum. I left Michigan October 1, 2016 went south of course, then west as I wanted to spend the summer in Washington State, which I did. On October 1, 2017 I was in Benson Arizona and had spent just a little over $1000 on RV Sites which included my $566 Thousand Trails dues for the year. I have never boondocked or stayed in a parking lot of any sort. BTW there are 4 Thousand Trails parks in Wisconsin. The Trails Collection adds another 100+ Encore parks for $199 a year. I do not have the Trails Collection. I have put a total of 160000 miles on the Truck I use for towing. Of those miles 62,000 have been towing my home on wheels. I domicile in South Dakota, the best state not live in.

    That was the best and most detailed budget presentation I have watched on UA-cam. It best details the cost of living the RV life style. This helps people evaluate what it is really like to full time. Your choice to have a large class A puts you in the high end of expenses due to size limitations. You also tend to move a lot. Both costly but perhaps more enjoyable if you can afford it. Great contribution to the RV community and potential RV buyers.

      Thanks for the kind words and stopping by! We are going to make a few changes this year, but expect the same outcome due to some planned tire purchases, and upgrades. It's the price of entry and admission to this life. We published these slightly "embarrassing" numbers to help others realize how it can add up. We only publish once per week, because we know our subscribers time is valuable. Episodes are usually of our travels to places we think others would enjoy to see. Next Sunday is our last three adventures in Salt Lake City Utah before heading northeast to North Dakota for the FMCA Rally in Minot ND.

    Great job! Really enjoyed it and especially the detail. I don't RV but I love living vicariously thru you. Miles! GREAT NAME. The depreciation really is the only depressing thing about RVing that you need to "make peace" with. It is actually a double whammy. The money you paid is draining away. In a house the money would be appreciating. The key to this crazy life is to understand, you really can't have it both ways. This lifestyle is not for everyone, but make no mistake, it really is something to behold if you are ready for the ride.

      It a big decision to start this life full time after a more normal "secure" stick and brick life. Glad to help provide the real life numbers for folks to decide if it will work for them. It is so worth it for the change and adventure in one's life. BUT,......you need to know,. ...that it is only cheap if you are just going "somewhere budget friendly" to live in an RV. If you are actually going to be touring and TRAVELING in an RV to specific, popular places, in warm climates when it is cold elsewhere,....you will be paying the premium for that privilege and blessing. We are very thankful to be able to do this.

    Thank you Thank you. I was under the misconception that I could afford to travel like this, stop when I wanted, go where I wanted. When I saw the price of Myles my planes vanished. Even though I own my home in Cincinnati, if I sold it, I probably could only afford a converted Volkswagen bus. I am just totally shocked at the amount of maintenance you have. The FEEs also shocked me. You are clearly out of my
    league, although I HAD considered us upper-middle class with 6 figure income, NO DEBT, and some savings, also about 6 figures. Now I realize we will continue to live in our house and drive wherevever we want and stay overnight in hotels. I think I will view some other videos like this. You have been the most honest person so far. I hope you have many many more "myles" and a very Merry Christmas.

      Hey John. Didn't mean to discourage you. These simply are our costs, with a late model, large, fancy unit, with an old guy driving it that can't fix anything himself! Many folks do it way different than we do. There are many excellent YT channels reporting other travel styles. Check out the channel "I'm Not Lost I'm RVing" episode entitled "The Truth About How Much It Cost To Live & Travel Full-Time In An RV!" Good luck,...

