Our little RV has had lots of work done to it in upgrades that make it fit our lifestyle as full time RVers. We've made individual videos for each of these upgrades that explain in depth what they are with step-by-step installation instructions and if you're interested in seeing those videos click this link here.
However, we've never made a video that shows all of our upgrades! So we thought it would be helpful to do a quick review of all our upgrades in case you missed one as well as telling how much they each cost, how long they took to install, and weather or not they were worth it.
Thousands of dollars have been spent improving our RV as well as hundreds of hours of hard work. But were these upgrades worth the investment of precious time and money?

For your door lock, install the inside plate with 3M double sided tape. It will stop the movement.

Here's an Onion trick I learned... To avoid your eyes getting all teared up, put a small cutting board into a sink full of water, and do the cutting under water! When you cut into an onion, it sprays stuff into the air. But if you do the cutting underwater, you're safe! Much like when you peel an orange, it sprays stuff from the peel into the air.

I know this video was a while ago, but I might have a solution to the keyless lock problem....as far as the movement goes, you could get sticky back rubber tape in about 1/16 or less thickness. Put it around the OUTSIDE plate...because if it's that loose it could be a potential leak...trim it then remount.
For the loose screw....use a wooden matchstick...they are soft wood & large enough to fit most screw holes...put some wood glue...yellow glue...on it & pound it into the hole. Let it dry then you could use an awl to start the hole or a small Vixbit, which is a self centering bit. Use a small one...about 5/16...there are several sizes & they come in very handy for a lot of applications. The screw should tighten up nicely now.
Hope this helps. I enjoy all your vids...love all your critters.

I am assuming the door is framed with wood....mine is...if not & it is just metal then you might be able to get a larger size screw...with the same diameter of head...you could probably find what you need at fasteners Inc. Or fastenall...or if you have to get one with a larger head, you could counter sink the hole larger to fit the new screw.

My cats love to swipe the MCD brand day/night shades with their paws. Even with their claws trimmed and dull they can still make enough noise to wake me up, there is a slight texture to the night shade and I'm sure it feels good on their little paws.

Take a counter sink to the latch plate.
For the lock shifting ....Trace the lock( w/ pencil)on where you'd like it to sit the trailer. Take it off and run some silicone caulk under where you'd like it to be on the door. Place back over silicone tighten and hold in place until dry with painter's tape guaranteed never to shift again

Perhaps LED lights are standard now. But, they save a BUNCH on power drain when boondocking. A switch to isolate the coach battery at night from the tow vehicle battery has saved us from many dead truck batteries the next morning. Learning how to repair/replace your RV equipment is a must when boondocking and when avoiding the hassle of waiting for and paying professional installers. Thanks to UA-cam, learning how to accomplish these tasks has become a lot easier.

With the door lock on the outside. Have you tried all weather industrial glue on both the inside and outside parts? Screws are good, but glue in an area along with screws can work great. Talking about the screws, go match them up and get the ones that don't rust from Menards or Home Depot. To help with the water, because if you have the rust, there is a water issue, simply use all weather caulking. Use it on the outside part of the door handle. After you have glued it to the door. If glue doesn't work because you may have to remove it to change the batteries or it breaks, try marine grade foam sheets. It will keep water out while helping keep it from moving around as well.

Not sure if you have found the solution for the RVLock yet but it is pretty easy. The problem is your door is slightly too thin for the supplied screws/bolts. Get a couple of nuts from hardware store and thread them onto the screw/bolt then cut off or use a grinder to take off just 1/16 inch and then when you screw off the bolt it will fix the thread. Try tightening them back together and see if it clamps it tighter. If still a little lose then repeat just taking off tiny bits. That is for the 4 screws on the inside. For the striker plate go to Lowes or HD and find matching screws in stainless steel to replace.

Please forgive if already commented, but for the lock issues:
1). Use “Loctite” threadlocker to keep the screws from rattling loose. Just don’t use the maximum strength “red” version, which is more permanent.
2). Replace the zinc screws with stainless steel screws, which aren’t nearly prone to rust as much. I hope this helps! (if not already solved).

    • @adamd414
      @adamd414 2 роки тому

I would argue to say Loctite 242, blue medium strength is more than adequate and you won't have to destroy fasteners to remove them again. Red loctite often require heating the fasteners to remove them in the future, which would destroy things on the RV itself. For reference, loctite 242 is used to hold gun sights on. There's significant impulse to the recoil of a pistol, and the sight posts stay on tight. It should be adequate for an RV.

For the door lock, take it back apart and put in spacers to fill any gaps, that will make it solid, reassemble with blue loctite on the screws, and put some silicone behind both pieces, to seal it up and help hold it in place.

