Lyrics
Now let's get right on down to the skit
A baby is brought into a world of pits
And if it could've talked that soon
In the delivery room
It would've asked the nurse for a hit
The reason for this?
The mother is a jerk
Excuse me, junkie
Which brought the work of the old
Into a new life
What a way
But this what a way
Has been a way of today
Anyway
Push couldn't shove me to understand a path to a basehead
Consumer should erase it in the first wave
Cause second wave forms believers
And believers will walk to it then even talk to it and say...
(You got the body now you want my soul)
Nah, can't have none of that, tell 'em what to say Mase...
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
Nah, no my brother
No my sister
Try to get hip to this
Word, word to the mother
I'll tell the truth so bear my witness
Fly like birds of a feather
Drugs are like pleather
You don't wanna wear it
No need to ask that question, just don't mention
You know what the answer is...
Now I never fancied Nancy
But the statement she made held a plate of weight
I even stressed it to Wade
Did he take any heed?
Nah, the boy was hooked, you could've phrased the word "Base"
And the kid just shook
In his fashion class once an A now an F
The rock rules him now
The only designs left
Were once clothes made for Oshkosh
Has converted to nothing but stonewash
Now hopping in a barrel is a barrel of fun
But don't hop in if you want to be down, son
Cause that could mean down and out as an action
What does it lead to?
Dum-da-dum-dum
People say what have I done for all my years
My tears show my hard-earned work
I heard shoving is worse than pushing
But I'd rather know a shover than a pusher
Cause a pusher's a jerk
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
Believe it or not the plot forms a fee more that charity
But the course doesn't coincide with the ride of insanity
Is it a chant that slants the soul to fill for it?
I know it's the border that flaunts the order to kill for it
Standing, scheming on a young one
Taking his time, eight-ball for a cool pool player
Racked it all, tried to break, miscued
Got beat by the boy in blue
Next day you're out by the spot once more
Looking hard for a crack in the hole
I ask what's the fix for the ill stuff
Word to the Dero
The answer should have been no
Run me a score from the Funky Four Plus One More
(It's the joint)
Rewind that back
This is the age for a new stage of fiend
Watch how the zombies scream
It's the crack
Plain is plain it should explain it from the start
Behind the ideals of cranking up the heart
Now the base claims shop over every park
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Don’t Even Think About it)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)
(Say No Go)

The moment this dropped in the film "Civil War" was epic. 🔥🔥
I know! I swear that was the first time since '90-'91 that I'd heard it 😆
Definitely a 'before' and 'after' perspective on this song after being steamrolled by that film
When this dropped in the civil war movie I was instantly teleported back to a fun time in my life
id argue it was a (intentionally) disorienting moment
I thought it was brilliantly done how this harsh contrast between the everyday life of a war photographer and what is actually happening there, as if it was just business as usual. Fantastic camera settings as well
Civil War brought me here. Holy shit -- a sequence for the ages. A film for the ages.
Same here mate. How poignant was that scene when accompanied with this song!
A great movie and some special scenes. I actually watched it twice. Lol
Hearing it in IMAX was heavenly
SAME
The film had a great concept and definitely some incredible scenes but honestly feel it fell short and missed a big opportunity with the storyline and characters. The scene with this track was dope though
@@onelson101 ...Kirsten Dunst was good. I never rated her before but she played it unsentimental.
I'll never hear this song the same way again. Blimey the irony of CIVIL WAR showing a man shooting hooded men to this hip-hop classic now carries a new meaning.
2024 and still sounds like it was just released yesterday. Love De La Soul.
So good to see so many people introduced to this classic via Civil War. Enjoy!
Totally fit the scene in "Civil War" where this kicked in!
Shut up u bandwagon
Been playing this for weeks since Civil War .. brilliant!
It's my go-to song for driving to and from work. I'm blasting it loudly for everyone in my little town to hear.
But yeah, Civil War is wholly responsible here.
Like many others, the spectacular drop of this song in Civil War is why I flashed back to this epic jam. The sound mixers in the movie did an amazing job of making it pulse. It was a fascinating collision of sight and sound.
