That's an outstanding bang-for-the-buck build summary, especially considering the time frame for the modifications.
Your car is like a well tailored suit...it's built to your specifications. Well Done 👍👊
Thank you Paul, really appreciate the kind words! 👊
Appreciate the fact that you've not only added it up, but also included the revision costs. Most people gloss over the fact that they revise some of their setups once or twice.
Yeah totally, agree. It's not a definitive list, but I did my best to keep it on track. There's always things that get don't get done right the first time...
Your knowledge and wisely way to give info are exceptional. I could just sit, and watch you and Greg talk for hours with a cup of coffee in my hand, enjoying all the video. Good work man, such a rocketship you got there. Cheers.
Thank you Nicolas, so glad to hear you enjoyed!
As per usual, loving the build, the car and the enthusiasm you have for your job, loving the videos mate keep up the amazing work
Cheers Bradley. Keep in mind this isn't even my job, just a hobby! Really appreciate your kind words mate.
Other UA-camrs - "fastest XXX car in America!!!" Zero proof, literally bait.
Beavis - "Technically not the fastest mx5, but holds these lap records ... sooooo you know"
Nice, not surprised it holds a few tbh, looks pretty fast :)
Cheers MG! Given more time, I hope I can get even more stunning laps out of the car.
@@Bbeavis what gearbox are u running
@@reececannon6444 The car still has the original 6 speed.
@@Bbeavis my na has an borg warner efr setup and 6 speeds become diposables
@@reececannon6444 Gearbox longevity obviously depends on your torque delivery and use case, I've done what i can to converse the transmission as best i can but keeping torque limited in the lower area of the revs and I don't do heave driveline demanding clutch dumps.
Love your work mate! You're a true champion there is no doubting your love for these cars! You made me buy mine and I've never looked back since!
:-) Thanks
Shiny! According to Google's currency converter, 38,526.85 AUD ≈ 26,205.96 USD.
Hmm, sounds cheaper when you turn it into freedom dollars. :-P
@@Bbeavis I am probably going to bust that budget before I even think about track mods. I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my Rocketeer v6 kit. IIRC, there is a kit, maybe even a completed car in Oz.
Speaking of Oz, are ring & pinion sets taller than 3.6 easily available down there? Our ratios are not great, unless you want to pull stumps in 1st gear.
@@Genjokoan 3.6, 4.1 and sometimes 4.3 are most common. 3.9 is sometimes available. Anything else is somewhat rare.
Great post, always interesting on the costs of a sport. I feel the same, fast is not in a straight line. Accelerate, slow down, turn in, recover from bumps & jumps, steering response, chassis response - proper car performance. The car is an instrument. Luv it. (I used to rally years ago) I respect your home built and workshop skills. Thanks mate
Thank you as always Don, really kind of you. DIY race cars cost a lot... a lot of my time!
Such a badass car....everybody here in the srates is like"yeah but in the quarter mile"....
Great bud and been awesome that you documented it here.
I suppose everyone does their car in their own way. For me, I love circuit racing, and personally never had an interest in the quarter mile. That said I've been to a couple of national drag competitions and wow the cars are impressive. Anyhow, thanks for the kind words mate, really appreciate it!
Circuit racing is where its at for sure.
your a humble bloke mate and your mx5 is killer, well done sir!
Thanks mate!
Love the car and the channel. There are a couple of Turbo MX-5 ‘s here in NZ that should pop across for a time attack challenge in Oz or vice versa :)
From what I've heard, there's some awesome car culture in NZ. Would love to visit someday.
Another informative and enjoyable video.
Shows too where to spend money, keeping it sensible and grounded.
What does the car weigh Brendan?
Approx 930kg (2050lbs)
Dang man that thing is hauling! I have a 95 Miata street car, turbo, very fun. I have a log manifold and a Chinese 50trim, working on some ducting up front hopefully I’ll get out on the track soon. Hopefully my turbo/cooling set up can handle it if I take it easy
Thanks Jeffrey, good luck with your build, i hope you keep that heat under control!
I'm not into MX5s but man I'm loving your channel.
Hah, thanks Alfa! At least if you ever need a 2 door sports car, now you know where to start looking.
@@Bbeavis haha most definitely. I'm mainly into Alfa, BMW and Nissan but these little MX5s are really growing on me.
Hey I've got a question about your clutch and differential, you didn't say in the video whether you upgraded them or not.
Clutch is an Exedy HD, diff is a 3.6 factory diff with cluch pack LSD centre. So both are slightly upgraded but nothing too wild.
Great summary!
Do you use under body bracing and/or a flat floor?