      @@OurJourneyInMyles I am retired now 5 full years. I shod draft horses for 47 years. Closed the doors and bought a 27 ft travel trailer used. 2016 and paid $11,000. I owned my pickup out right. Medical doesn't cost me anything. I am a disabled vet and receive $879. every month on the 31rst and my social security check $1,252.00 each month on the 2nd Wed. giving me $2,131.0 steady income every month. I bought a college apartment washer and spin dryer for $107. and when done the clothes are 95% dry so a short warm day on a clothes line has them ready to fold and put away. I have had this washer for over 2 years going into year 3. It has paid back the $107. many many times over compared to the expense of a laundry mat. Being a Vet (Vietnam) I get medical for free and medication for free because my income slides under the line for co-pay. 2012 I had open heart surgery to replace my aorta valve and didn't have to pay one penny. Medicare and the VA covered the bills. I can go to any VA hospital in any city or state all over the USA. I go to an area I like and set up for a month or more. This way I can see all I want and this time period allows me to receive 2 more checks and replenish my costs of traveling. I keep 3 to $5,000. in my savings for unexpected. I also am able to add to that each month because my cost of living is low. A month aof groceries runs between $250. and $300. a month. I buy my water by the case and usually runs around $4.00 a case. My trailer will be paid in full by April reducing one more monthly expense. I do continue to pay this bill but it now goes into my savings . In other words I am comfortable living the way I do so instead of blowing this extra money I save it. I keep my truck up on all maintenance and keep my tires good so it actually saves me money from breakdowns. I have triple a "PLUS" which means if I do break down, they will tow my truck but also tow my trailer. I pay this in full for the year. I like staying in campgrounds rather than boondocking or walmarts. By staying at least a mnth I get a better rate than if I paid daily and I am in a safe environment with full hook ups. I have owned a class A (an old one) 2 5th wheels and a slide in camper so I am comfortable with most situations. For the person who said it was too expensive to do I am showing him it can be done in comfort for around $2,000.00 a month and even less if you want to eliminate some of what I pay for. I have a 45 ft DP and don't have anything inside my tires. I spent 30+ years in tire manufacturing and know tires. The odds of a blowout is less than 5% and a front tire blow out is around 2%. If you're diligent in inspecting them monthly and pull them off to do a complete inspection yearly and replace at 7-10 yr old, you drop that to less than .01%.

    GREAT VIDEO, we thoroughly enjoyed this video and it was the first one I had seen from someone RVing in the Tourist Mode like you mentioned, which is what most folks probably imaging when they are thinking of retirement and traveling in an RV. We would be honored to have you refer viewers to our slightly "out of control" travel style. You are ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON, when you say many people project and imagine they will always be in tourist mode once they go FT. Let me tell you, if we had to work full time yet during the week, there is NO WAY we would have the time and energy to be tourists. It is exhausting week after week,.....but someone has to carry the torch., so WE have volunteered! We are able to do this for a number of reasons. First is that we have zero debt. We sold our house, and banked the entire proceeds for our "Exit Plan". Doing this allowed us to be "all in" mentally, without worrying about the stick & brick taxes, up keep, shoveling, grass mowing, furnace failures, etc. while we are living in the RV. (The RV has tons of OTHER things I now have to worry about. ) Who needs that burden when your a 1000 miles away for the 5 years plus we may be on the road? We are blessed with EACH having a pension. So glad I was a union mechanical engineer and Sue was a union art teacher. I am on Social Security. I selected a young wife, (62) and have to pay the price of no social security check,.......yet. We saved at least 20% of our combined pay checks, and built up a great 401k, because we were told to by all the older smart people we knew! So glad we listened. If your young, DO WHAT IT TAKES TO GET A PLAN GOING! Seems like one day I was 29, and the next day I was 65! When I saw your latest episode where you call out "I'm Not Lost I'm RVing", I went and watched it and thought OMG this comparison they did was fantastic. Too bad they didn't know about us,....we could of been their poster child of the AARP Senior Citizen "Retired Tourist RV Lifestyle". This would be a great Facebook Group! Thank you for the offer of a shout out. Your featured video link already made a difference......