Recognized their voice the moment this started playing in civil war, awesome.
Hadn’t heard this in years, saw Civil War tonight & still love this track but will never hear it the same way
That's exactly what I tweeted to De La as well. Never will I hear this joint the same way ever again.
The memory of those gunshots
Same here, had forgotten the song was 35(!) years old.
Plug 2 is immortalized in the music. Keep listening.
Loved the moment this song was on 'Civil War'.
That Hall & Oates sample ❤
I love interesting samples like this-- do something interesting with it, and here totally changed the meaning of a very minimal phrase. Just playing a disco or funk song owned by your label so available and rapping over it is not artistry. (RIP my responses.) GET OFF OF MY LAWN
The sample was replayed apparently cause they couldn't get it cleared. I can't hear it tho. I can only hear the it's the joint sample was redone
@@statenhal damn. Well at least we got Paul's Boutique before the 2Live Crew lawsuit. Honestly with over 300 samples that I'm still trying to figure out without cheating, I don't know if that wasn't the peak sampling. That almost certainly never happen again until all those IP rights expire, long after we are gone-- so glad we were there for the D.A.I.S.Y. age, so close to being grey area legal. We were so fortunate. RIP Dave, RIP MCA, f*** the labels and agents
@@JenSell1626 its funny how they made
"the melted version" out of cool breeze on the rocks. Just a big blob of crunched samples. There was no way, and also no point, in trying to get that samplefest cleared.
Oh really..
3 is *STILL* the magic number.
Respect to all true heads who've been down with Native Tongues since '89!
#RIPDave #Plug2 #TrugoyTheDove 🕊️
Absolutely! And 3 is the magic number was a Sesame Street song ❤
R.I.P PLUG 2 🗿🙏
:(💔🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤
Yeah bless
Amen 🙏
Civil War movie 🍿 and I was dancing in my seat!!
We will be dancing when the Boog breaks out for sure
After all these years......the day is here! Back to 89 we go
🙌🏾'89Flava4Ever!!!🩷#DeLAClassic🌻
Loved 89
This dropped in Civil War and I was immediately taken back to Summer 89! Wore the cassette out!
At the end the day ...Say no to drugs!!! DE LA was ILL!!!!! Youngsters today wouldn't make a message like this in today's songs.. thank GOD for De LA SOUL!!!
THANK GOD FOR DE LA SOUL!!!
R.I.P. DAVE!
When Hip Hop had imagination. The Art of the Sample.
🙌🏾🩷💐🩷🙌🏾#word!
Well said, I never heard of a rap sample explained this way. Peace.
Spot on mate 😊
Happy 34th anniversary to De LA Soul's debut album 3 Feet High and Rising
1989 was _everything..._ that's the year that I fell I love with HipHop, at age 7! Public Enemy, NWA, De La Soul... '89 was my gateway to the history of music. 😍🥰
I feel old
@@Jimmy1982Playlists exactly!!
It’s called the Golden Age of Hip Hop for a reason.
some dude on the radio was saying hbd to hip hop 50th anniversary. I shrugged at that but he wrote a whole book about jdilla then i shrugged again (*bc the interview started w de la sampling license issues i wanted to hear about de la, but he was promoting his book) i'm just so happy (it seems) de la got their rights back. How can you keep de la in a box?
This track in Alex Garland's Civil War went HARD
Hip hop videos from the late 80s and early 90s are pure gold
Million times harder than today's shit. Thanks Dave and all
DIDNT EVEN KNOW THIS TRACK HAD A VIDEO BEFORE NOW OMGGGGGG THIS DAY IS HISTORIC LONG LIVE THE SOUL DE LA THAT IS
How so? This was an MTV fixture during that time.
@@mistamycall - It's possible. I remember back then I had cable then during a certain point, it was cut off. I didn't know this video was out as well. My only access to videos was a friend who recorded them on VHS but they only recorded videos they liked and not the whole mTV Raps segment.
This my first time seeing this video.
That's fine if people have never seen this video. I KNOW these brothers WILL gain a new drove of followers.
