Persona 3s Bad Ending is Darker than you Thought

- Ive noticed that alot of people dont actually realize how dark the Bad Ending from Persona 3 actually is, so with the release of Reload i decided to just explain what actually happens aswell as what our favorite Toaster might experience.

I think you summarized everything on how I feel about this ending, plus clarified on some information. This ending, the cutscene with the trio at the karaoke room had left me thinking about it for an entire day. There were many things that disturbed me while seeing this ending.
Firstly, choosing to kill Ryoji means that you're betraying not only everyone, but yourself. Ryoji states that killing him would delay The Fall and remove The Dark Hour and any memories of it. SEES' main goal was to remove The Dark Hour and protect people from becoming preyed upon by shadows. The group had agreed to fight Nyx no matter what, even if it was a suicide mission. By choosing this option, Makoto is flushing all of the progress down the drain over a selfish choice of choosing to kill Ryoji and avoid experiencing The Fall. The friends he made and bonded with are gone too, and the adventures they've gone through were all for nothing in the end. The goal they intended to reach for had never been accomplished in the end, because *everyone would die no matter what.* Aigis would be the only "person" to remember the choice Makoto made. Aigis' purpose was to eliminate Shadows, and that was thrown away. She became human-like because of Makoto, and now he had forgotten about her. As you mentioned, Aigis will witness everyone becoming clueless and ignorant, not even remembering who she was.
Additionally, Yukari had joined SEES to find out the reason to her fathers death. Fuuka wanted to protect others. Akihiko felt weak after not being able to save his sister. Mitsuru wanted to carry her father's will. Amada wanted to avenge his mother. All these goals and motives the characters had are thrown away. Makoto had no one to care for or look after, and this was his opportunity. There's much more character development in the story, but that would take me forever to remember.
Secondly, probably the most disturbing thought I have was that everyone, including Makoto himself, would turn into black goo during The Fall which pains me to envision it. Aigis would witness everyone on the streets succumbing to Nyx and would be the only animate thing roaming the lifeless world of Earth till she rusts and corrodes. And if you think about it, The Phantom Thieves and The Investigation Team wouldn't have formed at all (The Phantom Thieves were in *elementary* to make matters worse). This decision Makoto made had humanity and life on the line. Even if they don't remember the events of The Fall, they were in it.
It saddens me to see Yukari, Junpei, and Makoto completely ignoring each other in that karaoke scene. The music really amplifies the emotion, as well as the scene turning gray and fading out. Yukari is singing alone, Junpei is busy calling someone else, and Makoto is either writing or drawing. They all were ignoring everyone else in the room, which made me think the Apathy Syndrome had shown its effects. Makoto, sitting while drawing, has no idea that he sold humanity over an event he doesn't want to experience. The Makoto you saw in that scene was the same Makoto at the very beginning of the game. Makoto lived ten years without parents, no one to look after him and no one he could talk to. Then, as he went to Port Island, he was given this opportunity: to care for people and to live a life for once. He made friends along the way during the year, bonding with them, helping, and enjoying their time with them. He betrayed everyone as soon as he chose the option to forget about everything. He betrayed himself, because he was given a life that he had not been given for the past ten years and he had let it go. As we are players seeing this from a third-person perspective, we KNOW what was going to happen. You too would feel betrayed if someone had made this decision after all of the things you've went through.
Now we all know this isn't the canon ending (thank god), but I guess the moral of this little Ted-Talk comment I have is to really think about others before making a sacrifice. I myself haven't played _Persona 3 Reload_ since it's like $70 (go ahead, call me poor if you want), but if I did buy it, I'd tremble going for this ending. I'd say this game's good and bad ending is one of the most heartbreaking ones. In my opinion, it's the same sorrow level as the ending of _Red Dead Redemption 2_ (do play that game, it's also a good story). Any fellow commentor whose been reading my looooong essay here, I appreciate it for taking your time.