😊
No bracing, other than the roll cage. I have a flat floor which I detailed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/3gYI7wyz4aA/v-deo.html
How many track days/events/hours you reckon youll get from the motor if you dont overheat it or get turbo shards through it?
Lots and lots and lots. I hope.
But seriously, it's not being too harshly worked, so hopefully a good 5-10 years.
Fantastic vid man! One suggestion, Pleeease change your ebay intercooler out for something more reputable. I bet its heavy (bad right at the front) and cooling could be futher improved. Bet it would make a massive difference.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll do some homework and consider my options. The good thing is it's not a completely crap item, so it should serve me OK at least for now.
@@Bbeavis something like a lightweight Plasmaman tube and fin would net you more power, safer, with less heat soak esp on those longer track sessions. The calibre of your car deserves it. If you ever change you should monitor intake temps before and after and do a vid on it! BTW have loved watching the development of your car.
@@bonestorm007 Thank you bonestorm, really appreciate it!
standard 6 speed and diff? do you find 1st and 2nd too short for that powerlevel? are you doing boost by gear? if not would you consider it and think it would be a benifit?
Hi Mate, yes its the factory 6 spd and diff. I don't use 1st or 2nd at most tracks. They are really just for getting up to speed out of the pits. 3-4-5 for most tracks, and 6th for some of the high speed straights. Boost map is static, for me i'm quite content with it as is, but certainly it could be a benefit to look at reducing power in maybe the first three gears to help with traction.
Watched this car for a while. Congrats! Let me know if you'd like me to send you some Extended Lower Ball Joints. ;)
Hghly recommended!!! Great product (from the fastest MX5 in New Zealand :) )
In fact I've been running a set of ELBJ's for a few years now. A very happy customer, thank you very much for a fantastic product :-)
What A/R is that GTX2860R turbo running? Those numbers don’t fall off on the dyno graph and looks impressive! Amazing build.
Thanks Mate. It's the 0.64a/r
under $50k and still a winner?? now thats an achievement
Thanks Potato!!
I am in the process of purchasing a car for track and Honda Civic Type R FK8 is on top of my list. That being said, how much quicker is this mx5 around the track compare to a standard Type R with semi slicks. I know I am not comparing apple with apple but I was thinking around the 40k mark would it be better off getting the Honda. Bear in mind that I need the track car to be road registered even though it is not going to be my daily. Your thoughts will be much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
I'm not familiar with a like for like comparison sorry, I'm only coming from the MX5 side of the fence. Certainly as far as I'm concerned it's hard to beat an MX5 dollar for laptime. A civic is certainly a very similar car though, small, cheap, light.
Imagine if you tallied the hours you spent and then counted those with a "decent" labour rate..
Never the less an amazing car! Love all your videos mate
Haha, so so many days, nights and weekends. 1000's of hours I'd say!
@@Bbeavis If we got paid a decent rate, we could be driving Porsches. :-o
@@Genjokoan I've been paid $0/hr for working on this car... so any payrise would be great! haha
Hey mate, what size are your wheels and tyres? I couldn't find a video on yours that explains this
Hey Nasr, details are below.
Wheels: Advanti Storm S1 15x9
Tyres: Yokohama A050 225/50/15
@@Bbeavis Thank you
Have you done a rewire, excluding ECU? Maybe I should not list my sensors :(
We should compare notes on costs, but mine is naturally aspirated...
I have reworked a lot of wiring, but of the wires that remain, 90% is the factory harness.
BEAVIS Motorsport, mine has zero OEM wiring left. Too many electrical gremlins as well as too many ‘hacks’ into the previous loom.
Where did you get the turbo from? $1300 for a gen 2 gtx2860 is cheap as
It was on special with a coupon code - www.sparesbox.com.au/
Is there something you would do differently if you would start all over again? Perhaps do a V8 conversion i.e.?
I'd say a V8 conversion is well out of budget. There's lots of things I've learnt that I'd not have to have re-worked. And it'd be cool to be able to start with a bare shell and build a car up cleanly with everything exactly how I want it. But for the most part Its just how I like it.... for now.
did you finish your cluster off the raspberry pi 3 with the skin
Sure did, you can see my current iteration of dashboard design in use in this incar video: ua-cam.com/video/lmWpOjBOwow/v-deo.html
Do you expect to have to upgrade your hubs sometime soon? That’s a lot of performance and hubs will likely become a consumable at some point! What are your thoughts on the topic?
Definitely interested in an answer to this one!
Hey Ashleigh, Yes hub failures are a scary. I have aftermarket front hubs made by a fellow Aussie machining shop. Rears are stock, But I'd love to grab myself a set of the MR2 units that seem to be a popular option now.... just need to find someone who can make a set.