De La Soul is the BEST!!!!!
How highly acclaimed were De La Soul in their time?
To me they are genius.
Highly rated high and respected, yet still underrated because of the record label.
Huge.. Prince Paul, the producer made a ton of hits.
De La summarizes their style and acclaim best with "Me, Myself and I".
They were considered as innovators and creative powerhouses
Depends on who you ask probably. Surely some would say "One hit wonder" because 'Me Myself And I' was their only real smash hit. But if by chance you heard other songs on the album .... I would say there'd have to be something really wrong with you if you didn't instantly fall in love. That was the experience of me and all my friends, and we were a bunch of mostly white punk, skater, New Wave, drag queen, Goth, etc., kids, misfits of all sorts. Everywhere I went this album was playing, and then played again.
At the time I thought it was just how hard the beats hit and the incredible sample usage. But now that I'm 50, I realize it was more than that. -These guys were kinda misfits in their own scene. They were a bit too political (dare I say 'nerdy') to fit with the carefree mainstream bubble gum hip hop of the 80's, but too carefree to fit with the hard knocks horror gangster rap of the 90's. But at the same time, there was something universal about them, the way they encapsulated what it felt like to be "that age", with one foot still in childhood and one in adulthood, still very silly much of the time, but starting to see things for what they are, all while experiencing sexual tension, ha. And not just being a young adult but within a little subculture of friends who have your own dialect of talking and stuff. Like fitting in with each other while not fitting in with the rest of the world? I don't know I think I'm failing here, ha. But maybe you get what I'm saying.
My favorite De La Soul song ever! Miss you Dave. Plug 2 forever. ❤
Bloody LOVE this, my intro to De La Soul! 😍 Sad Dave didn't get to see this glorious day. It's a full on #deladay 💗
DeLaDay, FOR SURE!
...And all weekend!!!
Love this bless him❤❤❤
De La Soul deserved a much wider appreciation. Unfortunately gangsta rap ended up largely overshadowing the more groovy bars of soul-y r'n'b hip-hop.
The Sgt. Pepper of Hip Hop.
A wonderful work of art this album is.
The soundtracks of Alex Garland films are always on point
Geoff Barrow (Portishead) may be an useful help in Garland's works. ;)
Forever.✌🏻🎱✌🏻
My Favorite De La Soul song and My rap song of the year 1989. R.I.P Dove 😢
They shot this video in Coney Island. Yes, I was there. Been down with De La Soul since day zero.
Me as well; wore out my cassette. Grew up nearby; Sheepshead Bay ❤
Cool😊
WHAT DOES IT LEAD 2....dum da dum dum...❤😊YNWA
Love the way the guy who gets the food recites the Hall & Oates bit.
Long Live Plug 2🕊🕊💔
I love listening to this after I finish a hard day at work 😂
having a old skool night, this song is simply brilliant
Eternal love and respect!
The best anti-drug song in history!
This album saved my life when I was a teen.
100% awesomeness, song and video... now get to stream, yay congrats guys! RIP Plug2
Classic 🔥
It's hard to express just how much I love this song. RIP Plug 2, underrated as hell.
Never Underrated
Was and still is Flavor
Let’s go! We’ve been waiting too damn long for this! Sad that Dave won’t be able to celebrate this.
He's there in spirit.
A modern American civil war is going to have a hip-hop soundtrack; that's just our age. It's gonna be more memorable if it is old-school hip-hop like this banger of a ride from De La Soul. Epic.
Gracias por todo De La Soul, son lejos uno de los grupos más importantes para muchos, fui feliz y llore como niño cuando los vi en Chile
This is real rap kids! JUNE 2024.
Glad that De La finally get the royalties they truly deserve but sad that Dave aka Trugoy The Dove is not here with us to get his flowers for his part of these awesome catalogs. Fly on Dave...."Thank you for your work to become the icon you are now". Salute! Sleep easy legend.🙏🏾🕊🕯🌹🌻🌻👑🎤
Haven’t heard this in so long and now it’s on repeat in my head. So many great samples in the mix.