Guys , Makoto Yuki from Persona 3 Reload is in danger and The Fall is going to wipe out all humanity ! To fight against Nyx, he's gonna need some Soma and dlc personas! All he needs is your credit card number, the three wacky digits in the back , and the expiration date . But you gotta be quick , so Makoto Yuki can defeat the shadows and ascend to the top of Tartarus before the time limit hits !

The real darkness is that everyone already resolved to fight to the bitter end. So choosing to erase everyone's memories of that is a huge back-stab and betrayal of everything you stood for throughout the game.

Your bad ending explanation perfectly descibes my feeling of existential horror about it. Imagine Aigis with her memory intact and so depressed but can't take her own life.
It never occurred to me that Aigis would be unaffected by the fall, I never really took that in when I played the game originally, and now thinking about where she would be after the fall is super terrifying, I do wonder though if she could by chance run into Labyris or Metis by the same logic

At the end of Answer it's revealed that Metis is just the human side of Aigis that manifested because of Aigis wish to return to being a machine
Metis doesn't exist in that timeline, because Metis is actually a shadow/daemon/manifested thought, the manifestation of Aigis's human aspect that split off from due to Aigis' wish to return to being just a machine in the good ending timeline. Labrys would survive the fall definitely. Trauma buddies? Maybe they could work together to rebuild humanity as androids like what happened in NieR Automata?

Could be wrong, but I believe Aigis actually goes to fight Nyx on her own that day, regardless. It’s pretty transparent without her friends, she would fail once again and everyone will develop apathy syndrome. So.. at least she wouldn’t have to be alone. She would be dead.

@@AkechiToo it's something I want to talk about but the information from the games and even spinoff and side content are either too little or contradictory.
The game implies the experiments happened somewhere between 06-07 cuz Chidori lost 3 years of memories but the manga says they were experimented on 10 years ago. So have fun sorting out that mess if you do it.

So IMO, i genuinely think that Ryoji was being honest when he was thinking this was a kindness, but Nyx is kind of a creepy thing. I really do think Nyx's main body was manipulating Ryoji into making him think that the gang kiling him would be merciful. Think about it from a mythological perspective. Makoto, by killing Ryoji, would be participating in Death, therefore he, as the representative of humanity in that moment, would be accepting death into the world. It genuinely feels like Ryoji was a puppet of Nyx in that moment, tempting the gang and Makoto with the promise of a sweet life with no worries (and of course, never lying abou the outcome at the end, because thats the thing about temptation, its gotta be full front).
BY rejecting Ryoji's misplaced kindness and showing him you have the spine to fight back, you get to fight Nyx, beat its avatar, and seal it away behind a door. And then Ryoji, now free from the control of this previous Nyx, is able to not only calm the party down at the end, but celebrate the fact that "The Legacy of Life will continue."
"Congratulations. You have the miracle you sought."
Ryoji, I think, was able to ascend to become the 'real Nyx' in that moment, instead of simply the harbinger

The thing that got to me about the bad ending is when the three are at the karaoke place, they are in the same room, but they aren’t really hanging out. Each of them is just doing their own thing, not really spending time with each other. After all the shit they’ve been through the whole game, that detail hurt a lot

And to make things worse if we go off how the fall happens during the good ending, humanity wouldn’t actually have a peaceful end, as right before everything is starting, they would un-transmogrify and see everything go down
Yeah that was a bold faced lie from Ryoji. The Fall is horrifying! The moon descends toward Earth as some eldritch horror as people turn into black goo all around you. There's no where to go, no way to prepare or even try to fight back. You just watch the chaos unfold and wait your turn. It's terrible.
Though I get hating Multiverse stuff, a game where Aigis somehow time travels and becomes bitter due to the MC's choice in her timeline to just let the End happen would be neat to see lol.
Bad Ending Aigis could be a party member in the Aketchi Spinoff "Persona 5M: Aketchi and the Multiverse of Madness". Alongside Dante, Bayonetta, AiAi, Silver the Hedgehog, Rika, and Alex.