Do the fronts use the OEM upright, but with a tapered roller bearing instead? Or is it a whole new hub/upright assembly like the kesler kit?
@@MrW8411 Option A. OEM upright, just a new Hub and roller bearing.
What clutch is on the car and how long have you had it?
Oh good question, an Exedy Sports Tuff HD button clutch. I think I forgot to include that in my expenses list... I better update it!
I installed the clutch a long time ago here: ua-cam.com/video/UlWDu9c4uRM/v-deo.html
BEAVIS Motorsport that’s the stage 1 organic clutch right? I would of thought you would run something super aggressive ahah
@@Shredzilla100 The HDCB is a level above the typical HD clutches.
If you could go back, would you do an engine swap instead?
I've only met one +300hp turbo mx5 guy here and he said in hindsight, Ls swap would've been better as a track car.
good luck fitting an ls into a miata. and good luck fixing anything on it which will inevitably break some day (cause its an ls) and its gonna be stupidly nose heavy and just want to spin out...
If this isn't sarcasm, please research. There's a world of performance out there with LS miatas and 52-48 weight dist.
I currently cannot see how an engine swap, even an LS swap, would be simpler or cheaper. I think the moment you move to something like a torquey V8, the trans is going to need changing, as is most of the rest of the driveline. Not to mention most engine swaps demand custom front subframes, and a lot of differences in wiring harness. In general, any engine swap is "more work" than just turbocharging the OEM engine, even when taking into account the time and money i invested in this engine.
Far out 40k is deep hahah. How would this thing go up against a well setup evo 5 or so which would be around similar cost.
An mx5 can knock off a similar dollar Evo. There's a few that have seen my taillights and Beavis' car is probably faster.
@@provar1 low center of gravity and lightweight are the keys
I'm totally biased, but I think these cars are hard to beat for bang for buck. There is a point where the lack of power hurts the MX-5/Miata, but once that is remedied, it's a formidable little car. There are some limitations with the chassis and driveline being able to handle all that power though too. Nonetheless, cars like an evo or skyline are usually always going to ask more money for the same laptimes, to a degree anyway. Plus, running costs are generally lower on these little mazdas thanks to the lighter weight and smaller consumable demands.
@@Bbeavis Yes you are right in some regards but it seems such a chore to turbo one here. Paying all the customs tax for the Megasquirt, Manifold and BBK etc then trying to find someone who can actually tune the thing and make decent power (Being in the eastern states might help with that). You always hear cars hitting 200kw on an unopened engine in the US but that stuff seems to be far fetched here. NitroDann reckons he can get 200rwkw on 98 for the VVTs unopened but he seems to have a bad rep within the community. Also you run into tyre issues with the MX5 here in Australia as well as there is fuck all choice for tyres (15inch) compared to the US where you can get 200TW 245s without any issue and also 295 Hoosiers if you are baller enough haha.
@@provar1 still a girls car
I am curious about the steering wheel.
What would you like to know?
@@Bbeavis I have never seen one like that. So I guess, make, model, features, etc... Thanks.

How much did it cost you?
ua-cam.com/video/ULeDlxa3gyc/v-deo.html
Wow, that video is like 6 years older than you.
This may be a random place to ask this, but since I'm here :P
Do you, or anybody else reading this, know where I can find some good information on entry level beginner (and wallet) friendly racing series here in Australia? There are an absolute ton back in England, I can't even name them all, but here I can barely find anything that isn't professional level V8s or something, which I absolutely do not want to jump into straight away, nor can I afford to. When I say cheap and beginner friendly, I'm thinking similar to the new City Car Cup which started in England this year. Really cheap, simple, basic, fun, etc. Take a look, it looks like a great laugh :P
So if anyone can point me in that direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Additionally, where and how can I find racing circuits for track days around Sydney? I've found only 2 within approx 2 hours drive, which is acceptable if I'm spending a full day there, but 2 tracks is pretty limited, I'd like to get practice around a lot more variety than that.
Thanks in advance for all info that comes my way! :D
Firstly I'd suggest you may want to start with motorsport.org.au, in particular perhaps check out the race categories list here: motorsport.org.au/regulations/manual/race
Secondly, AASA arranges events also, see here for more: amrseries.com.au/categories/
Sadly, Australia is just too small in terms of population to facilitate as varied a collection of race series as there is overseas.
There is also an event calendar here which may help you find events close to you: www.motorsport.org.au/event-calendar
Lastly, this may also be of value: ua-cam.com/video/eGB5nDrSm6A/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BEAVISMotorsport