Could you name the samples please?
I only know the Hall & Oates.
I would love to research the samples.
That funky little guitar riff that comes in at :15 for instance
3/3/23 De La Freedom Day!!!🌼☮️🕊️
Favorite food: Plug 1 - Twizzlers, Plug 2 - Yogurt, and Plug 3 - Ketchup.
Only true De La fans know…lol
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Let’s gooooo!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Rest Well Dave..🕊🕊
Bro when this came on the movie civil war I was jamming I knew right away DE LA SOUL 😂😂
Yeah, finally more culture on the platform!
#RIPTrugoytheDove 🕊️
I f*ck**g love this song! Was pleasantly surprised when it played in Civil War.
Still have my " 3 feets high and rising" album at home, on my ears and my soul. All my respect for this band. Send you a big "merci les gars" from France
never sell it man...I'm gutted I got rid of mine😔
Still listing to this in 2023🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song was released in 1989 when I was 13 now that I looked it up. 35 years, how did I miss this funk! At least 1 good thing came out of this Civil War.
Cause your Lame
Still so fresh
TUNE!!!!!
Remember seeing this as my introduction to De La.. blew my mind....🙏🏾... this was the days of vhs tapes and i left it on record so i caught the song mid video, needless to say i had to find out who these fresh and original dudes were.....peace to Trugoy 🕊🙏🏾🌍
this scene was brutal, the song made it more chaotic.
Civil war movie brought me here. Amazing song ❤
Grandi e Fantastici. Riposa in pace Dave ❤️♥️❤️
Heard thsi for the first time today, i went to see civil war and heard this song and was like oh my god what is this banger!!! I can't believe I've not heard it before. 🙌🔥
❤❤❤
🕊️🕊️🕊️☮️🙏🏾Dave
How many people felt slightly guilty tapping their foot to this during a gruesome scene in Civil War😅
Man lol I was USMC Force recon… I felt kinda bad but I was in the theater jamming lol it was like the Chappell show barber shop scene when quest love started kickin it hahahha😂
Guilty as charged
Not this guy...
I was dancing. Not guilty tho
What a movie
Bro I was going crazy for the release it's a de la celebration
Let’s get it started!
FUUUUCK IM 56 NOW 2023 😂❤ STILL LOVE THIS ❤
🎧❤️🎧❤️
I love this beat and the scratches. I used to do the scratches on my air turtables
Classic cut
"i cant go for that". love it!
RIP Plug Two
I loved how they used it in Civil War because, as a jaunty little sample-delic hip hop piece from the goofy 80's, it felt a rather perverse choice for the scene. And not even background music but FOREGROUND, completely drowning out gunshots and screaming. But remember the journalist Joel said he had a hard-on for checking out this battle, how perverse is that? The battle lust thing has been depicted in at least a couple other movies I can think of, Cold Mountain and Jarhead. I can understand the anxiety and boredom of just waiting for something to happen, but the jubilation at the chance to kill or be killed never ceases to horrify me. And I guess that's the point; war F's up people's minds!
This isn't even one of the best songs from 3 Feet High in my opinion but it's still pretty good; that's how much I love that album (one of my top 5 fav's of all time, and I'm not even into hip hop much really).
Amazing song
Love the Hall and Oates sample so freakin good.
yeeeee
Classic hip hop. This is what is missing from hip hop these days. There is a ton of great underground hip hop like Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Brother Ali, stuff like that.
He is amazing and so cool 😎
Better late then never on YT. I am DeLaSoul fan since '89, never saw this video :-) Rhimes, Beats and Flow on this track are 100% spot on.
This video deserves >> 10 million views!!
So great!
best anti crack/base/rocks tune
RIP Plug 2. You were awesome!!
fire 🔥 🔥

Ive listened to 20 true life stories (songs) thid morning already, and this is ranking high, about. A yard high, and it keeps on growing. 😅
Can I get a little Baby Phat on that?
🗣 say no go

The all-time classic 3 Feet High and Rising is finally in my Apple Music library. Life is good.
Blessings de la soul
love this track, never knew the name