Or better yet, an in-game option to sacrifice people (or animals) who wandered into the Tower of Demise for gameplay profit like additional theurgy/special persona... And that includes Maiko and Bunkichi. But I guess that would be too dark for Atlus, considering the changes they've made in Reload.

I just realized something, the canon ending / good ending, the MC spent what 2 months or whatever it was after fighting NYX not really having his friends like before before his body just started giving up with his life force.
I never thought of Aigis continuing to exist when the fall happens, i just thought its kinda like a quick snap and all existence and the earth is wiped
It specifies only humans will become The Lost. The world wouldn't actually end by that definition. If anything, unless Shadows care about harming animals and nature, it might actually be for the better regarding the overall life of the planet? Lol Humans are all Shadows, civilization crumbles, the now Shadow versions of humanity are chilling in their own bizarre way, nature is blossoming with humans being gone.
With the exception of Koromaru who is a Persona user, the Shadows have never been shown to interact with the world around them... Oh man. Now that's another inconsistency. Koromaru would survive too by that definition of The Fall. Now that's depressing... And now makes me think of a post bad ending world where a select group of animals all become Persona users and somehow deal with the Shadows.
I did both ending and this is exactly what I thought aegis is looking but cannot do anything.
She is rotting away but still she could always shut her self down and or blow her self up and never wake up just like human killed themself except she doesn't feel pain.

It's not an inherently "bad" ending. Nyx is inevitable, the "good" ending is just an indefinite delay on the apocalypse, you don't even know if you're buying any significant amount of time. It could be like feeding a psyker to the God Emperor - great, but you need 999 more for another day of power.
The "bad" is just just... prudent. You make the most of what time you have left, without a cloud of anxiety over you. You accept death, which is arguably the theme of the game.
A spinoff in a more traditional SMT post-apocalypse style following The Fall would be neat, I think. Ryuji only thinks death is instant, he doesn't know what would happen. The Fall probably brings on a permanent Dark Hour, which is what kills people. Those with the gift might just survive. They might even remember, and we get to see if they accept your intent or hate you for the betrayal.
Considering some of the lore about Nyx in supplemental stuff (mostly regarding Shadows and the human psyche and whatnot- TL;DR EVERY HUMAN ON EARTH is technically a tiny piece of Nyx, and the Fall simply lets her absorb them back into herself and come back to life)... not quite; the Fall kills EVERY HUMAN, whether they have Personas or not :S

I always knew about The Fall since I played FES and Portable. Your explanation really helped, though. Oh, and I didn't even consider what happens to Aigis in the bad ending.
I kinda wish they put in some more effort to make the bad ending seem bad instead of some reused cutscenes and some dialogue between the characters, especially since p3s bad endings outcome is worse than all the other games, but their bad endings are more fleshed out to have a few cutscenes
The bad endings sre just supposed to be a punishment, nothing too serious to put so much time into something minor. Plus bad ending or good ending, you get to make a clear file. The ending are left to interpretation, nothing bad about it. The same way Persona 3 original could have left into interpretation until the Answer happened
@@OathKeeperRiku07 A punishment? most persona games have the "good" and "bad" options be pretty apparent to the player, and after the game pretty much begs you to pick the other option if you pick the bad one anyway you get an interesting what-if scenario. royal is the best example of this with bonus scenes and new art on the credits, though I figure they wouldn't go that far with reload. p4 has some insane scenes with the accomplice ending that really show how far adachi would go if things worked out for him. if the purpose of it was just being punishment there would be no reason for bad endings to exist at all

@@Artemi22 I took "The Deal" in Royals Ending and never looked back, Royals True Ending is actually worse than the OG's, and the "Deal" is actually a really great ending.
The whole point of the bad ending is that you don't "know" its the bad ending. Your memories are erased and you die. The end. It is literally suppose to be effortless.

