It was on the 2nd of February 1942 the Zippo Manufacturing Company changed over from brass cases to steel cases the new material was delivered by The Backus Novelty Company of Smethport

That’s some great information, I knew it was shortly after Pearl Harbor.
As historic Zippo is, it can be hard to find specific information like that. I need to remember to reach out to you regarding some of this stuff 😂😂😂

I never remember the pre 58 dates and stamps, so I keep screenshots of references. A magnifying glass, magnet, and a tiny nail that fits through the chimney holes, are in my edc load out when I go pickin for flame makers.
Great video JRO thanks for all the tips! I always have to reference others cause I never remember correctly 🤣✌.

      Thanks Dave!
Once I started handling more of the patient Zippos, it became easier to remember. I use this broad mental reference narrow it down within a year or two when I’m in the wild.
      1933-1935 outside hinge
      1935-1939 4 barrel squared
WW2 steal rounded case/ black crackle
      1946-1949- 203 pat. 3 barrel chrome/ nickel silver
      1950-1952 203 pat. 5 barrel chrome
      1952-1953 203 pat steel
      1953-1954 295 pat. Steel
      1955-1959 date dots start.
I may be off but that gives me a general idea. Any additional narrowing down when I look using the flint wheel, chimney, barrel size I’ll wait til I get to house.

Very good video! I didn't know that they ever made aluminum Zippos. I'd love to learn more about those.

Yeah, I’m not to familiar aluminum, but have heard of them being a prototype run. They also have those anodized aluminum plated designs too.

Can't believe I hadn't seen this one yet lol. Great video. Totally agree about the little date card for 50s and earlier Zippos. My steelies are some of my favorites in my collection. All mine so far are Korean war era. Still need a WWII one. Great video.✌🔥🔥

Thanks! That was an early video lol.
Steelies have a unique feel and sound about them.
I’m still waiting on my WW2 Zippo to fall in my lap. 😁😁😁

Yeah the WWII Zippos are getting hard to find at a good price. I'll probably find a 1950 and a 1952 to finish off my 50s collection long before getting a WWII lol.

Thanks for this. It looks like I have a 1951-53 steel case in my collection. It has been painted black at some point, and has likely had a hinge replacement in its history.

      Awesome thanks for watching!
Are you sure it isn’t a Ww2 black crackle?

I'm looking forward to adding a steel to my collection someday. I have always wondered how they feel compared to a standard brass.

I wish I had a scale to see if there was weight difference, I don’t think there is much difference. If you think about it only noticeable difference as touch I could think of is steel is a bit colder to the touch.

Just learned my grandpas lighter is steel and might even have been his fathers as we all have J names. Wish I didn’t throw away the insert I know foolish I only meant to put a new one in. But I still treasure it and can use it more easily with a butane insert anyway, that way I can carry it (I don’t smoke)

That’s awesome, it’s amazing to know that something your grandfather used still works today! (Minus the original insert)
That’s ok though! Hold onto that piece of history. A Zippo I’ll always cherish is my grandfathers Zippo.

brass should not attract magnet right? I just buy an insert that say it was brass but its attrack magnet. Is it the insert is metal plated with brass or I've been scammed? 😅 mine are manufactured on 2019

      Hey Bob!
All inserts are steel, might be brass plated but it’s steel.

@JRO_LIGHTS Thank you. I just learn that zippo didnt use solid brass due to soft and weak type of metal. Probably It will ruined the shape of the top insert when we pull it. So thats why they only plated it with brass 😊