This video is 2 years old at this point, so I would assume they fixed their issue with the lock, but for those who have a similar problem, the screw that doesn't seat all the way is the issue. Either there's damaged threads or the screw shank is too long. Tap the threads first, and verify if the screw is too long. Either way, replace the screw with a good quality stainless steel with the same thread pitch and correct length. Putting some loctite thread locker wouldn't hurt either to keep the screws seated. Blue 242 would work well for that. Do not use red, you'll never get them out again. Sealant behind the key panel and deadbolt striker plate also wouldn't be a bad idea, just use a sparing amount to make a faying seal

A pop rivet should be enough to anchor the door lock. However, that it's rusting already? Probably means it's temporary.
Also, unless I'm mistaken the quickest way into that door would be a pry bar. I'd do something else, and I'd position a couple of cameras. Whether or not they're hooked up to anything is secondary. I like non-standard DIY security solutions. No bad person is going to recognize the manufacturer and know how to defeat it. I'd also want a hasp and padlock option for that door. I've only been ripped off once while camping. It's unsettling. You can get a removable hasp so most of the time there's just two pieces, nothing loose. If you get a twinge, you insert the hasp, clamp down the padlock. Pay attention to those twinges.
The LockPickingLawyer UA-cam channel is great for finding out how secure different types of locks are. You'll learn which locks are a complete joke, which ones are okay. When he picks all of them, you'll realize how dumb criminals are.

From the lithium batteries to the screws that help down the panels. I gave the total and all the receipts to my CPA and was able to get 1500 dollars back. I received a 30% tax break on my 2018 tax year. 2020 its 26% and 2021 will lower to 20%. Form 5695

I know im late to the party.... Sorry.... but if you are still having the issue Ref: the rv lock.... "guinea pig" as a test. take out one of the screws that holds the lock in place. Try grinding the tip of the bolt back by... say... 1/8" but no more... you will probably have to taper the very end of the threads after you've trimmed to length, just a bit to clean the starting threads up. if you feel like the one bolt has achieved you purpose, repeat the process. This process is based on the premise the bolts have bottomed out.

Regarding the smell from the toilet, that is probably due to the urine fumes going back up the funnel. A simple solution would be to take out the urine container, install a line directly to the grey tank while installing a shut-off valve on the line so that no smell is coming back up. Opening the line would be just a quick turn of the valve, rinse after use and close the valve after.

You will will have to drill a hole from the striker plate back to where you can put a nut on the machine screw. Drill a hole threw the side to where it intersects the machine screw and install with Locktite. You will be very happy

There are 3 things you can do to fix your RV lock:
    1. Remove, sand and paint the "striker plate" with gloss paint or automotive wheel clearcoat.
    2. Cut the offending screw down that does not screw in tight enough, a small amount, then chase the threads for easy installation
    3. Put Bostik industrial adhesive sealant underneath the lock faceplates (the inside and outside parts which have the buttons on it outside and handles on it inside), just a dab in a few places will do ya. You must let this dry under no load for at least 24 hours on high vibration joints. You are effectivly glueing the lock assembly to the door. Make sure to align it correctly and keep it aligned while the adhesive sets
    4. (BONUS) use blue thread locker on all fasteners on re-assembly

Because so many people in this world are jealous of anyone who is generally happy with their life and instead of trying to take a lesson they want to tear them down and rain on their parade in any way they can. They are usually born losers that are too afraid to improve their station in life because they don't think they have what it takes so they want to bring others down to the level they are on. A level where shame, failure, negativity, hatred, atheism and depression rules and ambition, motivation, positivity, spirituality, hope and accomplishment have no place. NEVER ever let anyone else tell you what you can't do, what you won't do, what you're not allowed to do, or judge your work, your lifestyle, your choices, or your beliefs in any way. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY, family, friends, bosses, no human is qualified or has the right to judge you or discourage you. Do what you feel is RIGHT in your heart and always listen to that little voice inside we all have. It always speaks the truth, 100% of the time. The problem is most people have such loud external influences that drown out the sound of that voice and that is where unhappiness and bad decisions creep in, it's where the cycle of what we call "bad luck" starts, but there's no such thing. There are only decisions, and the wrong people can influence those decisions, such as a thumbs down on a great video you made. What if a few thumbs down and a few rude comments were the first ratings they received on this video? If they were easily influenced by that they may have taken it down, thinking it was no good, ashamed and embarrassed. Think if that happened the thousands of people that wouldn't get the benefit of watching this video full of useful information. There may have been thousands of mistakes by would be RV owners because they missed this video, and thousands of frustrating situations, and a lot of despair and negative energy sent back into this world. All because some losers decided they would try to bring these people down for no reason. That action may have affected thousands of people lives. And this is just one example on one little video on one website. Think of all the people in the world, all the people in history who have been discouraged by the naysayers, the judges, the losers who just wanted to bring them down and keep them from pursuing good ideas or spreading of useful information, providing help to others, even changing the world for the better. Haters are the greatest DANGER in existence. DEFEAT HATERS!.NEVER BE JUDGED! DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR HEAD HELD HIGH, ALWAYS! BE PROUD OF WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE. SEND THEM PACKING!

    Hi
One tube of locktight costs about $5.00 at any automotive store. One or two drops will keep the screws from backing out. And if you use a flat piece of thin rubber inside you it should stop the movement of the lock. It may take a little silicone also. front and back of the rubber.
Nice video, thanks for all the tips.

i would say for the front door you need to either shim the strike plate and the housing. The screws look too long basicly.
So either go find shorter screws, which you might need for the strike plate. Or shim it so it just compresses better.
if the issue is the screws are backing out i would say use a thread locker.
    Weather proofing? Clear coat maybe?