    Thank you both for “keepin’ it real“! You did a beautiful job with the entire budgeting process as well as the “reality check” it gave me and probably to others as well! As I watched your video I took into account that you both are dealing with a “monster bus“ and that your expenses would clearly be unique to those with Class A’s. You have not changed my mind about RVing, however my thoughts (at 67 years young 😀) are to be more of a destination RV’er with minimal travel as I have already seen the country as well as most of Europe. But the downside to “Destiination lifestyle“ is of course, not moving something that has an engine! 😱 And just like us humans if we don’t “move it“ we will “lose it”. 😂🤣 So, in re-evaluating my future, I truly should be considering a TT or a fifth wheel. Unfortunately, either of those choices elliminate my being able to enjoy an exclusive resort environment since most of those do require you to have a Class A in order to be a resident. Specifically the one in Naples Florida. You have not “dashed my dreams”, but you definitely have “tweaked my thoughts“! LOL!😂🤣 I have subscribed to your channel in full appreciation of all that you have shared in this one video! Whether or not I go back to sticks and bricks or downsize to a Tiny Home I will be forever grateful for your “Wake up call“ that may guide me onto the right path!! I wish you both safe travels & thanks again so very much!! 🥰🥰

    BTW- Like you, we hate maneuvering our big ol coach in small spaces so we always fill the diesel tanks in easy to access truck stops. We just got the TSD Logistics fuel card. We were full time for two years in a 38 foot Tiffin towing a car and we used Thousand Trails/Encore extensively staying over 500 nights with an average cost of $9 per night including the original purchase price of our resell Elite membership. For full timers TT is a no brainer. We spent two winters in Florida and used TT up to PA and over to IN and OH and down to TX. If we are ever able to travel again we will be reactivating our TT membership.

Wish someone would have told us to go to the FMCA RV Basics School BEFORE buying a rig, and starting out our Full Time Adventure. I haven't since I was a kid , but as a family we used to travel a lot in a 49 Ford panel truck pulling a medium trailer.. I'm 70 today, and can still remember pulling into a campground and hooking up the electric power and really enjoying it. The fresh water was nice to have too. Today, it's way more expensive than back then. We still managed to enjoy the lifestyle. I think the roughest was spending the winters in Baker , Montana. That was a brutal winter. 1958- through 1962. The mosquitos would eat you alive in summer. The 30-60below weather in winter. Still enjoyed it because the people there were exceptionally nice.

    Ciao Mark and Sue:
    Doing a little research, after GOD spared us from hurricane #DORIAN here in Ole' Plantation, FL, this past week and looking for options before we become climate change refugees. Our estate in our family's ancient mountain top village Sclafani Bagni, Sicilia (Palermo Providence) is refuge, albeit for Mount Etna which had been more grumpy then not of late.
    Anyway, that said sure you can appreciate our weather weariness and no real interest in Vulcanalia has us exploring alternatives. Our first RV choice in the NEWMAR brand. Been eying a neighbors NEWMAR, behind a fence (code) in their yard as a Granny Apartment for a couple of years, who just sold their home in 12 days, jumped in the RV and headed to TN before Dorian. BRAVO!
    Thinking similar set-up with a new machine which is pricy, but seeing you bought an older year and your maintenance costs do not seem exorbitant, we would consider buying used.
    Not sure of your rigs year or mileage when purchased, but recall you said you paid $230k on a some $400k new price, perhaps you could jot down a note as to this.
    We subscribed, so we'll get notices of any future going on's from you two and look forward to same.
    Good work and thanks a lot. Very informative.
    Sta bene'
    Conte*Marco Di Carlo Varca

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  5 років тому

      You can't go wrong with Newmar. Buy as new as you can, without actually buying new. In a Dutch Star, get 2016 or newer to get the larger front axle, with larger front tires, and the fire escape exit door. (Ours is 2014, and at $230K for the model 4369, it looks like we did OK on price.)

      Thank you Winston. I really am a lucky guy to have Sue in my life. If she wasn't on board with the Full Time RV Life, I would be home puttering around in my basement workshop. Frankly,.....that was getting old. She always puts a skip in my step!

    I love camping for weeks at a time. My aunt and uncle did the Camp Host thing, and for years they traveled the country. Since they both enjoyed that type of living it was fun. I enjoy taking my bumper pull to different private camp grounds, however my does not feel the same. So I will probably never experience what you all are experiencing. You two have fun and don't forget to put aside $10.00 for each of your children before you go back to Las Vagas.

