    I love the organza bags. I used last year and they work well. I use green cause birds cant see the figs as well. I even had a raccoon problem pulling down multiple figs and taking a bite before moving on to the next fig. Smeared some Carolina Reaper pepper juice on the bottom of bag. Found fig in bag pulled off lying on the ground next to tree SURPRISE!.

      They really do work well. Now a video of that raccoon chowing down on that reaper sauce would be fun to watch!

    THANKS for the idea of the organza bags! As for as the fig, Black Jack is a semi-dwarf so it doesn't stay real small, but you're correct, it stays small enough the control. Compared to the Kadota green fig tree it's dwarfish in that respect, we have our Black Jack in the similar type corner area you do (a great place BTW). On the other hand our other fig (Kadota) is huge and we must give it away because our yard is too small, We've had it in container for 4 years and pruned the roots once (what a pain that was) so now we just want to give it to someone who has room for it.
    But the Black Jack (age 4) is about 7 feet tall by 5 feet right now and we have never pruned it so that is pretty small in comparison. Very sweet and a little smaller blackish fig. I recommend Black Jack if you have lack of space but at least have 10 feet x 10 feet of space if you'll be keeping this til maturity and have in the ground.
    For those that hope to keep it in a container for more than 3 years, they won't produce much and you'll have to root prune which is not fun. We've had our Kadota in a 25 gal container and it doesn't produce good like our Black Jack we have planted in-ground.

      Those organza bags are life savers for the figs. A bit of a hassle, but they work like a charm. Thanks for the notes for everyone on this variety. We get questions all the time in regards to figs that do better in pots and a 25 gallon pot is no joke! That will at least give everyone some reference.

    The fig you harvest needed a couple more days to get ripe sap was coming out from the fig

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 роки тому

      Hey Manuel, that's a good catch. The challenge we have in our household is I (Duane) prefer them soft and completely ripe while Lori prefers them just under ripe! But you're absolutely right, this one was not completely ripe.

    Thank you . Is the Black Jack the same as brown Turkey like taste , colour . .does the leaf shape differ

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 місяці тому

      I would say they are nearly identical except the tree itself is more dwarfing.

    My wife and I love figs, she haden't ever tried one until we got some off of our brown turkey. The first thing she said was we need more fig trees. now we have 7 trees of 5 different types. I have read that the Violet De Bordeaux stays small enough to be a good container grown fig and is supposed to have some of the best tasting figs. keep up the great videos looking forward to the next.

      Hey David. Yeah, figs are amazing fruit no doubt. You either love them or hate them (although I can't imagine hating these things!). We considered the Violet De Bordeaux and just never pulled the trigger on it. And yes, I've heard they are smaller and a better choice for containers as well. What other varieties do you have?

    • @davidbauman7234
      @davidbauman7234 6 років тому

      Edge of Nowhere Farm we have a tiger panache, a Violet de Bordeaux, a desert king, and two mission fig trees. All of which are under a year in the ground, but we are still planning to add more.

      Nice assortment. Very interested to hear how your Violet and Desert King do. Still considering a couple more varieties to add to the collection. With that many fig trees, be ready for a MEGA harvest in the next couple of years! We already can't keep up with the 2 Brown Turkey trees this time of year!

    I have a 15 gallon black jack tree in Southern California. Got it a couple months ago. Lots of green fruit but Most of my leaves are now drooping and several turned yellow and dried up. I deep water once a week or so. Gets full sun. I even fed it last week but the leaves are all drooping. I could not find any bugs but I sprayed for them any way. Any idea why this is happening? It was doing well until a couple weeks ago.
    Thanks

      Hey Barry. Where are you in So Cal? I'm originally from Gardena and the climate there in So. Central is very different from the inland valley. For us, we start to see some leaf drop this time of year due to the hot/dry weather. The trees look pretty rough, but then come back out of it in the fall and put on new growth before winter. Water is always tough in a pot and the only way to know for sure is to use a moisture meter. Fig trees grow (and root) aggressively, so they will use a fair amount of water.

    • @jdmrider
      @jdmrider 5 років тому +2

      Sounds like you’re over watering. Are you feeling the soil for moisture? I only say that because I have black jack figs in large containers and same happened to me. I let the soil dry up completely before I started watering again and it fixed the problem.

    How is your Black Jack doing these days? Do you often get honey at the eye after 6 days of ripening? My first fruit (in-ground) had honey at the eye.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 роки тому +1

      We sold the old farm (with this tree) earlier this year and the plant on the new farm is growing like crazy, but is too young for fruit. However, I don't remember seeing honey at the eye. However, with the right conditions it would definitely be possible. That open eye is just begging to let some sugary goodness out!

      Awesome. I hope you guys like your new place even more!
      I do live in the humid heat of the East Coast though. So that may have made the difference. Also, it was a new tree that was trying to make several dozen fruit (and lost all of it's leaves due to all that fruit and not being adapted to life in the soil yet).
      So I wound up thinning all but 3 of the fruit and it had just started putting back on leaves when the fruit ripened. I let it hang on the tree for 6 or 7 days after swell... and that is when the honey showed up at the eye.
      It was so sweet I could still taste it 20 mins after eating.

      @@great0789 Ah, ok that makes sense. We rarely see honey at the eye of the figs unless we're getting a very late harvest in the fall and have rain. That's very rare for us here in AZ. I tried to open the pics in the link, but it's not letting us open them. Can you send us the pics in email? Our email is on the About tab here on UA-cam.

    How do fig trees do in ground in north central AZ zone 7b/8a?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 роки тому

      Helene, that's a great question. You may still be ok, but it's possible you'll need to cover the trees if it's too cold. Hardier varieties like the Chicago Hardy fig might be a good option to try out.

    Is this variety able to be trained in to a tree form? Thanks

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 роки тому +1

      Hey there! Yes, you can definitely train this up into more of a tree form. However, it's naturally dwarfing, so it may not get too large.

    Nice figs! I have a question...I think I remembered you saying you had Wonderful pomegranates. When are they ripe for you? I'm in San Antonio and it seems like things ripen at similar times for us (peaches, brown turkey figs). This is our first year and it's hard to tell when they're ready. Thanks!

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 років тому +1

      Hey Lucrative. Yes, we do have a Wonderful Pomegranate (have a video on it also!). They are ripe for us in basically December. You can harvest them as early as Thanksgiving, but they don't get that deep red color until December. Hope this helps!

    6 feet in 1.5 years?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  3 роки тому

      That seems to be pretty consistent with this tree. It varies a bit from year to year depending on how heavy we prune it, but somewhere in the 4-6 foot range seems to be about right for us here in AZ.