On the door lock, if you take some 2 sided tape or even some thin rubber and put behind both sides before tightening it back down it should stay in place better. The screws that keep coming out I would get some stainless or coated screws from the hardware store and use some blue or low strength loctite on them and they should stop backing out.

For the loose door latch screw take the screw out take a toothpick break it off. Put the screw back in and try that with blue Loctite on all the screws so they don't wiggle loose overtime. If the toothpick doesn't work go with a thicker diameter screw find out what size it is at Lowe's or Home Depot and go with a larger-diameter non rusting stainless steel screen. You mentioned the lock was rusting I think the lock is made out of aluminum I do believe. But I have been getting some stainless steel screws at Lowe's or Home Depot that are rusting. That shouldn't happen but obviously there a Chinese knockoff. You could add a few drops of silicon on the back of the RV door latch if it keeps coming loose.

Putting a one-way valve on the hot water line to keep that from mixing is a brilliant idea!!!
It would also help behind the shower that's outside because I've heard of people using that at a dump station and forgetting to turn both valves off (only turning off the shower head) and not realizing for quite some time why they were only getting lukewarm water from their water system!!!!!

Lock has top screw stripped it looks like. U could use wood glue and drive tooth picks into the screw hole with the glue on them, let them dry, cut them flush and then reinstall the lock and the screw should be able to catch and tighten like its supposed to.

Add a bit of borax to some water in the composting toilet you may be able to get rid of that odor . The odor is caused by a build-up of inert gasses. And the borax will introduce oxygen and allow it to be more active and less smelly.

Okay, I had a 36-foot allegro bay class A motorhome (used) I did some creative rework also. So the front door lock assembly; what I did on mine to keep it from shifting was to use this double-sided sealant tape which adhered to the door and the lock and kept it from shifting up and down and the screws actually tighten up. Now for the screw on the plate. I took a slice of the sealant tape and rolled it so it looked like a joint and stuffed it into the screw hole and that gave the screw something to grab and smoosh into the wall of the hole and get tight. Then I used some of my wife's clear nail polish and put a coat over the surface of the plate and that worked for about 3 years. Also, I used a q tip and some silicone oil to coat the tongue of the lock and I would do that once a year. One other thing I did hear the galley was I installed a one-way vent in the roof. This lets moist air out but stops air coming in and that cut the condensation down by about 50%.

Hey guys a suggestion on the door lock. 1st if you can get stainless screws. 2nd shorten the screws by a few threads, they might be a little too long not pulling it tight. 3rd use lock tight on the threads, that should keep the screws from backing out. Nuff said, GR8 video, and GR8 useful ideas. .... JeffG

Great video! We have trouble with our RV LOCK as well. The covering over number 7 on the keypad seems to have delaminated, so when we pressed the 7 it does not always make contact. Now I have to change our code so we don't use the seven anymore. We are not full timers and have used our RV probably twice since we installed the lock last year, so it's not like we overuse the touchpad. While we love the lock concept, we feel the poor quality of lock does not justify the price paid.

I hope y'all have the electronic lock figured out by now! Both our vehicles have the keyless entry systems, we added one to the house as well. The whole idea for me is to have to pack fewer keys ito my pocket! I prefer to have NO keychain with me. Each vehiclke has that ginormous Ford keyfob. One key fits the entire house - 3 external doors and two interior garage doors. That system would be a big plus in my book!

Solar's getting much cheaper, with much better batteries (and even Li is looking to get replaced). I know you want to do it yourself (I'm an old construction worker) but as to the locks (especially on the battery compartment and entrance door) you might want to get a locksmith (their price isn't that high compared to the potential loss) and it would be that much more secure. You did a great job, good camping, and Dominus vobiscum.

Probably could get some hy200 epoxy and put on the inside backplate of the lock . That epoxy is no joke . Just take it off , apply a generous bead on the interior lock backplate , quickly reinstall it real quick . The gun to use will probably cost more than the epoxy . But if you know anyone in construction they may already have it all that you could borrow from them .

the push button/keyless entry door lock.... take the screws out of it and remove it, then take each half (inside and outside), and fit them individually to see where the slack is, and then shim it.. epoxy a shim in place in the cutout so the mechanism fits snug in the hole, and then reinstall it all....
....as for the screw coming loose, use a drop of BLUE loctite on the screw threads... do NOT use RED loctite or you will never be able to remove the screw without destroying the mechanism and possibly the door.. if the screw threads are stripped out, use a larger screw or use epoxy paste to fill the hole, and after it cures for a couple days, redrill the hole to accept the screw. DONT epoxy the screw in the hole.
most holes/cutouts in RV's are not precise at all, and if the one who cuts the hole at the manufacture gets outside the marks too far, they generally try to hide it, which leaves you with a sloppy install, possibly shimmed with a loose piece of wood that will shift or fall out over time.....
for holding the shim in place, and preventing the screw from backing out, silicone sealer may be an option also. its not as permanent so it can be removed, and easier to work with, but the ONLY down side is its not as permanent..