I never even considered that once everyone dies, aigis will be alone. No one to help or comfort her.
And since Labrys would’ve been stuck in the TV world back then (as showed in the P4A and ultimax), she wouldn’t be able to confront her shadow since yu and the investigation gang would’ve also perished. So aigis would actually be alone forever…
I haven’t played the answer so idk about Metis much but I’m assuming without makoto dying there would be no need to help aigis find the answer or something like that.
God this game is dark.
Metis likely would end up existing, due to what Aigis goes through, but she'd be just as alone as Aigis, they'd potentially never meet either

What I find really sad in this ending is wow, despite the cheerful venire, everyone is so alone. Even as our main cast is in the karaoke place they are all absorbed in their own thing.
Basically the good ending of Persona 3 is like linking the fire in Dark Souls if you think about it

It would be genuinely interesting to see a fan game with Aigis a few hundred? thousand? years after the fall after losing most memories and seeing a world overun by shadows and attempts to do something to give shadows an ego and hope they'd become something once more [think teddie for shadows with an ego]
Might be stupid but could be a fun fan game as a I guess reverse arcana version of the answer/episode aigis
By Persona 5 all shadows DO have an ego now as they take the form of SMT daemons with distinct mythologies designs and personalities.

according to the P3 club book, "The Fall" is basically a reunion of most if not all Shadows on Earth from within living things with Nyx's psyche as it rejoins with her body which became the Moon, this is why you see some people have Shadows burst out of their bodies. So in the end there wouldn't be any Shadows left besides maybe the Personas of surviving Persona-users, just The Lost.
Uh, well humanity gets wiped out and the planet is destroyed. Thats pretty explicit. And Nyx having her full power restored moves on to devour more planets/stars.
Aside from Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment’s endings in which a timeline where the planet’s surface is mostly destroyed save for a single city that’s infested with demons.
The P3 bad ending is basically the only modern Persona where the ending is complete and total annihilation. P4 the world is slowly consumed in fog and presumably Humanity is wiped out, but at least the planet remains. And P5 humanity is left living but controlled like livestock/stick in false reality like the infinite tsukuyomi. But ultimately there’s room for a comeback or at least time before a complete end state for other people to try to fix it.
I feel like the writers of persona 3 took heavy inspiration from Evangelion. Christianity imaginary, protagonist is friends with an enity that looks human that can destroy the world, said enity is in love with the protagonist, some secret organization wants bring upon the apocalypse but pretends to be the good guys while deceiving their underlings, the killing of the 12 arcane shadows are reminiscent of the angels, teenagers battling dark enities to prevent the end of the world, said teenagers have some sort of trauma.

I always pick to do all the bad endings first in persona before playing the good ending in NG+
I will say the fall likely results in a very literal mass destruction. The moon would almost surely crash into the surface of earth, on top of that it's likely all of that would happen in a dark hour that they were incapable of perceiving due to the loss of their persona. Ryuji says the dark hour would cease if he died, he also stated he wouldn't stay dead long, which leads me to believe that the dark hour would come back when the clock hit midnight on the 4th (or the 5th depending), plunge into the dark hour and the fall would happen. All that to say that Aigis likely wouldn't be alive for very long, there is a zero percent chance she would survive to see the 6th and even if she was able to exist in the dark hour (due to her being the same "person" after the Ryuji returned to life) she would be incapable of doing anything.
If things go the way I figure they would it's kind of worse. Ryuji would return to life, the dark hour and persona would return. The dark hour would happen, pulling Aigis in and she would die failing to stop the fall on her own after knowing all of their wishes were ignored, all of them betrayed and she was the only one who knew.

also it's a bit weird to assume Aigis as a machine wouldn't be affected since the entire reason the fall happens is Nyx befuckling the collective unconscious by ripping herself out of it and you would assume that either Aigis is included in that or any living creature that doesn't have enough of a sense of self would also be exempt

She did at first, but a few days before the 31st the others convinced her to fight. Thats also where her second persona awakening happens.
maybe I missed something when I was playing the game but why didn't the fall happen on January 31 in the bad ending instead of March 4? or was it always part of the deal that it would've been delayed if makoto killed ryoji?
Yep; Ryoji says killing him ASAP will delay the Fall, but not permanently stop it. If you take his offer, the Fall is delayed until the spring instead of happening right as January's about to end.