      Glad it was helpful! The RV style (and the cost of the rig) you select is the biggest one time expense. The parks you decide to live in will be your second largest expense per month. (Private Campground or Thousand Trails Membership?) And finally, the costs to repair & maintain it will be your third biggest expensive per month. If your accurate with your figures up front, your RV life will be much less stressful for you and your partner!

  • @stu7348
    @stu7348 2 місяці тому

    Subtract these costs: no property taxes. No home upkeep. No water, sewer, garbage bills. No electric and natural gas bills. No home insurance. Etc. Etc. RVing is more expensive than home ownership, but there are more economical choices as well.
    Thanks for the information.

      We always tell folks to use our numbers as worst case scenario. We drive and OLDER luxury coach model, I DON"T do repairs or maintenance myself, we are TRAVELING not STATIONARY, don't use Thousand Trails, always have HOOKUPS and we are TOURISTS not campers. But for us, it has been an amazing adventure. Thanks for watching,......

    How refreshing it is to watch your video! Your honesty is like a breath of fresh air. The one point I want to make is to say that RV'ing in a 40-45' diesel pusher on a full time basis is not for the poor penny pincher. You do need to have deeper pockets than the average $10 an hour wage earner. Merely indicating you have no payments on your coach separates you from most folks. The idea is to get out and enjoy life. You were wise with your money throughout your life, and it's OK to now spend it and have fun. If a family is trying to live on Social Security and just a small pension, you have to downsize and live within your means.
    Bully for you that you can do what you are doing and enjoying yourselves. I applaud you.
    p.s. I see that you are not spending all your children's inheritance!

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the pat on the back! My parents were very frugal with the dollar, and compared to them I was a nutcase. But they did make me into a "saver" compared to most people. I am not saying it is wise to wait to travel like we are now. I actually tell folks I meet when out with their families that they are doing it right. My sons missed out on all the adventure Sue & I have now,.......... and I do have some guilt over that. I am working on getting rid of it. I have discovered that everytime I soak in a natural hot springs, a little bit more of that guilt melts away!

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  4 роки тому

      Equipment choice is the major decision that will predict many of the future costs across most categories. So will travel style vs. sitting in one spot style, and the frequency of travel and moving. RV loan vs no loan? Who is paying your healthcare, you or your previous employer or medicare? And the big one,………depreciation,……....can you afford to sell your RV when done for SUBSTANTIALLY less than you paid for it, or even worse,......getting nothing for it,…..when done with the adventure? With a little study and soul searching, one can get a "ballpark' of the costs to expect. Thanks for taking the time to watch our cost video segment.

    I really do appreciate all this information you have handed down to people looking to go full time like me and my family. About the true RV as a cost, when you're done, don't sell it, rent it out full time only to recoup costs. You can make good money.

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  Рік тому +1

      You are so welcome guys! We are already averaging a NEW, inflated, current, repair/maintenance budget of up to $1000/month year around to keep the rig running. Things are so complex and fragile on RV's, we would never rent it out. When we finally are ready to downsize, we will sell it and take our lumps! Merry Christmas!

    Hello there. I am a previous owner of Thousand Trails. Just something to consider when looking at Thousand Trails is the parks are no longer private, they are now open to the public. You're correct in the research of East Coast and West Coast , the exception is Texas, there are a number of campgrounds in that state. Good luck to you

    Good information - I've been looking for this. I took a 'snip' of your spreadsheet ($75,315 yr total) and will look at more carefully. I thought we'd look at doing this maybe 6 months out of the year. Not a Class A but perhaps a travel trailer or 5th wheel and we'd have our tow vehicle to run errands and sight see with. It does look like some of your expenses will occur regardless such as groceries, dental, cell phones, etc. My idea is to try and separate those things from the 'RV costs' such as campsite, fuel, RV depreciation (excellent point made here). Thanks for providing a good look at the financial side of RVing. Cheers!

      It is expensive, and that is the reason we published this. Didn't seem to be too many others warning that it will challenge the wallet of pensioners on social security & company pensions!
